Sorry to rehash, I just feel that I have to comment on this...

I'm all for good, intelligent discussions about music (i.e. the can of
worms that I suppose I opened up between Clark Abel and Chris Ptacek
with my original post), be the comments about OFB either positive or
negative - SO LONG as they aren't like, "DT's new album sucks." (end of
post). If you're gonna slam, at least have the decency to back up the
slamming; don't appear ignorant in front of 1200 people. :)

And I still think FII kicks ass.

So, in Burning My Soul, that last verse there (especially lines like "just to
stay on my good side"), does anyone else think that James sounds an awful lot
    like Dave Mustaine?

Yeah! Cool! Flame wars!!!! (Read with a Beavis voice....)

Just wanted to say: You can't argue about music. Everyone has his own
    taste.

    For example:

This list consists of metal freaks who listen to Sepultura and Pantera.
I can't stand those bands. But I don't go and shout to thw whole jam: "I
hate Pantera!!!" (Mainly 'cos i'll get eaten alive if i'll say something
    like that...._)

You want another example? hear you go:

Another genre mainly discussed here is 70s prog rock, like Yes and King
Crimson. Don't like 'em. So what?!? Do I fill the jam with posts like:
"Yes SUX!!!!"? No I don't (Again, i'll get linched if i will...).

    But seriously,

Someone already said that, but I think it's true so i'll repeat it:
DT's music talks to many ppl because it consists of many types of music.
There's enough music for the average headbanger, enough for the
prog-head, and with this album, enough for the common person. So, while
Mr. X thinks the album rocks, Mr. Q thinks it sux. It's as simpe as
that. No need for flame wars.

Whoa. got kinda long.... Probably my longest post so far....

cdconnection.com has the winter rose cd at a whopping $33...

Comparing my inital thoughts on Awake with my initial thoughts on FII and I like FII better. Maybe it has been too long without new DT but only time will tell how everyone feels about FII. Surely some people had initial reactions about FII as being lousy but haven't you ever bought a cd and disliked it at first but after more listens the cd grows on you to a point where you really love the cd?

I can't really pick a song off FII that I like the best. After every listen to the cd I have a new favorite FII song...

Current FII favorite:Hollow Years (something about those vocals...)

Anywa, FII is growing on me faster than Awake did....well except for SpaceDyeVest, which immediately kicked my ass. I knew I shouldn't have posted that review a while back....and I'm sure that everyone else who has posted bad thing will do the same in a few months....

that's the beauty of Dream Theater - only their music has so many little intricacies, that when you listen to it the 100th time, you STILL find something new,..... damn I love this fuckin' band......

by the way, Mads, I sweat you hard......"you can have your nipples and tweak them too"??? You, Eckie, and Bafu in a room would probably kill anyone in the same room as you guys...

I have to come to some defense here....Korn is a talented band... The drummer has got some great chops (even though he's not school-taught), and the guitarists have a unique style (not unlike Tom Morello of Rage) and come up with very interesting and intense licks.....obviously the musical caliber is different but their intensity in there and the groove factor is definitely there as well......true some of the songs may be on the low end, but this is only their second album, and a majority of their material is really good.

Now, you just have to get used to the singer........ :)

Well, I don't care if someone says that DT isn't prog. What I'm questioning is when someone says right out that they're grunge or alternative or sell-outs. Well, I'm up to jam 3011, right now and no one's been able to point out one *fact*. Hmm, interesting...

    Jason,

    >It seems to me that DT is getting more cryptic... their lyrics have just as >much meaning, but it's more sheltered. At first glance, some may say, >These lyrics suck... but with more observation/study, the same amount of >meaning can be derived from many of these songs. (of course there are the >straightforward ones, that seems more for the public who has no idea what the nice thing is that although the lyrics may have become more vague, but they are still very poignant, they still have quite alot to offer a listener who wants to take some time and read them. They still are very "internally" driven- they discuss a range of situations and complications that the other albums try and touch- the idea of seeing with "eyes closed" and such. So now it's just a little more work to get to the meaning, that's all...It's good practice for the English majors (like me!)

    >After some searching and after getting out my magnifying glass, the extras >are "Take away my pain" (some other version, too small on the picture to >see), and "Speak to Me". Just curious to ask if these will be realeased on any sort of single? I don't know if Dream Theater will be releasing many singles, but Queensryche released "chasing blue sky" on their single, so it wasn't necessary to hunt down the Japanese version...and if you doubt that this will be on a single, does anyone know where can I order the Japanese Album?

over and over again (i.e. they're not writing songs that aim to sound like

Pull Me Under, or Lie). This is the problem that bands like Yngwie's suffer

from... they keep pumping out the same album, over and over and over...

That shows no (Dare I say it?) progress... not even regression, which would

be cool for a band like theirs. But I seriously doubt that a person with a

"mind" like yours could comprehend or accept what I have to say about this

matter, because you're so belligerent and intent on letting us know=20 that

    we're all inferior.

This wasn't addressed to me, but it seemed such a complete contradiction to my own perception of the album that I had to respond.=20 When I say complete contradiction, I mean that I feel the EXACT opposite of everything stated in the above paragraph. Funny coincidence, but I was discussing FII by private email with a friend of mine, and I mentioned that DT were starting to remind me of Yngwie- a lot of talent going to waste writing songs which were only worth hearing for the solos. That same friend and I were listening to RealAudio clips about a week ago, and I mentioned how same old/same old one song sounded, but on a positive note mentioned that at least there wasn't any wah-wah soloing.=20 Next thing you know, Bingo!, wah-wah solo. Also, I DO feel that they're dragging out the same music/style over and over again, I hardly think the moods are more dramatic on the new album, and your first two comments on tighter musicianship and more focused songs don't mean jack shit if the songs aren't well written in the first place. Night Ranger play pretty tight too, that doesn't make them progressive. Nearly every riff on the new album reminded me of something I've heard before, and whether or not I heard it on an album from Dream Theater or someone else hardly makes a difference. What's more, I think Burning My Soul is highly reminiscent of Pull Me Under! Also, the bridge in You Not Me (That's alright/I'm Okay...) is absolutely pathetic in terms of both it's lyrics and simplistic nursery rhyme cadence. I was, however, surprised to go to work today (Hasting's) and find FII in the playbin, as it's usually company policy not to play metal. I don't suppose we broke too many rules though- many of FII's tracks aren't any heavier than the new Genesis album. =20

I think a lot of people still kinda miss the point, when it comes to "You Not Me". It's there for one simple reason: To attract new fans. If you blame Dream Theater from actually trying to make some money & expand their fanbase at the same time, fuck you ! :-) Like someone already mentioned, you don't bring in someone like Desmond Child for fun... Also, there's no reason to bitch about Desmond's work on "You Not Me". If his biggest priority is writing hit singles, then he has certainly succeeded quite a few times... He is just as brilliant for accomplishing that goal as Dream Theater is for writing all of their songs. And using him for one song does not mean they're selling out. It simply means they might start selling. nothing more nothing less. Also, the songs people are complaining about the *most*, are usually amongst the songs that get the most response at concerts. That's how things often go with Fish and Marillion for me. I can't wait to hear "You Not Me" live. :-)

Oh yeah, to those who keep bitching about "Falling Into Infinity"...

    " J u s t c l o s e y o u r m o u t h , y o u c a n f i n d

    a l l y o u n e e d w i t h y o u r e a r s "

Guess I'm just one of those lucky Ytsejammers, who fell in love with Dream theater's music in '89 and has loved everything they did, ever since. :-) (No, not simply because it's Dream Theater)
