          Hi Kids!

I would just like to start this by saying isn't it great to have all
these part time jammers back? (Groan)

RUSH: TFE I really like it! I also find it amazing that it seems none
of you has an ounce of will power. You said " I will boycott their album
because of the tribute thing". I doesn't seem too many people boycotted! Get
the facts before opening your mouths and speaking irrationally. Do you
really know if it was RUSH who put the brakes on Working Man? No, I didn't
think so. So don't blame them for it unless you know for sure. I for one
have not listened to the "Tribute" in more than two weeks, and I must say
TFE will remain in the circle alot longer than the "tribute".

As for the frequent poster thing. I scan right over Dream, and Damon's posts
now. Why bother reading, they have nothing to say. Didn't living on Long
Island teach you the fine art of restraint Dreamnday? Man, if you're bored,
play solitaire, read a book, or jerk off. Don't waste our bandwidth!

P.S. Neil Peart, now using DW drums

    Hey Jammers...
Carlo here (aka "Fates" aka "YtseSatan")
one of the "old school jammers"

First of all I want to remind all you NYC Jammers about Prog Night!!! I
saw a question about it a couple of jams ago and want to address it
because it needs all the support it can get...cuz its obviously getting
none from the radio or tv. Prog-Night is ALMOST ALWAYS a free event at
the Rock-N-Roll Cafe, 149 Bleeker Street (212) 677-7630 in the Village
(Downtown Manhattan) that is held the FIRST Wednesday of every month.
The last couple of shows have been absolutely AMAZING!!!
I've seen some insanely talented progressive bands such as the
always incredible SOUNDSCAPE, MONOLITH, BOUD DEUN, MASTERMIND
(twice!!)..ya just gotta luv these guys!, and this past Sept. 4th saw a
small East Coast Prog Tour which consisted of MASTERMIND (great web page
too!), ARS NOVA (all female progressive trio..really dark
vibes...AWESOME!), and supposed to see DEUS EX MACHINA (but they dicked
out on everyone and left because it was getting late..Stronzoni!)
Point is..just like what happened with the poor turnout with Prog
Day '96 in Chapel Hill..if you're in the area and you LOVE progressive
music there is absolutely no reason to miss this great once a month
gig! Plus, the promoter of the whole thing, Bob Wolf's Sights and
Sounds, has a counter full of progressive bands from all over the world
for you to buy. IF YOU LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE METROPOLITAN AREA...GO TO
    PROG-NIGHT!!!!!!!
OK..on to the next topic..LEMUR VOICE!!!!! I've seen lots of people
posting about this great band so I will too. Incidentally, I bought
them at prog-Night..(He's got almost every Magna Carta release too!) and
was floored by the musicianship! Marcel..I know you read the jam
occasionally and I just have to say that you're leads are so tasteful
and clean, nothing sounds out of place...I can't say enough good things
about the disc.."Akasha Chronicles" and "Prime of Passion" are wickedly
complex!!! Great solo on Freewill too....keep it up!
I was also wondering if anyone else saw JASON BECKER on the MDA
Telathon (Jerry lewis telathon) with Eddie Van Halen by his side. Its
things like this that makes you appreciate how important music is in our
lives..and how trivial our little every day problems are when someone
else is just happy to wake up and see another day.
I've also noticed lots of people getting frustrated because they
can't find any good progrssive bands to get into other than the usual
American bands and that no one sells them around their area.
Well, as is painfully clear...trendy, non-thought provoking,
zombie chord playing bands are huge now so you'll have to search pretty
good to find a reliable outlet..I have searched and the absolute BEST,
RELIABLE, and cost efficient source is 1) Denis Gulbey (editor of THE
Power, Progressive Metal fanzine in the United States called SENTINEL
STEEL)..seriously people..this amazing mag gives BURNNN some scorching
competition in terms of content, reviews (over 200 album reviews!?!?),
interviews, mailorder companies..THE WORKS...along with the best source
of power, progressive metal I've ever seen, Denis also overseas his own
    mailorder business...import CD's are just $12!!!!!!! Domestic are $8!!
He also just started up his own record label called SENTINEL STEEL MUSIC
with the hopes that power, progressive metal is on the verge of a tidal
wave of a comeback! Anyway..he is the one of the most sincere people
I've met in terms of doing it for the music...here's the info if anyone
is interested. SS#3 was just released and its monstrous..$5 for 135
pages quality music (HELSTAR, ICED EARTH, ANGRA, IRON MAIDEN, ATTACK,
GAMMA RAY, FATES WARNING, BLIND GUARDIAN..etc.)
    contact Denis Gulbey at:

    SENTINEL STEEL
    P.O. Box 123
    Rockaway, NJ 07866 U.S.A.
    (201) 586-1058

***If he asks, tell him Carlo D'Angelo told you about him.

Another great source is Dream Disc...they will special order any CD you
want..have tons of cool stuff...can't find their address right now, but
their phone number is (219) 347-8080.

