You know, I could easily say what you said about bands with too much guitar.
Cairo isn't just keys. Their guitar player kicks ass, and they even have a
bass player you can hear because he isn't buried under six or seven guitar
overdubs. The drummer is quite good, too. The singer is great. So what, they
sound like ELP. I love them. And ELP is heavy keys too, and they are a very
well-respected rock band. Why are keyboards such a bad thing? Are guitarists
mad that we can do more with our cheesey synths than they can? Are guitarists
jealous because they can fake their way through on their instrument and we
have to become proficient to get respect? Are guitarists mad that there are
more people to slander the name of the guitar like most alternative
guitarists today than there are keyboard players?> Why are keyboard so
disrespected? Somebody tell me, really want to know, because I am sick of
    keyboard bashing.

I liked the Cairo CD, but it's one of those CDs you have to be In the
Mood for -- to me, they sounded a lot like Yes, which is a cool thing
as long as you're expecting it and like Yes, which I do.

Only one shopping day left before you have to not-shop for T4E and
wait a week. :) 96rock here finally played the T4E album premiere,
a few days after the rest of the planet (they waited until 11pm
Sunday, so as not to offend the rednecks too much with brilliance).
Sounded good upon first listen, not terrific, but not lame.

    Five Gratuitously Kewl CDs/tapes:

    1. Superior, behind <--- so far, best CD I've heard during 1996
    2. Bonedance, 7-track demo (just ask Skadzzzz :))
    3. The Hunger, Devil Thumbs a Ride ("Vanishing Creme" is excellent)
    4. KoRn, KoRn
    5. Our Lady Peace, Naveed

Hey there! Regarding what Digital Man posted in the jam, I don't care if DT becomes "commercial" or not, because I'll buy their next album (preferably a double, hehheh) the instant I see it. If I don't like it, which is most unlikely, then maybe I'd put off buying the one after that until I'd heard it. The fact is, and I know you all agree, DT is one of a very few musical entities today whom I trust to release new music that I like. No pretentiousness intended there, just the simple truth. "Commercialism" has little to do with my opinions about music, since I don't have a radio in my car and I try to avoid MTV (except for B&B). That way, to me, nothing suffers from overexposure - if I don't want to hear something, I don't play it.

I really don't know how I'd vote on this issue, though - I realize that some of the things I love most about DT are exactly what makes them "uncommercial" - getting rid of them would mean possibly losing some of their appeal to me. That's a very selfish attitude, however, and I would be very happy if the members of DT became millionaires - they deserve it. They've already given me (and all of you) a lot of wonderful music that could not have been created by anyone else. What could I possibly give them in return to show my gratitude? My support is all I have to offer. I'll buy the albums, go see the shows, (if they ever play within 500 fookin' miles of here...) etc.

What the hell...I'll go out on a limb and say I'll support whatever they do. That's not a promise - that's a prediction. I trust DT to keep doing things I love and learn from, and to keep getting better a doing them. If you haven't skipped to the next post yet, thanks for reading.

I don't know about the Queensryche song but I'm quite sure that she is the one on the Victor album (thou I haven't heard it yet :-( ) since she is canadian and have spent most of the time since her last album doing guest appearances on other artists records. But after listening to her latest album I would guess she's the one for Queensryche too.

Just as I'd like DT to stay in obscurity. IMO, the worst thing that could happen to DT is to get recognishit. They're better off as far as they can be from the music industry.

Yes.. but if DT goes COmmercial..their music IS gonna suffer through some sad changes.. much as Metallica's did..when One got rotation on mTv.. they said "Whoa we could get used to this" then they made the Black album..which is still a good one,but has no comparison with And justice or Puppets,. and now they made Load..which is completely within the norm of music right now.. simple riffs,no solo's, etc.. If in fact DT was to become commercial..i think they would have to compromise their music..and that would suck.. if they can get recognition..let it be because people finally understand what is complex thought-out music and whats just plain crappy music..and the difrence betweeen a well trained musical ensemble..and just some kids wanking together..

    SORRY, ALL!

Totally brain cramped on unsubscribing. But now that I know I may win a spot for "months most frequent poster" I regret nothing! :)

I just got back from two days in Scarborough, England, three days in London and three days in Paris. Scarborough was a wedding, then just some kick around time. For you jammers who live in these countries, I envy you! I'd take waiting longer for Dream Theater any day if I got to live in one of these cities.Jammers, if you EVER have the slightest chance to go, DO IT! It was my 4th time to Europe and I'm still amazed!

Anyway, sorry for not unsubcribing for the time I was away. LATER-

    Hey all:

Scott had the PERFECT flavor of an MTV parody letter with his last posting. I was dying laughing! I mean, I could truly see these host(esses) on MTV cringing and having nervous breakdowns at a lengthy song, or progressive, non-grungy music. This is why I DO NOT watch MTV, and thanks to the e-mail address provided by other ytsejammers, I let MTV know why I don't watch them anymore. I DID put in a request for Dream Theater music, but told them that since they don't play videos, I just don't watch their channel.

Well, it would probably be an embarrasment having some of those shows actually playing DT music. Although the publicity never hurt any. We just need to get some intelligence back into teen idol music, rather than the perpetual-humdrum-dance-"I want you,baby"-drum-machine-programmed- mindlesscrap-notalent-bass on the downbeat-type music.

I'm impressed. That was a great letter. Are you really going to send that? Those are the kinds of letters that should be sent to publications such as Rolling Stone ("toilet paper with pictures"). Maybe some people could be reached, and, if not, we can remind them that there is an alternative (pun intended, of course) to their manufactured, dictated norms.

How can you go on about what this band sounds like when YOU'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD THEM!? >Am I right or what? Apparently Cairo sucks big wanker unless you are >HEAVILY into keys stuff. I've been on this list for at least a year now >(has it been two?) and I seriously can't recall someone actually REALLY >LIKING Cairo. Maybe people would go as far as to say that they don't >suck, but that's about it. =) No you're not right. FYI, Cairo doesn't suck. They are a really good band that happens to have an excellent keyboardist but also has a very good guitar player. In my opinion, they mixed the guitar a bit too far back and that's probably why people may think they're a "keyboard band" but the man does have some chops and the band as a whole is talented. In case people are looking for a more informed opinion (rather than yours), Cairo has a "big" sound similar to Yes with some Genesis and ELP type musical passages. If you recall early Genesis, the guitar seemed to be mixed a bit back which sounded textural rather than what you might hear in prog metal. Their singer is very good and they have intelligent lyrics and nicely arranged harmonies. I can understand that people who prefer prog metal might not like a prog rock band that features keys a bit more. Again, in my opinion, the only other aspect of their production that could be improved on is that the drums are also a bit too far back in the mix. This is a solid first effort and should be supported by the prog community. We need more bands doing this type of material to succeed. >I'm just saying this to save people money... Just because the We The Jam >(Hey - I kinda like that...) promote Magna Carta and their bands, doesn't >mean that every MC band is awesome. > >So one more time: If you're looking to pick up Cairo, BE PREPARED FOR >TONS OF KEYS!!!!!! People: Imprint the following association in your heads: > >Cairo = Keys >Cairo = Keys >Cairo = Keys > >Got it??? Now I don't want to hear a WORD about someone whining that >Cairo has too much keys for you!!! > >WE ALREADY KNOW!!!!!!!! >CAIRO HAS TOO MUCH KEYS FOR EVERYBODY!!!!!!!! Too much keys relative to what? Again, please don't be so absolute and I doubt you speak for all the jammers out there.
