<Steve Vai's new solo album "Fire Garden", which consists of 18 new tracks
(15 full songs and three "Vai-isms") will be released Tuesday, September
17th. That morning, Steve will appear on the Mark & Brian radio program from
KLOS 95.5 FM in Los Angeles (and will probably perform live on the air!), and
he'll be giving away VIP passes to a very special evening at the Hard Rock
Cafe in Universal City (near LA) that same night. That evening, Steve will
be dedicating his infamous red heart guitar to the Hard Rock, as well as the
outfit he wore at the Guitar Legends Festival in Spain. The dedication will
take place around 8:30 pm on Sept 17, and at about 9:00 he'll perform there
(I've heard inside talk of some very special guests that might just drop by,
we'll keep ya posted). Steve will finish the evening by heading over to the
Sam Goody music store on the Universal Citywalk (only about 150 feet from the
Hard Rock Cafe) to meet fans at an after-hours autograph signing.

Let's get more instrumental rock music on the radio! Call and/or fax your
local rock radio stations and request it!

Steve Vai's orchestral performance in Rochester, New York is scheduled for
September 28th. Tickets are now available from Ticket Express, at
716-222-5000. This show will be cybercast live over the internet and Vai
fans everywhere can tune in regardless of your modem type or connection
speed! For details, jump on Vai's official website at http://www.vai.com.
The site is undergoing some major changes in the months ahead too, so keep
hitting it often! (If you're using Netscape you can even make Vai's site
your home page so whenever you sign on to Netscape, you'll immediately enter
the site and find out all the latest dirt)

Steve Vai will be performing at Hollywood's Musicians Institute (GIT) on
October 6. This will be an intimate performance for students of the school.
For more information about MI you can call 800-255-PLAY.

Tour dates have finally been announced for the upcoming "G3" tour featuring
Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani. (Special guests at varying cities
will include Adrian Legg, Chris Duarte and Kenny Wayne Shepherd). We have
the first 5 dates for you now, we'll be sending you the rest as soon as we
get them (which should be very soon!)

    G3 tour dates...
Oct. 11 SAN FRANCISCO, CA (Concord Pavilion)
Oct. 12 LOS ANGELES, CA (Hollywood Bowl)
Oct. 13 SAN DIEGO, CA (Hospitality Point)
Oct. 14 LAS VEGAS, NV (The Joint)
Oct. 15 PHOENIX, AZ (Mesa Amphitheatre)

Tickets will be available from the usual outlets (Ticketmaster, etc). I
don't have any information yet about when they go on sale, but you can of
course call Ticketmaster or your ticket broker to see if they have any
information about shows in your area. (If you are a GKS member who lives
outside North America and plans to visit the US for the shows - and I know of
several of you that do - e-mail us here and we'll try to get you the info
you'll need to order concert tickets from your area).>

A while back I was whining on the 'jam because I was looking for info on
this particular disk and nobody seemed to have any definite info on how
to find it. Nobody has it I guess. Finally, after a shot in a dark
e-mailing someone off the web, I got the number of Dream Disc and I
ordered it on a Monday, and got it THAT SAME THURSDAY!!! This in itself
is enough for me to rave about this particular disc service. Not to
mention they are the ONLY place that I know of in the U.S. to stock this
disc. (Including the biggies: CD NOW, cdconnection.com, cdeurope.com, etc.)

    Anyway, here's there number: 219-347-8080

If you're in search of a hard to find prog disc, give 'em a try. The
cost of one phone call isn't all THAT bad. By the way, the disc was $25
plus shipping. Not bad considering what's ON the disc, but that comes later.

Now a while back, I had heard that Sieges Even was this incredibly wicked
band in the same vein of Watchtower. This means that ALL of their music
is VERY technical, much like the middle of Metropolis. Anyway, they're a
German band and they had put out 3 previous albums. Reading reviews of
them, they sounded like they were very good. One problem - their singer
was TERRIBLE! Supposedly he's one of the worst singers out there. Well,
on their newest creation, "Sophisticated", they sport a new singer and he
is MUCH IMPROVED from their last one (though supposedly it doesn't take
much to improve off of him...)

    So here's my review:

This album SMOKES!!! GET THIS, GET THIS, GET THIS!!!!! First, the songs
are very polished in their intensity. I can tell these guys probably in
their earlier albums were really chaotic and focused on shredding rather
than melody, but in this one, they masterfully combine melody with chops.
Now I wouldn't say that all of their songs are as bizarre as the
mid-section of Metropolis, but they are at LEAST as progressive as DT.
Probably more. Not QUITE as bad as Watchtower but I bet their earlier,
younger stuff was. (A note on Watchtower - Challenging slightly immature
songwriting, focus is not on melody, TONS of chops and a pretty irritating
    singer...)

Anyway, their singer has a very easy voice to get into. Nothing too
weird about this guy, he's got a german accent but still is easy to
understand. Another thing - when these guys sing in harmony, they sound
like QUEEN. Seriously! In about half the songs there's a lot of harmony
and I feel like I'm listening to a reincarnated version of Freddie and
    the Boys! (Rest his soul)

On to the guitarist. This guy knows what he's doing! Some of the time
he's creating soaring melodies, a lot of the time he's ripping out some
wicked riffs, sometimes he's playing some very catchy acoustic stuff and
sometimes he's just playing it cool while the bass player solos.

