It's a really cool party-type atmosphere where we all get together and
make fun of people that aren't in attendance and listen to cool music
and piss off entire restaurants full of people with talk of testicular
cancer and trade war stories of the grueling trip to NY and shave the
band members' heads and tell sick jokes.

Oh, yeah, and Dream Theater might be there, too.

I second this. I just got LitS last week, and it's been the only discs capable of keeping TFE out of the player. And the packaging is just incredible.

Just heard a commercial on the radio today for the Rush tour that said that it's evidently supposed to be the most elaborate production for a Rush show in history ("and that's quite a history," according to the commercial). No opening act (as has been stated here on the jam, I believe). Over two hours of Rush. Man, that's going to rule. Hmm, Eruption/You Really Got Me is playing right now. That's the VH I like. The band sounded raw, and Roth didn't SEEM to have quite the showy attitude that he got later. AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! COOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! They're playing Dokken on the radio. Man, K-SHE has been uncommonly cool lately. I'm not really even that heavily into Dokken (they're not bad), but hearing any sort of metal on the radio is way cool. Which reminds me. If any of you can pick up the Steve & DC morning show (it's carried in St. Louis, Columbia (MO), Mississippi, Alabama, and somewhere else - easily the best morning show I've ever heard), listen tomorrow (well, today - Thurs.). They're supposed to be using a different style of music for their bumper music each day this week. Today, they used dance music (at least they declared no Macarena). Tomorrow, yep, y'all guessed it, they're supposed to use metal. I've heard them use DT before, so this should be an interesting thing. Cheers.

This was the first I heard about steve owning the logo. But I read that the reason why Chris Squire owns the Yes name is that the other members quit and left the band at one time or another. He owns the name because he never left. That's why ABWH couldn't use the Yes name but they could call their live album "An evening with Yes". -Anthony Sciamanna CLOCKWORK

    >hmm. could this by any chance have any relation to lie at all?...

Nah, it's got to be about Mike's smoking-related lung problems :). How could that idiot of a writer lump James in with a guy like Axl? I mean, I can't think of ANY way they resemble each other. I'm not even criticizing Axl here, either (I could, if you want). Their stage presences are VERY different (from what I've seen on video), their voices are VERY different, and they have different attitudes (just ask anybody in St. Louis about Axl and you're unlikely to get a positive response - remember the riot at Riverport a few years ago?). Oh well, I read bad (poorly written, that is, not necessarily negative - I mean, this one was a positive review, after all) album reviews all the time, so in a way, this shouldn't be a surprise, but Axl?

Are there any other Jammers arriving from out-of-town well before the Con and leaving well after? I'm arriving on Thursday and leaving Monday and I'm hoping there might be others to kinda hang with, at least on Sunday and maybe Friday. I'm staying at the hotel and sharing room-costs with Jammer Chris Oates on con-night, and staying at Heath "Augie" Augustover's the other nights (I hope!) I won't have a car, but with luck, others will. :)

Just send me email. A veteran of one previous Ytsecon, I know how much fun it can be to hang with fellow Jammers. We really ARE some of the coolest folks around. :)

To any Atlanta-area jammerz, first I'd like to invite you to two shows featuring my friends' band Bonedance [cue Skadz for a "raaahhh!"].

The first is this Friday (i.e., about a day or so away) the 20th at Club Kaos, the old Strand Theater on Marietta Square in Marietta. They are headlining this show (which BETTER mean they get to wrap up with their cover of "Killing in the Name"), and it's being advertised by the club on 96rock (!). Very little warning on it, but hey.... The club itself is (AFAIK) all-ages and does not serve alcohol, but there are pubs right down the sidewalk that seem to take a Sithi view of people's ages ("Years mean little to us, Simon Snowlock" :)).

The second show is at the infamous Masquerade the following Friday, Sept. 27th, and includes Bonedance, Urban Grind, Bullhead Clap and Crawlspace. Crawlspace, who I know slightly, were recently signed to a record deal with TVT Records and this will probably be their last "local-feel" show here -- they are splendid live, beyond question one of the two best hard-rock/metal acts in the city. (The other is Stuck Mojo, and they also have been signed. :)) Both shows should be $5.

