Mozart?! Hehehe... sorry, but I have this feeling Mozart would be quite
frightened by what JP does with a guitar!!! :)

    Other random stuff:

After giving MOVING PICTURES a few good listens through... I see why there is such a crossover to Rush. They sound, to me, on that CD, a lot like what DT would have sounded like had they been aroudn then... and had the same background at that point. Quite interesting...

Also: found out my neighbor is into DT!! :) I passed him on the way to the grocery (he was on the way back) and he was wearing, you guessed it! Nothing!! er... a Dream Theater shirt!!! So then I ran into him a while later in the elevator and commented on it... came home from walking the dog to find him playing (on guitar) the song I has been blasting on my stereo before I left... hehehehehe.... so we had a DT jam fest through the walls for a while... until highlander came on. :)

    Ciao!!

Hello- just want to mention a few things...

I just picked up "Ear Candy" (Kings X) the other day. It's a pretty good CD. I also snagged a Kings X poster from my brother to hang up in my dorm room. Fortunately, my brother was cool with it.

Many have said that "time and motion" (Rush) sounds like DT. Now I didn't really notice it until people started to mention it, but it kinda reminds me of "scarred." Well, just the beginning does.

Also, ever notice how sometimes a remark on the internet about a particular song can change the way you look at that song. In my case, I never really got into "under a glass moon." Then I subscribed to the jam and heard that it was such a great song. So I listened to it again and it is now one of my favorites.

Although I still can't get into the ending of "innocence faded" despite the comments on the jam. Weird huh?

    Hi all

(gets up on soap box to speak with all the authority and dignity of age).

Lots of comments flying round at the moment about which Yes stuff to buy. Well, in the 70s I was a rabid Yes fan, had all the albums, saw them about 20 times, etc. etc. so here are my views/comments about what used to be one of the best bands in the world. (Wipes tear from eye, brushes greying hair from face).

Don't buy the first two albums unless you want to be dissapointed. The band were a long way from what I consider to be *the* classic Yes line-up, and were writing basically pretty pop songs with a psychadelic touch to them. Rating: 1/5.

The Yes album represents the start of real Yes for me (it was also the first time that I saw them). Some nice pieces on it, that then went on to become classics. Not recommended as a first buy, but worth getting once you 'get into' the band. Rating 3/5.

Fragile. Now we're talking about the sound and music that deservedly made Yes famous. Most people like Roundabout most, but I prefer South Side Of The Sky. Rick Wankman (whoops, fingers slipped) had joined the band now, and the first classic line-up was now in place (Anderson/Bruford/Howe/Squire/Wakeman). Can be bought as a first. Rating 4/5. Also first album with a Roger Dean cover.

Close To The Edge. Still one of my favourite albums, this redefined progressive music. I was at the world premiere at Crystal Palace in London, which was also the live debut for Alan White. This stuff still blows me away. Buy this first, but listen to And You And I before you attack the title track. Rating 5/5.

Yessongs. A triple live album? Commercial suicide, you might think today, but Yes had a huge following then, and they got away with it. Lots of stuff from The Yes Album, Fragile and Close To The Edge, plus bits of Wakeman showing how to play 17 keyboards all at the same time. Buy the CDs and dub the bits you like to tape. Rating 4/5.

Tales From Topograhpic Oceans. What a title, what an album. The first studio album with Alan White: gone the minimal crisp sharpness of Bill Bruford, in the more percussive approach of Alan White. Listen to this and you'll understand why Mike Portnoy lists this guy as one of his influences. Certainly the most complex album musically, the lyrics tend to go somewhat over the top. They toured England before releasing this, and played it complete without a break - brain overload. Also the end of classic Yes in my view (Wakeman left the band after this album). Rating 5/5.

Relayer. Patrick Moraz replaces Wakeman and can't quite do the job. In his previous band (Refugee - a sort of Nice remake with Moraz on keys instead of Keith Emerson), Moraz was the center of attention, both visually and musically, and, in my opinion, he had problems fitting into the band structure. Some interesting stuff on the album though, especially Gates Of Delirium, in which Steve Howe demonstrates how to play a pedal steel guitar. If you're now a real fan, buy this too. Rating 4/5.

