    Hey everyone.

This talk is interesting regarding DT and jazz. The best way I can
classify DT would be as a hard rock/jazz influenced band. They
definitely show their improv. skills in their live performaces, such as
in the Images and Words video, Live at the Marquis in London, etc.
Bombay Vindaloo appears to be completely a jazz improv type rock song.
They maintain the rock edge in almost all of their songs, yet definitely
have the improvization of a jazz group.

Take for instance: Take the time (various parts witht the whole band),
Under a glass moon (keyboard and guitar solos), Learning to Live (seems
like one pre-arranged improv. instrumental section), the guitar solo in
Voices - I mean - come on folks, that's straight improv. there! Also,
referring back to the video Images and words in Tokyo, Petrucci has a
GREAT jazz flavor to part of his solo in "to live forever". Also,
Scarred has an instrumental section with pure improv. in the guitar and
keys solos. Also, Derek has himself a jazzy like solo in ACOS!

Jazz doesn't always have to be triplets and spur of the moment improvs.
They can be "prearranged improvs" as well, if that makes any sense to
anyone. Although in their video and
live CD, DT proves that they DO thoroughly enjoy the spur of the moment
    improvs as well.

It is perhaps this unexpected and non-repetitious aspect of the band
which I find most intriguing and insipiring. Not only do they compose
unique and quite often complex rhythms and melodies, with extreme
precision, but they also leave some room for experimentation and variety
in performances. DT DEFINITELY has jazz influences and improv. skills
above and beyond most ordinary rock bands of today's times. Enjoy the
variety we have on our hands!

OK - I'm done with my essay!!

I found out the *hard* way that Eve wasn't in all of the Japanese releases!

That's a pretty bold statement for someone who doesn't own any Shadow Gallery albums. This is not meant as a flame, but if you think they rip off Queensryche you really ought to give them another listen. There is definitely a Queensryche influence, but the guys in Shadow Gallery can play circles around QR. I don't remember the exact article. I was killing time in Apr. 94 waiting for The CD Store to open at Midnight so I could get a copy of The Division Bell(Boy did that album SUCK!) and I was reading a metal Edge or one of those mags (they're all the same anywya) an interview with Geddy Lee. They were asking him why they suddenly stopped with teh epic songs and went to mostly shorter ones, and that was his answer.

When my friend put this cd in for me, the first thing I thought was he put in the new QR (I haven't heard PL, so I couldn't tell you what it sounded like), amagine my surprise when I heard it was SG.

I've listened to a lot of different bands because of this list, and SG is the only one that I really didn't like all that much. If you can't handle that Pat, then I don't know what to tell you.

No, that came from a special Bruce Dickinson did for the BBC. Deep Purple's original version is on the cd of the same name. A VERY killer album too!

I find they sound a lot like Helloween, actually. The first song on Carved in Stone sounds way too much like "I'm Alive."

SG just doesn't thrill me all that much. They're a solid metal band with a generous coating of cheese, but not all they're cracked up to be. Not shitty, though.

Hey there! Syrinx gave me the idea of writing up a list of paid tickets. If you sent out a check to me and you're not on the list, let me know! IT could be either lost in the mail or it didn't get to me yet. Well, here goes:

1N - One night reserved at the Marriot (these are only the ones that were sent to me ratehr than directly to the Marriot)

2N - Two nights reserved at the MArriot

    R - Providing rides

    L - Providing a place to stay

    Paid:

001 Ryan T. Rafaloff 002 Ryan T. Okay, that's it so far. It's not looking very good so far, and I really need the money to put the deposit on the conference room, so I'd prefer if you guys sent me the money ahead of time rather than paying more at the door. That's it for now. If there are any mistakes, e-mail me! I'll talk to you soon!

DT fans are even more few and far between in Australia. I am unsure as to the number of jammers down under but I think it number about 4 or 5. Its taken me about 2 years to build up a small but loyal DT following in Canberra. I also am hanging out to meet some of the fellow jammers I have talked to and read so much about but money don't come easy and hence travellin' is hard.

    Hiya All,

I am back after about 1 months of life without jams. I have been rather preoccupied with my life, work and uni and let the jams pile up in my inbox for awhile. In brief, I have graduated from uni, after 5 years of boredom. Also, my father passed away about 2 weeks ago and I'm still recovering from the shock. Hey Mike B, I cried when reading your thoughts dude, very inspiring for a dude whose got some soul searching to do. On a brighter note, I have now increased my CD collection with some Angra, Ivanhoe, Ayreon and finally Superior ( hey it took awhile to get down under ). Many thanx to a guy called Gareth Ross for helpin me order stuff. I have spent the last couple of weeks playing Superior to everyone I damn well know and the response has been great, so keep it up guys and release Behind in Australia.

For those of you who dig rock operas, wild vocals, musical depth & diversity, and excellent muscians buy Ayreon: The Final Experiment. It kicks some serious ass, oh IMHO of course.

Congrats to Mike B and Melissa, I hope all your dreams and desires reach fullfillment thru each other.

I final note, has anyone else noticed how much the meanings of songs can change when the situations of your life change.

Brett : spread DT and prog in the land down under.

    Jammers,

This is just another shameless plug to get everyone to sign up for the tape swap that I'm conducting. It's a great way to learn about different bands and to introduce others to some of your favorite bands... radio stations don't help us out with this, so it's up to us to take matters into our own hands.

So, if you want to participate, send the following information:

Your Name E-mail Address Postal Address

    Send this info to: tapeswap@reich.uark.edu

The way it works is you compile a tape of noteworthy music that might not be well known... send a copy to three people (I give you their addresses, that's my role in this)... in return, three people send you their compilations... you listen and expand your listening perspectives.

As a result of the last tape swap I conducted, here are a few bands I have picked up albums by:

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones Shadow Gallery Echolyn Death Kansas Paradise Lost

Also, there are a few more bands I still need to check into some more, whenever the cash for CDs is available to me again.

So, sign up and let's do what we can to promote the prog community.

    DrX.
