Strat, Virginia, I don't know the price yet, but I'm sure it won't be cheap.

Wait. I actually played on two stages that DT played on. I played at the
Birch Hill in 1996, between the home for the holidays and fix for 96
shows. And I played at the Trade Winds last summer, just about four months
before the FII tour. Ha.

Does Derek own one of the others then? According to the DTIFC CD he uses one on Peruvian Skies and Anna Lee.

I absolutely agree 100%. At the Detroit show earlier this month James was completely awesome. He was very cool about chatting with myself and the other fans. We even kidded around about the previous (kinda lousy - RELATIVELY speaking) DT show back in October, and his being sick (for that show).
note: Derek (the other one often maligned for his "niceness") was also extremely cool.

I received my copy of DT's "Mind Control" today from KTS! This is my very first bootleg. I guess I'm not a "boot-virgin" anymore! ;-D I must say that this is just fucking amazing! (I've listened to MOST of it so far). Since I've never heard a boot before, I didn't know what to expect...... but I'm VERY pleasantly surprised. I do wish the keys on CiaW were louder (especially the beginning part).
I do have a few Q's for anybody who has this bootleg.
1. If this is a complete show..... isn't it on the short side? The two discs combined are about 110 minutes. Subtract the two bonus tracks and it's in the neighborhood of 103 minutes. Isn't the typical DT show a good solid two hours? My two experiences were about 2 hours, then somewhere close to 2 1/2 (I think) the second time.
2. Is this from an audience DAT recording, or from a soundboard?
3. Isn't it kind of odd that one of the bonus tracks is TSM, when the same song is on that very disc?
About jewel cases...... I'm wondering where I'd be able to pick up double jewel cases? I need one to put Mind Control in..... and Lords of Sound, whenever I get that one. I obviously don't want to buy a large quantity though.

<<When I saw [Rush] on the Test for Echo tour, <<it was a tiny little keyboard that Geddy had on <<the top of all his other keyboards and it was <<only used on [Subdivisions]. I absolutely love <<that sound and I'd like to know what it is...
Geddy Lee used the Mini-Moog as his primary "lead" synth sound from the time he started using keyboards (on the song Xanadu in 1977 to be precise). It was also featured on such classics as The Trees, Tom Sawyer and Subdivisions. By the late eighties Geddy's keyboard rig had gotten huge so he traded in the Taurus Pedals, Rolands and Oberheims for midi-controllers and digital rack equipment. This gave him a much more streamlined stage set-up and more sound options (samples, layering, sequence triggers, etc.). But apparently he still uses a small analog synth (either the Mini-Moog or something similar) for those lead parts where the digital stuff just doesn't cut it.
By the way, I think that the live version of Subdivisions on the Show of Hands CD (1989) sounds awesome, better than the original. This is largely because of the layered, plush digital keyboard sounds that Geddy used for the rhythm parts which he did not have access to when Signals was recorded (1982).
Derek Sherinian is one of many younger players who are now making use of the analog type lead sounds that Moog had pioneered in the 60s and 70s. They have a fat sound that the digital keyboards of the 80s couldn't compete with. The riff in Lines in the Sand is an excellent example.

Hi all!
I need to have a rumor either confirmed or denied. As is the case for all rumors, I really want to apologize in advance for the mayhem it might cause but if it were to be true, it would be oh so sweet for all of us... I guess I can count on the man himself, Mike Portnoy, to set the clocks straight on this...
Two days ago, I was in a local record store and talking prog with the resident proghead salesman. He told me that within a month, he would have in store some kind of "LTE part 2". A totally new album with the four original members of LTE plus one new, unknown to me, member. Now, I admit that I am about 10 days late on my jam reading but I am almost certain I would have read about it either here on UACM so I guess this might almost certainly untrue. But, the guy has been a VERY reliable source of musical info and scoop in the past and this is too much a big deal to me to let it rest. Anybody ever heard of such a thing in here?
Take care, Steve Godbout

Hey.. You know, it's amazing what the new car stereos play these days. ;) I have a new "misheard lyric" that I *SWEAR* I heard while listening to the chorus of JLMB.
"Big sheep and caribou tell you 'Kill yourself!' And then their tails go through the roof." I tell you, I heard it! Really!
Now, the possible convert is my best friend. (Yes, another chick.) It all started when I listened to LTE for the first time on my way home from the SA show. I know, shame on me, but I absolutely HATED the clips that were on the Internet, so I didn't even bother trying it. Well, the problem with the clips was that the songs were meant to be heard as whole entities. Anyway...
So LTE had never left my CD player, and I'm listening to it this morning on the way to pick up my best friend to go shopping across town. It was in the middle of 3 minute warning when she got into the car, so I explained who was playing and the general concept of the song. She listened really closely, and finally said, "You mean they didn't rehearse this?" "Nope." Then it got to the part where Mike's DAT shut off, and I explained that as well. So then I decided that instead of playing LTE again, I'd switch to FII and give her a taste of what the band MP and JP came from is like. She loved it!!! She wants me to make her a sample DT tape! Let's hold our collective breath and see what happens. :)
/me gets her next Ytsejam before this one is sent out. OH MY FREAKIN' GOSH!!! Mike posted **twice** in one digest!!! And he knows HTML!!! /me runs to prepare for the end of the world. ;)
Oh, and another sign the world is about to end, Damon figured out how to get on i-party. <smile>