Also, if anyone here goes to Manhattan College or the College Of Mt.
St. Vincent in Riverdale (right on the border of the Bronx and
Westchester), I'm gonna be a DJ for the Mt. student radio station (WMSV
850AM)....I don't have a definite time slot yet, but you can bet that my
three hours a week are gonna be the sickest, most intense three hours
that campus has EVER heard...think i'll start the whole show off in
style with the mesmerizing "Ivory Gate of Dreams"..I think my .sig is in
    order here :-)
I totally find myself laughing hysterically whenever I see LaBrie
doing these little fairy dances in the background while the solos are
going on. I have the Japan vid and the Manhattan Center ('93...was at
the same show too..missed Thought Industry damnit!!) and I can't help
but crack up when I see james doing these elf twirls across the
stage..pretty damn funny if you ask me. What's not funny is that they
don't repreoduce the vocal harmonies live..TTT chorus sounds so wimpy
when they cheese out and point the mic towards the audience to fill in
the huge chorus..that just plain sucks!
Also....some random bands have appeared that are INCREDIBLE!!!
Nevermore is top-notch..can't get better than Warrel Dane..he is the
vocal god of darkness!!!! And i MUST promote this CD I got almost a
year ago and they are virtually unknown in the states..the band is
called ELDRITCH and their album is called "Seeds Of Rage" (out on LMP
and Empire Records..same as ANGRA I think). No shittin' you guys..these
guys blow away DT and Fates combined..and i live for Fates!!! Seriously,
this is easily one of those 5 desert island discs that one cannot live
without..must be heard to be believed is all I can say..those who havent
heard of these Italian geniuses are missing out..

Well..it looks like I've finally run out of steam until I decide to
post in another 3 months as usual. For those that have actually made it
this far in my post..thanks for stickin' around...you get a nice big
odd-timed progressive thumbs up! This music needs support and we're
gonna be the ones to make it happen.
Thats all for now....remember...GO TO PROG-NIGHT in
    NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    cheers,
       Carlo (aka "Fates" aka "YtseSatan")

    P.S. SigWars II...I'm down for that..but remember mine..I'm wondering
if i should resurrect the now legendary "Ivory Gate of Dreams" .sig from
its ashes once again to show these new Jammers the true masters...well
how about just 1/4 of it for now..:-)

Hey, something potentially cool actually happened at work tonight. One
of my supervisors (who is into some prog) came up with two extra tickets
for the Tull/ELP show in St. Louis. Well, since his girlfriend already
bought tix, and these were free extras, he gave them to a coworker who's
dad wants to go. If he can't make it, I get them. Tull/ELP for free.
    I can handle that. Cheers.

Well, I see that somebody has made the first inaccurate statement of the
school year. I have nothing to say? Somehow, I want to dispute that. I have
quite a bit to say, both DT and non-DT related. I have quite a few people who
don't seem to mind my posts, and I really don't know what I ever did to you
to draw this abuse. Nothng against dreamday, but he just makes love to his
reply key, and sometimes he has something to say and sometimes he doesn't.
Nobody ever flames BafuVai for saying nothing, nobody ever flames Ben, they
are well-respected. And, sorry Ben, but not every single one of your posts is
DT related. In fact, I challenge the Gods of Ytsejam who love to plaster me
and Dreamday to come up with all their posts and tell me that they are all
DTC. you can't. Why, because the post I am replying to had not one ounce of
DTC in it. yeah, I don't always have DTC, but I bring something to the table
besides a complaint. I don't have my thumb up my ass like you do, whoever you
are. Sorry, I don't think I should have to put the energy into having my
speech synthesizer spell out your name. I am not going to defend why I post
so much, especially to you. There would be far less wasted bandwidth if you
pull your head out of your ass and stop posting about how me and Dreamday
waste bandwidth. Yeah, maybe Dreamday can merge his posts, but I can't.
Logistsics, buddy. So, go listen to some Rush, go listen to the tribute go
listen to whatever you want, but get off my fucking cloud, all right?

Well, Jim, you raise some good points.

I guess it really ISN'T all that smart to have the updates right
there on... _THE OFFICIAL BAND WEB PAGE_... damn, that's so fucking
hilarious now that I actually take a step back and comprehend it! :) I'm
literally chuckling with ironic amusement... I really have been asleep on
the job to not notice this until now. :)

OTOH, them being there accounts for like 70% of all orders, so
    it's sort of a live-by-the-sword, die-by-the-sword situation.