    (Neat segue, huh?)

The bass player! You can hear him! (The bass is far too hidden in a lot
of my prog CD's and that sucks!) Yup - this guy also is VERY talented.
Especially in the last song - he gets featured there. They kind of funk
    it up at the end...

About the drummer - I'm sure he's great too, I just don't have a knack
for appreciating great drumming. They're the last instrument I hear. I
could be listening to a band for years and someone could some up and say
what a great drummer they have and I'd be like, "Drummer? They have a
    drummer?" ;)

There's no keys player in the credits, but I assure you keyboard lovers -
they're there too! And they're nothing to turn your nose up to as well...

On the whole, they give me the same feeling Superior's "Behind" gives me.
Maybe it's because they're German bands or something, but I just place
those two albums as equals in my collection (and they're right up around
the top too!) Sieges Even isn't as heavy or chunky as our friend Bernd
happens to be though. They're about as heavy as DT circa I&W. (No "Wait
    for Sleep" stuff either! ;)

Also, their lyrics are kind of like Superior's. The song "Reporter" by
Sieges Even is a lot like "Dial 911" by Superior in terms of content.
Basically they're both about how crappy the Media makes the world these days.
There are other examples as well that indicate that these two bands have
similar things to write about. It must be a German thing I guess. ;)

My biggest criticizm on the album: The singer mispronounces the noun
"Addict" He stresses the second syllable instead of the first. We're
talking about the person, not the verb here. I'm a nerd like that I guess.
Heck, if I were to put out an all-German album I shudder to think of what
    I'd sound like!

So if you're looking into just taking a risk with a new prog band, I
think these guys are a REAL safe bet.

    If you like Superior...
If you like innovative Prog Metal...
If you're in the mood to have your socks knocked off by some incredible
musicians, give this a try! I promise you, you'll thank me!

                                                    - Dr. Teeth

P.S. Sieges Even's first 3 albums are available either at
    cdconnection.com or cdeurope.com (Can't remember which) and I'm
considering getting one of them just to see what the world's worst singer
sounds like! Can't be much worse than me! ;)

BTW Rip, your messages are first in my box, and yeah, it was clever
setting the date to 1985, especially since you were what, 3 YEARS OLD
THEN (just teasing, don't squish my head in a trash compactor, 'k? :).

Yeah, it'd be cool to see Portnoy on Letterman, or see JP sit in with
the band. Heck, it'd be pretty sweet seeing DS or JM sit in as well.
However, wouldn't it be really keen to see the entire band play? and
yes, they could do a song like "Silent Man," or something like that
which would go over well. Crap, why don't we have an entire episode
with the band on there (playing, being interviewed, the subject of the
Top Ten, being sent out on the street to do stupid stuff for Dave,
etc.). Sound cool? We could even have the audience made up entirely of
    jammers. I'd be there.

Not True!!! I hear Rush almost everyday at work because we listen to the
"album rock" station, KDKB and they play Rush almost everyday and have also
played TfE several times. There's another station here in Phoenix, KUPD
that plays Rush. One night the DJ played 4 Rush songs in a row along
with IME, QR, etc. Once in a while you will hear PMU too.

WDADU was released here in the USA on all LP and Cassette for sure.. CD I
don't know. The cover only said Dream Theater and had no album title on it.
The reason it says sie one and two on the back tends to make me think that
wasn't originally released on CD here in 89. Even though that doesn't make
since because Vinyl was pretty much the ugly stepchild by this time. I
remember seeing it on vinyl when it came out, but it's been really difficult
for me to find it that way.

If you would like a domestic cd of it, it's now available here on a label
    called
    One Way records.

Boycotting the RUSH album will do nothing to affect the record sales.
Those sales are predetermined by how many copies the stores order. It takes
normally three weeks of sale time to get an honest grasp on how well a CD is
doing. I for one will not boycott the album. I happen to agree with RUSH on
the issue of the "tribute". Let's face it, RUSH is still here, and making
damn good music. I mean you are not eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame
until you have been retired for Five years, so why make a tribute while they
    are still making new music?

    THOUGHTS
    part 1 of several
    by Mikey Bahr

Hi all. I hope I might beg a little of your time from you this
fine evening (or morning, depending where you're reading this) in order to
address some things. It all has to do with Dream Theater, progressive
music, net life here on the Ytsejam, or your own lives in some way, I
promise. If you find my ramblings worthless, feel free to ignore the
remaining posts... they'll be clearly marked. It's my hope that you will
not feel the need to skip 'em.

Still with me? Good. I'm gonna beg your patience now because I
need you to STAY with me as I try to go deep into each subject without
wandering too far off the track of who we are and why we're here.