Additional details are at my mini-page for Bonedance, at www.crl.com/~vanyel/bonedance.html. If I can get the hang of my sound card, I'll try to load up some audio .WAVs.

I spoke with a Brazilian progressive/DT fan at the King's X show here last month, and gave him the address to subscribe, etc. If you've become one of us, let me know, dude! :)

I'd post a review of T4E here, now that I can buy it, but I can't really afford to until next week. :) I -did- look for Lemur Voice during the "Rush protest" week, but did not find it (kinda my way of supporting Magna Carta instead).

I tried emailing noisela@noiserecords.com regarding Superior, and my mail was returned "mailbox full." Uh-oh, I think we might be getting too much of their attention. :) :)

5 CDs recently purchased and not yet listened to 'cause my receiver has a blown channel:

Altura, Mercy King's X, Ear Candy King's X, Out of the Silent Planet Savatage, Handful of Rain Savatage, Edge of Thorns Type O Negative, October Rust (wow, we all got this a month early :)) (oops, 6, I lied)

Okay. Did he die, or is he alive? Chase's career bit the dust years back, but that much we all know. And this van halen thing: people on the radio round here say that david lee roth is still in the band. SO WHICH IS IT?

    >>"elements of progressive rock Yes combined with modern Guns N' Roses." I >>swear!! Then he said they have a fantastic lead singer in vein of Geddy >>lee and Axl Rose! i couln't belive it. > Is that guy still alive? I swear he wouldn't be if he met a real >DT fan after saying that shit. Yes ok, even the DT guys say so, but >GUNS'N ROSES? Where was that guys head when he wrote that?

    --------- AND -----------

    >>swear!! Then he said they have a fantastic lead singer in vein of Geddy >>lee and Axl Rose! > > Axl Rod!!!!!! > > Blessed Busty Mother Of Our Lord James LaBrie!! (I don't know >if she was a virgin ;) Is this guy deaf??????? > I agree that he's an excellent frontman, but what a horrifying >singer to lump him in with! > I prefer to think of James as Placido Domingo with ATTITUDE!

    (snicker, that's funny.)

Actually, as a vocalist I can see what the reviewer means. I'm thinking in particular of "sweet child o' mine" and "knockin' on heaven's door". Axl has a distinctly irritating grind to his voice which I do NOT reproduce (being female, it's too rough on me, and besides that I don't smoke, which has a distinct effect). Axl is also really nasal (sniff much coke???), even live he is raspy and sounds like he has a snotty nose.

Back to Axl in a mo. Geddy Lee has improved (imho) his style over the years, although at first I couldn't stand the way he sounded like he was trying to reach the notes (if you're going to write your own music, like, do it in yr own range) but realized that wasn't the case. "Time stand still" is beautifully sung. There's one on _Moving Pictures_, near the end, where he IS reaching and it shows, can't think of the name of it.

KJLB, now, has a good technique in addition to his open-throated singing. Of course, years spent studying with (hearsay follows) the best teacher in Canada/North America most likely has something to do with it. James allows/forces the music to resonate in different parts of his body, such as sinuses, chest, throat, sometimes temples... Axl doesn't open himself up that much (hence the nasal undertones) and Geddy's throat is still too tight, though he has learned more about resonance. Or, when I sing along 'n' try to reproduce their sound that's what it seems like to me. Flipping around the palate and whatever else one does to mimic another singer is an excellent way of learning new techniques, for those of us on a budget. (I must say though when I cover "sweet child o' mine" it sounds much different, coz Axl is the nose-face and I'm not going to "try to sound like axl rose" singing it. Also, being a femme, it's a little different meaning: my infant daughter does have those blue eyes, even before I had kids I thought that was a sweet song.)

SO, my point being, (uh, what was it?) that James has the training, Geddy has the wisdom, Axl has the raw potential but (seemingly) no clue -- who knows, maybe he WANTS to sing like that. They DO sound quite similar in theory though not in practise.

I think another to lump in there to round it out is Lars Ulrich of Metallica, maybe the dude from Depeche Mode (lame music, GREAT voice).

Somewhere inside me tells me to not try to be technical at 1:45am.