Whenever I hear an American say "I shit myself", my instinctive > response is "Quick, turn round and let me watch!" Nope, not just British people. Stephen King seems to think so, too. In his book "Cujo", there's a part where Cujo's drunk owner walks into his barn (this is right before Cujo goes on his killing spree), and sees that Cujo has taken a dump on the floor of the barn. The line goes something like "The dog had shat on the floor again." I'll never forget that. It was the first time I'd ever seen the word "shat" in print, though I'd heard it before, and it caused me a great deal of confusion in grade school, like when I was wondering if I was spelling "realize" correctly, or if I should spell it "realise."
Vocalist stuff: If James LaBrie gets killed while trying to imitate Tarzan on an electric utility pole, DT should replace him with nobody. I remember finding out, after DT was trying to replace Dominici, that they'd seriously considered going all-instrumental. Shame that they didn't. I think their instrumental stuff kicks ass, and is the main reason I got hooked on 'em in the first place. They could at least try it for one CD and see how it goes.

It's definately 'shat', as immortalised by Bad News - "See the cat, on the mat, see the cat, he just shat". I don't have the album with me, so I can't remember for sure what the song was - Masterbike? Dunno...
Brilliant album, btw. Worth it for 'Warriors of Genghis Khan' and their perfect cover of 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.

Hang on a second! What's with everyone getting shitty about the 'replacement for LaBrie' thread? I was under the impression that it was completely *hypothetical* and nothing else. My comment about Russel Allen was nothing more than just a hypothetical suggestion about who, IMHO, could cover for LaBrie if, for whatever reason, need be.
I *know* he's not leaving the band, that wasn't what I thought, nor was insinuating. I think the same goes for anyone else who posted in with a suggestion for a LaBrie replacement.

I know that at least the Swedish band Anekdoten uses one all the time, and it's hard for me to imagine that they of all people would own one of the two that Fripp doesn't have. Don't get me wrong, Anekdoten is a brilliant band and I love them, but they're definitely not in the big-budget league that could afford to buy such a rare instrument. Maybe they have rented it from Fripp. Hmm.
Justin James wanted Crimson recommendations. Here are mine: In the Court of the Crimson King, Red, Discipline. That gives you a good coverage of the band's career, since you already have THRAK. I think these three albums are also generally considered to be the highlights of their career. In fact, now when I think of it, it's SHOCKING that you've been able to live your life this far without Red! :)

Has anybody out there heard of the band Trillian Green? I guess it's a bit of a rhetorical question -- I got the album "Metamorphoses" today, and I tell you, they rock nadz! More than a couple of songs have riffs worthy of Megadeth or even Symphony X. The catch? Their instrumentation -- a cello, a flute, and various percussion. The cello sounds like Tony Levin or Les Claypool on bowed bass. In otherwords, meaty (grin). The flautist must be a fan of Ian Anderson -- he does the whole "grumble-flute" thing wonderfully, and really has some impressive chops. The percussionist uses some good varied sounds with his bongos and congos and etc. A lotso the stuff rocks heavily.
Anyways... I'll stick some .mp3 samples on my webpage if anybody wants to hear them. Gimmie a private e-mail if you do.

I'm after the second listen and it seems to be a disappointment. Maybe I'll change my mind, I wish I could, but this is 11 aimless song plus Bloodsucker (written Bludsucker on the cover,uuuuuuhhhhhhhh.....). Maybe I listened to too much Tori Amos these days, but I can't find find any interesting in the songs, it feels like noise and not music. Stop it, maybe I'm not in the mood.

Yep, it's the second verse of "Masturbike" (I've got all the songs digitized on my PC here at work).

"Perfect" cover?! Perfectly hilarious! I'm surprised to hear Bad News mentioned anywhere, much less on the 'Jam! Of course, it would come from somebody outside of the US - since we here in the States generally don't have the highly developed sense of humor to appreciate these things.
BTW Nigel, do you have this on CD? Could you get a copy on CD if you were compensated? I've got it on audio tape, and copied all of the songs to my HD for burning a CD of it for posterity. I had a chance to buy the CD about 6 years ago, but was short on cash, and have never seen it since - I kick myself every time I listen to it!