Let's get the administrative bullshit out of the way first.
Ordering is OPEN for the new Dream Theater boot "Precious Things" which is
likely to be released around Thanksgiving. Feel free to check the good ol'
    website at http://www.columbia.edu/~jc309/archives/ginfo/mikebahr.html for
more on this, and there's also a NEW UPDATE, which I'll try to get to Jeff
tonight so he can put it up there. As always feel free to request this
update from me. I'll be out of town September 1-3 but then I can get your
    replies out to you.

Admin point #2... sorry to all of you for the net address
changeover from durnik@indirect.com to durnik@goodnet.com. As I mentioned,
this wasn't my choice, and I didn't want it, but here it is. Mail to the
old address is being reflected at the moment so I _shouldn't_ miss
anything from anyone, but send it to the new just to make sure. My ISP was
bought out by a local competitor so I'm stuck in upheaval while they
figure out how to save all my saved shit. :)

OK, that covers that. Also I want to mention that I'll be at the
Ytsecon III on October 12 at the La Guardia Marriott in NYC, and I hope to
see all of you there!! I'll be flying there from Phoenix. I WILL bring CDs
to sell, including a few older ones, but sorry, no Subcon or AD. I _did_
set aside 5 each of Cygnus and Antiquities just as the well was running
dry, because I wanted to make sure I could offer some at the Con. I'll
have WDATU, SFAM, Critical Mass, and Inside the Storm as well. By the way,
ITS should ship tis week if all goes well. It's almost done; I've already
got the liners and jewelcases. I'll bring other stuff that some folks
might want as well... spare copies of the Lie/To Live Forever single,
spare copies of Working Man, collector stuff, etc. If any of you have
homemade Ytsecreations or are making T shirts, caps, underwear, whatever,
BRING IT. I want it, and I bet most others do too, and you might not
    realize that yet. :)

            OK, moving on to acknowledgements.

Thanks a TON to James Runde. You guys owe this guy a lot, for it
is because of his loaning me his Core mics and Metallica IA master that I
was able to create Storm and Wrath _at all_. Naturally, he's credited in
the liners to the discs, as well as having a lot of good karma from here
on out, and so on and so forth. Thanks James!!

I want to thank Jim Beavens and Partha Mukhopcantspellhisname :)
for the reference and good CD info when that one person asked about it a
while back. I had missed the original post in the changeover of accounts,
and let me tell you all, any time you help connect someone who's a fan
with me and/or the discs I sell, it's a Double Good Thing. You've made me
happy, and likely gained yet _another_ net friend. That's where it's at,
    it really is.

Thanks also to Charone for gathering something like 40 orders for
Metallica discs for me. Way cool!! And there are still a few more of you
to thank, but I've more or less done it directly, and more to come.

An announcement about humble Mike's life. I will be wed to Melissa
Benthusen on February 7, 1998. The engagement began a few weeks ago and
we're both very happy and excited for the future with each other. This
concerns you Jammers in several ways.
            1. If you're local, and you don't already talk to me all the time
anyway, get in touch with me when you can. You know how... 602-777-0501. I
need to send you an invitation next year when it's coming closer.
            2. If you're NOT local, but you can actually attend (or think you
can), let me know, and I'll get an invite out to you too. Naturally, this
might not be known to you for months, so I'd say let me know by June 1997.
            3. I will be honeymooning in Nagano, Japan. Some of you might
notice that, quite coincidentally, a small event will take place in Nagano
right around the time after the wedding. I intend to watch some hockey,
throw a few snowballs, and generally get blasted at the 1998 Winter
Olympics. Any of you Jammers in Japan, and this especially goes for
Masayuki Daigo and Kaoru Kobayashi, I definitely want to meet you if I
can! I will tour a lot of Japan so I will likely be closer to your homes
at some point in the vacation.
Thanks to everyone who has already wished Melissa and I well. We
definitely appreciate it and our thanks go out to you.

I agree with something Scott Cook said so much that it bears
repetition. the Kiss tour that's going on right now is a MUST-SEE. It's
the pinnacle of stage shows and concert action. You'll never realize how
pathetic some modern concerts are without seeing Kiss. You'll also gain a
new appreciation for some of the neat things Rush does on tour after
seeing Kiss. This extends further to DT, but by continual stage-show
    evolution, not direct influence.

Mike Portnoy shaved his head?? Argh!! I just want it to be
positively known that I shaved my head BEFORE Mike did!! I shaved it a
month ago. Yup, all you who were at Ytsecon II who saw my long and
dangling locks will see a hardened, battle-ready, shaven-headed warrior
with a mean lean goatee when I go to Con III. And I dont want to put up
with an entire day of "you copycat!!" :) And if Mike didn't shave his
head, then I have this to say: Mike, do it. You'll thank yourself EVERY
DAY for it. I've never slept so well, nor had such good shampoo economy,
and I don't even mind standing in the wind anymore. :)

OK, that about wraps up part 1 of Thoughts. I'm going to delve
into some of the actual pressing issues in part 2, which I will post
immediately after Part 1, though due to the nuances of Jammage, you might
not get until the next Jam. Part 3 has another itinerary entirely, you'll
see. Thanks for staying with me so far. This part has been a bit
lighthearted, but it gets serious, believe me. Take it easy all!!

            TO BE CONTINUED.
