James' vocals...my girlfriend doesn't like him very much because of the way he
moves on stage, kind of full of self-importance and all (that's her opinion, so
don't flame me). I never really pay a lot of attention because I am a guitarist
and my eyes are on J.P. most of the time (his hands, rather, and following the
arc of any picks he throws). And Portnoy baffles me too. On some bootlegs,
especially when he announces songs, the huge exhale after words *is*
irritating. "How are you New Yorkhhhhhh" I know a few people who would really
be into Dream Theater if they had a vocalist like, well, James Hetfield or
something (OH NO, *NOW* I'VE SAID IT! :-) ). James takes some getting used to,
more so on "Awake" and "I&W", but it's fine with me. He's cool, and
    professional.

And speaking of Mariah Carey and James...Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb once
sang together...I think it would be cool to have James and Mariah do something
(it would beat Boyz2Men, anyway). Or with Bjork, the best and cutest female
    singer in the world?

    But...

Now tremble with me....what would Dream Theater have been like if King Diamond
had replaced Charlie? Would they be singing about old women in wheelchairs? :-)
(Having said that, I *am* a huge King Diamond/Mercyful Fate fan; have every one
    of their albums).

Maybe that would be an interesting thread: What DT would be like with a
different singer. We know what they sound like with Barney or Bruce. But what
of, lemme think, Lemmy?! Devin Townsend?! (SCARY!) Geddy? Let your mind run
    free...

One final thing: I've been hearing so many different things on the new album
release...but is there a reasonable chance it'll be released this year? And
about the double CD thing...if they had all that material, they could play the
second CD live only, not release it, and Mike Bahr could collect the best
quality tracks and put them (maybe including "Metropolis Pt. II"?) on one of
his CDs? I can't see why DT couldn't do 2 separate CDs, like Guns'n'Posers did.
Maybe Mike Portnoy wouldn't mind Mike Bahr putting one or two of those tracks
on "PT"? By the way..."Scarred" won't be on PT, will it? I think that's a real
    omission/ommission (sp?).

I've rambled on for too long. Bye...

to be honest, i know not of "chasing time", but you should check out "parallels". labrie sings on that one (ok, only a bit) and musically it's very good. very much in the vein of dream theater ("images and words" era).

    the guy is called DEVIN.

anyway, vai sings "rescue me or bury me". BUT if you want to get some mellow-sounding singing, get some neat parts of "down deep into the pain". i like the contrast between the verses, bridge and chorus. damn, it gets me everytime i hear it. :-) "survive" is also more than multi-faceted. (i've spent hours trying to work out the background vocals; believe me, it was worth it.)

I agree with this. I have another prime example of another band that doesn't get the airplay that has a larger fan base than what people think -- Manowar. I went to their show at a small, small club in Massillon, Ohio on 9/7. These fans were chanting lyrics, reciting "The Warrior's Prayer"... and that was all while in line waiting to get in!!! DT is like Manowar in the respect that they don't get the airplay, but their (Manowar's) fan base in Northern Ohio was larger than I thought. I have the feeling that Ben is right about DT (coming from an unfortunate soul that has yet to see DT in concert).

    Hello Jammers,

Just a quick review of Cairo. They are very keyboard heavy, OK music, I personally just get tired when the same keyboard sound is used from song to song on chromatic solos, even if the musician is talented (which he is). The music just seems to drag. If you are a big fan of Keith Emerson, go for it, this keyboard player obviously is as well. Otherwise you are better off to get some of the other Magna Carta albums, IMO go for Shadow Gallery, they are by far my favorite Magna Carta band.

    Hello Jammers,

I think the old Commercialism thread is rearing its ugly head again. If Dream Theater becomes popular, it is NOT the same as them becoming commercial. Commercial implies an attempt to sound like what is current popular in music today, in an attempt to make money. Popular means that people really like your band and buy your music. Now lots of times, a band that gets popular will become commericial (the old, "they dumped truckloads of money on my lawn", the Crusty the Clown excuse), ie MEtallica. But some bands try to capitalize on the popular style of the day, Oasis, and the shitload of Nirvana sound alike bands that popped up a few years ago and are dying out.

If Dream Theater gets a lot of MTV airplay, they do not automatically become a commercial band, as long as they maintain their songwriting integrity. Don't worry about that guys, the scary thing is that the band is likely to maintain their integrity and get dropped by their label. You guys and girls should be more frightened of the latter than the former.

