I had a few more but they were only from IRC. From now on I'll start
paying more attention to funny things said, and add them too the list. I had
    a Ytse-Dictionary too.....

    Ytse Dictionary

wanker (noun) 1. A musician or band that Jack does not like, from
reasons ranging from, but not limited to: 1. Opinion, 2. Performance,
    3. Degree of Cheesiness. 2. The same musician or band (that Jack still
dislikes) that another Ytsejammer likes, much to their dismay.

    Augie (adj) Depressed
Ex. I'm feeling very augie tonight.

Now, Augie's since become a happy camper, but the definition still stands. :)

Since it's been brought up, I may as well give a brief synopsis of my feelings on this. IF it's going to happen, it's going to happen based on the merits of the band and the taste of the powers that be. ACoS was one thing; this is entirely another. I wouldn't hold my breath thinking that mass mailing MTV or anyone is going to change things anytime soon. Besides, Operation:Revolution didn't work last year, and that was fucking widespread, and aimed at an already "mainstream" band - Queensryche.

But my final thought is this: If anyone out there is thinking of mailing MTV et al., then at least wait till the band has something to market, or you'll just annoy them and they'll ignore us in the future.

Dear MTv Head Honchos of Programming,

I saw the video for "Pull Me Under" a few years back, and subsequently bought the album. A lot of people on the Ytsejam mailing list are writing in, so I'd like to try to be a little different! Rather than just request a song or an album, I thought I'd add something besides "hey, wouldja play this fer me..."

It *really* makes a huge difference to the radio stations in Oklahoma City (where I live)... They don't play progressive music or anything that isn't either "retro", "classic", or top-40, so all we get here is current top forty, five years ago top forty, or twenty years old top forty, if you know what I mean! If you started to support progressive music more, then the stations here would feel that it is "safe" to play it, and people would have exposure to this music.

    Thanks for the trouble...

    lo Yammers,

Just a few quite comments. Bout James' voice being a deterrent for new listeners I have to partially agree. When introducing new listeners to DT there is usually one of 2 complaints, if they don't like it first off. The first and most common is that DT are to complex and its hard to follow *sigh*. The second is usually about the singing *sob*. I don't agree with them and I argue like hell and furiously scan thru CD's and songs to find ones they like. But I guess it ain't some dudes cup-o-T.

    >Well im up for it.. what will you guys say in your letter (kinda) so ill >know how to express my thoughts!! :)

I basically told MTV that there is a distinct lack of prog metal on their crappy channel. I told them to surf the net and search for bands such as Rush, DT, Fates Warning, Superior ( I couldn't help pluggin em) and see the rising demand for more progressive rock and prog metal.

    nuf said, Brett.

I have written a monstrously long (well, about 50 lines or so) not-really-rhyming song or poem (no music to it yet) and there are two lines I HATE HATE HATE, I was wondering if I could bounce them off y'all to see if someone can replace them with something better. Or if someone would like to write me some music and get CREDITED... My band is nonexistent, I'm looking (I sing)...

I ask first because if you're going to be pissed off at this LET ME KNOW ***NOW*** -- I will post it in (rolls dice) 2 days, that would be Tuesday.

The only link to DT is that I have been inspired by them, and by you guys, to dig deep and write a song fraught with feelings and thought.

OK after all of the talk of Shadow Gallery I decided to check them out. I picked up Carved in Stone, and was very impressed. These guys are pretty good and I can see a good amount of potential for growth here. I liked Carved in Stone and Ghostship. I usually don't taaake a liking to new things that easily but there is some substance with these guys. Also, I am hoping that my memory serves me right, James LaBrie's previous band was Winter Rose right??? Did they ever release anything? I know I read this somewhere but lately trivial tidbits of information haven't been the top priority in my mind.

    cheers, stan

To: MTV <feedback@mtv.com> From: Scott Herman <anthem@virginia.edu>

    Dear MTV,

I am writing to inform you a little bit about a band you may or may not have heard of, called Dream Theater.

Today a large militant activist group is planning on bombarding you with email in a massive organized attempt to get you to play videos by this band. This is a very dangerous, inflammatory extremist organization who will literally stop at nothing to spread their "Prog Rock" dogma across the globe.

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM.

Right now you may be thinking, "Well, I don't see what's wrong with playing a video by this band Dream Theater; I'm sure they have a nice grungy radio-friendly style and a gritty, raw, brooding image that will appeal to our target demographics."

DO NOT ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE FOOLED.

There is a lot you do not know about this Dream Theater. They are not normal. They refuse to play by the Rules of the Game which MTV has spent years carefully constructing.

I am pleading with you, on behalf of all of your loyal, glassy-eyed, empty-headed, Airwalk-wearing, flannel-clad, spoonfed MTV-watching sheep: Do not give in to these prog rock thugs! They are a threat to our basic ideas about music, culture, and our very way of life!

Think of the far-reaching ramifications if you decide to promote Dream Theater. They actually have the nerve to play technically demanding music, with poetic, thought-provoking, literary lyrics. Their songs are long, sometimes even longer than "November Rain." What message will this send to the Youth of Today? It will imply that, to become a famous rock band, one must actually have talent, training, and an attention span! This goes against our whole ethic! This is nothing less than blasphemy, and must be prevented.

YOU MUST NOT BE SWAYED FROM YOUR BUZZ-CLIP PROGRAM ROTATIONS.

