hey, I just scored some killer deals on some good CDs today at, yes,
Now Hear This (man, I like that store more and more each time I go
    there). I got King's X's Faith , Hope, Love and Rush's Counterparts
for, get this, $1.99 on CD, and Bruce Dickinson's Skunkworks for $3.99.
They also had multiple copies of Counterparts for that price, as well as
Megadeth's Countown to Extinction for $1.99 on CD. They even had a
Marillion CD (can't remember which one, but I believe it was from 1989,
and it said printed in England on the back) for $4.99. I will probably
pick both of those up soon (as soon as I send off my Precious Things
payment - it's in the mail tomorrow - well, today if you want to get
technical - Mike :). There's also a record/CD sale this Sunday at The
American Czech Center somewhere in St. Louis. I remember going there
something like 2 years ago. They had a pretty decent selection of DT
boots, as well as many others of interest (they actually had quite the
crapload of goodies :). If any St. Louis jammers (or anyone else for
that matter, that might be in the area) wants details, e-mail me and
I'll let you know what all else I know about it. Cheers.

Anybody else out there catch Bela and co. on PBS tonight? They jammed
along with the Boston Pops! Wow. Talk about phenomenol bass... I
don't own any of their albums at present. Recommendations, anyone?

I, too, just got Working Man, and was bracing myself for the supposed
"awful" vocals on "Natural Science". Devon Townsend has got to be one
of the weirdest singers I've ever heard, but bad? I say nay.

    >Or a Bass Player?
Metropolis: Pt. I. It's got that friggin' thing that Myung does in the
middle. Since I haven't tried it yet (of course, the tab I have for it
form the JM video is for a 6-er, and I have a measly four-string, and I
need to get my action seriously adjusted before I can pull any of that
off), I don't really know how difficult it really is, but it just sounds
so cool and amazing, I know a number of bassists that don't know much
    about DT would be floored.
For a drummer, i have actually tried with the opening section of 6:00,
and with The Ytsejam solo from LiT. I mean, it wasn't hard core
conversion time, though. More of a casual thing, so it didn't have a
really intense effect. Besides, that was also sort of spur of the
    moment.
the others I'd have to think about a bit. Cheers.

Oh yeah, I do remember having Wait for Sleep on one time while a

Depends. Metal guitarists get MEtropolis or PMU. Less heavy ones maybe
get Surrounded or Innocence Faded. But they all hear Slient Man.

Well im my opinion..thebest way to show people DT is having them watch LiT and other videos..that waythey can listen and SEE how brilliant they are.. because some people might need a visual aid to really know and really experience the whole DT thing :) for example myung's part in metropolis .sure it sounds really cool..but for a non bassist..well it wont sound like much..just as cool.. but if the person sees Myung doing it.. well.. theyll say "whoa" ..jsut the same with petrucci and nin-guitarrists..

When I was in Paris back in April, I got Rage Against The Machine's Evil Empire a whole week before it came out over here! (At the equivilant of $20, but a good deal to get so soon, plus the colors are slightly different on the cover).

    Hiya, Kids.

So, i'm sitting here on a Saturday afternoon listening to King Crimson's "Starless And Bible Black", which kicks much ass, and the 132 messages in my mailbox have gone away. I've come to thinking about the new Rush album.

No, i didn't hear the premier of it, for i was busy...but i _HAVE_ heard TfE a few times, and i don't think i like it very much, for a reason like:

Do you really need to say VERTIGO 120913 times? Is there a point? I dunno, but i think that Neil's getting more and more political. I could be wrong. Musically, Alex talks alot. His guitars are all over the record, which i like. Neil's in the background, which is new. Geddy? Well, he's just Geddy. :)

So, i have mixed reviews on TfE. I have to hear the album to give a full opinion, which brings me to dee-tee (look, ma. dream thetaer content. woohoo!) As much as we want to see the Theater on empTV, and on radio, i really don't see that as the case, and i'll explain why:

The Ytsejam (with the band included, since they know of us, and are doing ther Big Brother act currently) is a very closeknit group. We know each other, we hang out...we're friends. _IF_ empTV were to pick up the Theater as a "buzz band", then they would be classified as trendy. Do we really want this? Do we really want 1000's of angstfull teenagers (well, more than we have now) to think of the Theater as trendy? Can you see the guys in this kinda light? I particulary don't want to. I'm sure they'll cross over, and they money will roll in, but it just won't be the same. They won't play a Birch Hill. They won't go to a Ytsecon. They'll be playing at MSG, The Spectrum (here in Philly), among other places. We'll be removed. I think one of the reasons i like the Theater so much is that i've gotten to hang with John, Mike and Derek. They're nice guys. They're normal guys who just happen to play an instrument really well. Maybe i fear that we'll be put on the backburner for the record company, and the "new" fans they'll get once they crossover into the mainstream.

Wow. I sure can ramble. Ok. I'm done.

Sure, we want everyone to know how great the Theater is, but there's a downside. Let's be realistic, tho. Most teen's want ANGST lyrics, and easy music. The Theater is very complex, and i don't think the kids could get into it, for it being too complex for them.

as for "alternative" music being lesser, i disagree. It's not lesser, just different. (Remember, the term "alternative" is a subjective term, since what we consider to be alternative is now the mainstreem). In fact, keeping with the defination of alternative, i could say that Dream Theater is alternative. It is: an alternative to the current music out. So there. :p

I picked it up yesterday (the 6th) 4 days before release date. What can I say, I have friends in local retail. :) I think it is similar to CP although perhaps a little more aggressive. I like most of it but it isn't the Rush that I grew up with anymore. Granted, everyone changes, but it's still missing something. My favorites so far are Virtuality, Test For Echo and Totem.

It seems unlikely that it would happen, but if the band thinks that a double album is the best way to present their next musical offering, they should go for it. While few (if any) bands have reached a larger audience with a double album, ultimately the music should come first. There's a first time for everything; maybe a new Dream Theater double album could start an exciting chapter in both Dream Theater and double album history. For an example of a band challenging conventional wisdom and their record company and triumphing, see Rush and the release of 2112. Speaking (or typing, I guess) of Rush, I just read the lyrics to the new album. So far, I'm a little disappointed, but maybe they'll grow on me (like Images and Words did).

Hey, everyone, I thought you guys would get a kick out of this story. I was at Dunkin Donuts in Valley Stream (Long Island for those who do not know) and I was wearing a Queensrche shirt. Some guy walks up to me and was like "QUEENSRYCE!!!!!!" So I just smiled and went to the counter. The guy was like "What about METALLICA!!!!!!". I said what about them?" and he said "they're good too, right?" so I'm like "Yeah they're good." Trying to ignore the guy, he said "What about Fates Warning?" So I started to pay attention to him. I was talking to him for a couple of minutes, and when I brought DT up he told me Charlie Dominici became a crackhead in Hewlett(I think it was Hewlett. I could be wrong). Someone I know said that he was getting filled up at a gas station and he was wearing a DT shirt. Some he said Charlie walked up to him and was like "I sung on their first album, you know" and showed him his tatoo. Then a few days later he was pulling out of his driveway and Charlie was passing by and stopped and honked his horn and waved. Interesting isn't it?