Going For The One. Should have been called Going Downhill. Wakeman's solo career hadn't worked out, so back he comes with his tail between his legs, but for me the magic had gone. Bombastic stuff, but with no real life left in it. Only buy this if you insist on having everything that the band produced. Rating 2/5.

Tormato. Listen to this if you must. If Yes had been a dog, I would have called the vet to put it out of it's misery at this point. When this first came out, I had ordered it in advance. I listened to it in the record shop and left it there - I was that disappointed. Rating 1/5.

This was when I stopped listening (as in buying and playing) new Yes stuff. I occasionally heard stuff from friends or on the radio, but there was never anything to compare with the music that the classic line-ups produced. For me a golden age had come to an end.

Special tip - the members of the classic line-ups produced a whole load of solo albums and side projects, most of which were, in retrospect, fairly awful. Two, however, stand out from the rest, have stood the test of time and are worthy of special mention: Fish Out Of Water by Chris Squire is an album based around a bass guitar - excellent music (even though Partick Moraz plays on it). Olias Of Sunhillow by Jon Anderson is a sort of science-fantasy concept album with lots of etherial noises and some very pretty songs/vocals on it.

The grand old Yes fan descends from his soap box and spends the rest of the day dreaming of the good old days.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de)

Currently playing: Skyclad - The Silent Whales Of Lunar Sea

PS. I got a lot of flak back in the 70s too: you could either like Yes, Genesis or ELP, but not all three. Some things never change I guess.

a friend of mine told me that dream theater get soundwise a bit monotonous at one point. of course, i argued the hell outta him, but now i think the may be right to an extent. dream theater never experiments with sounds. guitar is just guitar, or sometimes wah wah guitar, drums always sound like the same drums, and so on and so forth. it's not at all annoying when you listen to one album, but if you listen to some of them in a row, or pick tracks randomly between the albums, the sound does get monotonous.

of course, i am no one to teach them, but i definitely would like to hear some experiments in the vein of... say, king crimson.

    HEY@!

You know, i'm all rootin-tootin' pissed at all of you. You all are forgetting the greatest YES album in all of history:

    DRAMA.

It's the one album that Jon Anderson isn't on. It's the one album that Rick Wakeman and Tony Kaye isn't on. IT'S ALSO THE BEST.

Lineup: Steve Howe, Alan White, Chris Squire, Geoff Downs, Trevor Horn.

Yes, i said Geoffrey Downs and Trevor Horn. Yes, they're the Buggles. The album kicks more ass than _ANYTHING_ Yes had, has, or ever will do. Just ask around to those who have been in my car as i play Drama rather loud.

_THIS_ is the one Yes album you have to pick up!

Hi, this is Marcel from Lemur Voice (guitar), at first it isn't exactly a sixteen string Bass, but a twelve string "Stick", cynic's Sean Malone also plays one, it really sounds great, you have 5 bassstrings and 7 guitarstrings, the way to play the thing is just with two hand tapping structures, really difficult because the tuning is reversed. Our new material will be a lot more experimental and heavier than the old material and the Stick just adds another dimension in the newer songs. It also looks great on stage, hahaha. Just buy our album you jammers, I think you will like it,

Well at 12:06am this morning "There's a Fire in the House" began blasting through my car CD player. After hearing only the first five songs I have come to the conclusion that "Fire Garden" by Steve Vai rocks!!!!!!!! Cool songs, cool guitar tones, cool textures and awesome production. There hasn't been any real over-the-top guitar playing but I have confidence that will change. Do not hesitate to pick this one up. Three years is too long.

Also picked up Altura "Mercy". Haven't had a chance to listen to it yet.

I think I saw Chevy Chase on Conan O'Brien last night (though I may be hallucinating from lack of sleep), so unless he died after they taped it (provided it wasn't a re-run), then he is alive as far as I know. Also, the Maiden re-releases include the B-sides form the singles that were released for the corresponding albums, I believe.

IIRC the re-releases include a second CD which contains the B-sides from the singles of that album. I can't make any further comment because I have neither seen nor heard the re-released albums. I used to be really into Maiden a few years ago, but I find I've slowly stopped listening to them. Maybe time to dig those old albums out...