Dear Ytsejammers: I am just sitting here, after doing lots of homework and attending to a few bowls; I have found myself listening to a local metal program. I am pretty psyched about it, actually. This means that metal ISN'T totally dead. I'm glad to be honest with you. I'm hoping they'll play something really cool. (WORT is the station). Now they're playing Mercyful Fate. I don't know if I agree with the selections so far (well, the first song was a band called Overdose, and it kind of sucked....then it was Iced Earth from their new CD which was pretty kick ass, and now MF is kind of, well, REALLY metal. ".....The Uninvited GUEEEEEEEEEEESSTTTTTT!" Anyway, I just thought I'd share with you the stats here in Madison. In less than a year Madison Student Radio will be up and running and hopefully I'll be the one with a 2 hour slot with Progressive Rock/Metal. Keep your fingers crossed!

    Later.

By the way (dtc), I'm also psyched to hear new Dream Theater.

btw2, is anyone in the Official Dream Theater Fan Club? If anyone has official info, could you e-mail me with it? I'm interested in getting into it. Alright.....thanks. __________________________________________________ "A real work of art destroys, in the consciousness of the receiver, the separation between himself and the artist." -Leo Tolstoy __________________________________________________

Hey, I got some interesting concert info today. November 23, at Wonderland Ballroom (310 E. Chicago Ave., Elgin IL - Chicago area for those who don't know - (1-800-521-0290), Galactic Cowboys, Fourth Estate, Bride, and D'Gruve are playing. GC and 4th Estate are more than worth it. Bride is killer live, too (though can get a bit preachy. They're more straight ahead hard rock/metal, but they put on a good show). D'Gruve I don't really know about. Show starts @ 6pm and tix are $12 adv., $14 at the door, and $10 for groups of ten or more (hmm, that sort of rhymed). Also, the night before that, GC is playing alone at The Light Club (6410 S. 108 St. in Milwaukee - (414) 427-1355). That show starts @ 8pm and I don't know prices for it. I might try and make at least one of the shows if I can afford the road trip at that time. I'm getting Rush tickets Saturday. Woo hoo!!!!!!!! The DJ on the radio the other day said something about Geddy wearing a maks since it's on Halloween. Yeah, that'd be a hoot. I could see it now. Geddy coming out as The Cryptkeeper or something. Man, I need some rest.

    Hello 'jamanoids!

Has anyone of you ever heard of a band called MAD SWORD? They have a new CD out and it has been reviewed in a fanzine called "Scream". The URL to the review page is:

    http://www.gi.no/scream/cdrviews/rev31.html

The reviewer reportedly said that the disc should be something of a milestone in recent prog metal...the CD is entitled "EVOLUTION" and there is an epic song on it and...lo and behold...(holding breath)..THERE IS A COVER OF THE YTSE JAM on it!!!

All I've said is just hearsay. I still am the wretch without a www access.

Now, imagine >dividing by an infinately small number (zero). The result *will* be >infinity !!! Ok, I also think 0/0 should be *one*... A/A = 1/1 <-- A=0 >Nevermind...

That depends on how you arrive at the answer. Say, for example, 1/0. First re-write it as 1/x and take the limit as x approaches 0. If x->0 from the right (positive), this limit approaches infinity; however, if x->0 from the left (negative), it approaches negative infinity. Since lim(x->0) 1/x approaches different values from different directions, the limit does not exist and is therefore undefined.

You can do similar things for 0/0, but suffice it to say that since x*0=0 for all x, then 0/0 can be anything. If you're determining a limit and you come up against a 0/0, you have to use l'Hopital's Rule to simplify it before you can find the limit.

Okay, that's enough for now, John

I thought this thread was interesting on the Vocalist digest. They started talking about when piece you would like sung at your funeral. Yeah, it's a bit macabre, but what the hell? What DT song would you have played at your funeral and why? I think some obvious choices would be PMU and 6:00. I would want them to play TLF, extended acoustic version including the whole "This just in from Bahgdad" that James throws in on the Subcon. (?) version. And thanks to whomever posted the G3 dates! I am going to the Chicago show at the Aragon on All Saints' Day (Nov. 1). Any Chicago jammers' interested in a pre or post party? I love that hall though the acoustics aren't the best. LATER- Steve