Oh, I am now having nightmarish visions of John Senzio gaping brainlessly into the camera as, in the voice of a frightened child, he stammeringly attempts to introduce the latest "single" from this Dream Theater... and once the song ends, twelve minutes later, he is reduced to a gibbering simp curled up in the fetal position on the studio floor. Just think of the lovely Jenny McCarthy; how would she react to this Dream Theater? Their music would make her little pretty face implode under the crushing weight of her own sheer incomprehension. Think about those wonderful, beautiful, shapely, buff people on The Grind, as they stand there, blinking, looking around frantically like hunted animals as their minds wrestle with the mathematics of dancing in 7/8 - 4/4 - 9/8 meters. I shudder to think.

The concept that these Dream Theater fans do not seem to grasp is that MTV is not meant to appeal to us musically; otherwise why would so many popular bands be so popular? People like me, who truly appreciate MTV for what it is, *demand* to be manipulated. We must have our simple minds pumped full of images that you select. We must have our sound bites and tag lines. We must have our obtuse, casually scribbled lyrics and droning vocals, backed by grungy guitars and a phat dance beat.

YOU MUST GIVE US WHAT WE WANT, AFTER YOU TELL US WHAT THAT IS.

You slipped up a few years ago, when you allowed this Dream Theater's "Pull Me Under" to be played. This caused irreparable damage, resulting in vast underground legions of Dream Theater fans to appear. Now they are amassing their forces in an effort to overthrow us.

Society is not ready for this Dream Theater. They have the power to destroy us. Yes, they are the anti-grunge, and we must not allow them into the fort lest our ultimate plans of zombification of the masses for world domination slip from us forever.

YOU MUST BE STRONG AND RESIST THESE INVADERS.

Again, be forewarned of this group of "Ytsejammers". They will resort to guerrilla tactics if provoked, especially during this time of year... many of them are rather restless, as the season is approaching when their leader, who goes by the name Bafu Vai, will return to their ranks. Do not delay in refusing their efforts! When this leader rejoins them, there is no telling what they might do.

DO NOT GIVE IN. WE ARE ALL DEPENDING ON YOU.

    Be afraid.

Best regards for a promising future,

    Scott Herman.

ps. Congratulations on your recent remaking of Metallica. We doubted it could be done, but you have truly outdone yourselves in totally twisting the integrity and power out of what used to be a sadly uncompromising band.

    pps. Same with Pearl Jam.

    ppps. More Alanis, please.

pppps. I would have written more, but "Singled Out" is on.

To the dude wanting suggestions for what King's X album to buy next, get Ear Candy. You should like it if you dig Gretchen. Of course, all the albums are quite good (I even like Dogman a lot, but not as much as the others). Also, to the dude wanting Bela Fleck suggestions, try 3 Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I (well, my dad, but I get as much listening out of it) also have Tales form the Acoustic Planet, which is quite good, too. I plan on getting more of them, as Victor Wooten kicks some tail on bass (I'm a bassist), and anyone that can make me appreciate the banjo without having recurring nightmares of Deliverance has to have my respect. heck, I can even like the fake drums, as Future Man does some creative things with them. I got to see them (for free :) this summer, and I must say that these guys are right on it. Too bad the crowd seemed sort of indifferent. Later.

Hey, I just saw advertised at a local new/used music store that Iron Maiden's coming out with a 'best of' album sometime in Oct. anyone know about this? Also, it's looking more and more possible that I may be able to make it to the con as I just started working two jobs (yeah, I'm insane, but I need the cash). Hola, howdy, salutations, and all that crap,

Well, tape trade is still in the beginning stages. If you've got prog stuff that others need to hear and want to hear some new stuff yourself, send me some e-mail at tapeswap@reich.uark.edu... I'm conducting the 'Great Prog Tape Swap'... write me for more info, or to sign up just send me your name, e-mail address, and postal address.

I'll be actually kicking it off by pairing everyone off whenever I get some time here in the next week or so, so if you are signed up, don't fret... just give me a little time and we'll get this thing rocking.

    Now, on to MTV.....

How about we get some of our contacts with the band to discuss the prospects of a video for the upcoming album with them? There is supposedly an 'accessible' song on there, so that would make a good choice for a video... we could petition the record company to let them make the video... let them know there is support out here and if they'd just try to promote DT a little, maybe bigger things will happen. Then, if DT does get a new video, between us and the record company we bug the heck outta MTV until they play it... and play it again... and again... :)

    Just a thought...

All right, I got your point. But MTV is corporate. They don't care what's good, just what sells. Progressive rock is a higher form of music, not everybody can get into and understand it. i just want Dream Theater to become popular on their own terms, the way Rush did. Calls to MTV have fallen on deaf ears before, and I don't want mindless trend-following people to jump on prog rock or prog metal just because MTV is playing it. I want them to understand the bands the way we do. As long as MTV stays corporate, the way the music industry has become since the 70s, prog will remain obscure. I don't want this, but I don't want prog to be what alternative is now. Look at 80s metal like Bonjovi, (don't flame me saying that Bonjovi isn't metal, I am just using this because this is what I've heard bonjovi referred to as). In the 80s, everybody who wanted to be cool loved Bonjovi. Who loves him now? Die-hard fans. Would you get a positive response from many people about bonjovi now? Probably not, at least not around where I am. Why? Because the trend passed him by. He has his loyal core of fans, and he still sells records, but the trend has passed him by. Rush was never really a part of the trend, but they have a massive loyal following, and radio has to pay attention to them now, a la the premier of Counterparts 3 years ago and test for Echo this past week. This is where I want DT and Yes, and ELP to be, successful under their terms and not the trend of the month. Hope this is a bit clearer.

Seriously, I need a ride to the con. Anybody in Jersey who wouldn't mind dragging me from the back bumper can email me at s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu. I will pay for gas if you like.