Hello Pat, (and Jammers, this stuff is informative and I have spent 30 minutes writing it, so I thought it ought to go to the jam)

Check out the Progressive Rock WWW Site run by my friend Adam Levin

    http://prog.ari.net/prog/

It should have links to the pages with info on most of these bands. If you follow the Unsigned bands link in my sig, there are reviews of Ivanhoe, Mastermind, Anekdoten, Timescape, and Iluvatar. I've met the members of Iluvatar, Mastermind, and Anekdoten.

    Short reviews:

Garden Wall - An Italian neo-progressive band, I haven't heard their music Anekdoten - A Swedish band expanding on the music of 1970s King Crimson, the first disk Vemod, is in the vein of Red, the second disk is more eclectic and angry, both are very impressive.

Anglagard - Another Swedish band, lots of long instrumental passages and Mellotron use, some symphonic parts augmented by heavy guitar and Swedish lyrics.

ArsNova - A Japanese Trio of ladies drums, bass, keyboards, doing the ELP style of music, suppose to be great live. They just finished a east coast US tour with MAstermind and Deux Ex Machina.

Ivanhoe - Heavier incarnation of Dream Theater, accented European vocalist, I think it is quite good.

Mad Puppet - ? on this one Timescape - Sent me their EP - another DT style band, a bit heavier, it was pretty cool.

    Iced Earth - ? Clockwork - ?

Mastermind - a heavy, guitar-synth monster of a band, featuring the overamplified Marshall stacks of Bill Berends and his MIDI equipment, accompanied by driving bass and heavy Carl Palmer style drumming. An intense live experience here, I recommend the second album, Brainstorm for chops, the third album Tragic Symphony for more mature songwriting.

Altura - Another prog-metal Magna Carta band, I heard it in a music store, fairly impressive, sounded a lot like older Rush.

Lemur Voice - Another Magna Carta band, closer to the sound of DT, they were really impressive, if I hadn't just spent $60 on CDs I would have bought it.

Tempest - Magna Carta band, Celtic meets metal, suppose to be a bit like Jethro Tull.

Cairo - Very much an ELP style band, keyyboardist has incredible chops, it is hard to hear the guitar, but they are some good parts. Production is very glossy, this tends to put me to sleep. This is an album I had and sold, I just got tired of listening to it after three or four listens. If you are a big ELP fan (which I am not) you should like it.

Spock's Beard - A Syn Phonic label band I believe, they are suppose to be impressive though I haven't heard the disk.

Iluvatar - one of my favorite neo-progressive bands, they live in my hometown and play here quite often. They take the sound of Wind & Wuthering Genesis and mix it with some Rush/Yes sound. All of the musicians are solid, the feature for me is the songwriting and Glenn McLaughlin's voice, which is very impressive. Live they are just incredible now, when I first saw them live three years ago, they weren't very tight.

    Other things to check out:

Finneus Gauge - New band featuring Chris Busby from echolyn on keyboards, I heard a few demos at Progscape and they are going to kick some serious ass. Their first live performance is the night of Ytsecon III, and will probably keep me from going to the con, I want to see them that bad.

Sounds a bit like the newer Metal Church at times, but overall, they rock.

PS - USA will sweep the Canadians in the World Cup of Hockey finals"

I have yet to hear Cairo...I have to agree that Magellan bites...Shadow Gallary's CiS I have, and I love it - not nearly as polished as DT, but what do you expect with low budget recording...

I'm new to the jam and really enjoying it! I think DT is by far the most outstanding and influential group I have ever found. Here's my DT intro story (skip if you want)

I'm a fairly recent convert to DT and I've brought a stack of people with me the last year or so. I was pretty much out of new (decent) music during the long period of college (medical school is brain damage) until I heard Pull Me Under on a Denver radio station and I was taken! Of course the DJ did not name the band or the song so I was lost. I put a blank tape in my stereo at home and waited. One morning I was driving away from my house and PMU came on again. I drove the back at high speed, ran back into the house and frightened my kids by hurdling the couch and diving toward the stereo with the tip of my finger barely pressing RECORD. Well, I got the last minute or so and took the tape to a local CD where it was easily identified - the rest is history.

    Cheers, Kevin D.

    Stuff playing recently

TIAMAT - Wildhoney (Century Media) SAVATAGE - Dead Winter Dead DT - ACoS MAGELLAN - Impending Ascension (Magna Carta) BLACK JESTER - Welcome to the Moonlight Circus (Avalanche)