In many instances, before branching into a new band situation, I
preview the boot climate and mention in an inconspicuous way that "if the
band doesn't want me to do these, I'll stop/not do it/cancel." VH and Live
management actually decided to follow up, for whatever reason. Actually, I
have no idea if they ever really got word, I just had word passed to me
from Jimmy Lang that he had faxed them my update, and they told him to
tell me that I'd better the hell not do it. In this case, I have little
choice but to trust Jimmy and do the smart thing. Better to have the wool
pulled over my eyes and back off to relative safety than to have a
perfectly clear view of the bullet coming straight for my head. :| So in a
way, I owe Jimmy one, because he warned me ahead of time.

As for DT mgmt, I'm in a unique position. Every last member of
their management team EXCEPT Rob Shore, John Petrucci, and one other
person (I forget who) has complimentary copies on hold of every disc I do,
and they enjoy them thoroughly. Certain individuals connected with the
band have said that as long as I don't do anything to make DT look bad or
lose integrity, and as long as I never counterfeit released material, I'll
be permitted to continue my fan projects in quiet solitude.

However, Jim, you've instilled a bit of vigilance in me tonight
and I want to act on it now. I want to rein in a little and exert a
slightly tighter control on where my updates are going.

THIS IS TO ALL DT-ITES WITHA WEB PAGE!
Would you do me a huge favor? I would really apprecaite it. If you
currently have my updates on your site, or a mirror of them, or a link to
them, go ahead and eliminate it. This applies to everyone EXCEPT Jeff Chew
(the one website I will continue to have them on) and Skadz (who has them
on retrieval anyway). I really appreciate all of you for the promotion and
positive word of mouth, and I want to down a few beers with y'all for the
help. But for now, it'd be a good thing if many sounds were silenced...
specifically, the sounds of my advertisement.

As far as the Tori CD thing, I won't have any problem (other than
poor speed of production) finishing out the 100-disc run, and the Cd plant
has let things drop since I opted to flush the print run rather than
accept the run along with an investigation, disclosures, the need to
retain an attorney, and so on. What I need now is a CD plant that is
a little less morally attentive. To put it flatly I need a boot house to
work out of again. Any help is appreciated.

Oh, to anyone who's worried I might be imprisoned or whatever,
don't. I made peace with the possible consequences back in December 1994
when I started the Subcon project. I would never ever do anything
differently if I had a chance to do it all over (except I would have
predicted more accurate release dates... grin) and if the powers-that-be
are so concerned with my activities that they'll spend triple what I make
doing each project just to shut me down, then so be it, I'll live with the
consequences. I have a number of friends who have said they'll willingly
continue my work, including using backup masters to fill orders that are
still outstanding (if any) at the time of my arrest. Besides, it's really
a civil matter anyway. I'm nearly broke all the time, and they won't get
shit out of me with a lawsuit (can't squeeze blood from a turnip) so a
realistic worst-case scenario has me getting court orders leveled against
me and the greater CD industry made aware of my actions (a blacklist,
effectively). Not that I'm in any different position NOW though.

Take care everyone, my sky may be afire, but that doesn't mean
yours has to be, and the rains are on the horizon.

    Hi again,

I had thought of staying out of this thread but I feel that I have to
give some of You my view on the subject.

    BLevy@aol.com wrote:

I must confess that after I got the LiT video short after it was released
I was a bit dissapointed with James preformance on certain parts duting
the concert and with that in memory I was AMAZED when I had the plesure
to see DT live on the Awake tour in Malmoe here in Sweden.

The whole band had matured (IMHO) but James, I think, had made the
    biggest progress.
I might have cought him on a exceptional night but he sang with great
    confidence and emotion,
and I did not notice one bum note during the whole concert!

Well just my 2 cents on this subject.

;) We might consider having all the area Jammers
that are going get together before hand. Let me
    know what you guys think.

On another note, spent Labor Day in the backwoods
of the Ozarks for a canoe trip and one afternoon
we were sitting around the camp when I decided to
educate some of my friends in the pleasures of
listening to proper music, mainly DT and Superior.
Anyway, we had Superior on the CD player when all
of a sudden someone from another camp comes over.
I'm thinking that this redneck is going to bitch
because we had the music up too loud and it wasn't
fucking Garth Brooks or something, when he goes,
"Hey man, who the fuck is the band? Sounds like
some of the best music I've heard in a long time!"
I was floored, not because I didn't agree but that
this hoosier (no offense to anyone from Indiana)
actually liked the music. As it turned out within
an hour or two, we had a major party underway,
with DT and Superior supplying the music. What a
    weekend!

Bernd, congrats, because if you can turn these
people on to what I and many other's here already
know, then this disc definitely must be released
in the states. Keep up the good work.

Sorry for the length but just had to pass this
story on. Oh, and one last thing, Rick and Sue,

Hey there, friendly Dream Theater fans :)

In YTSEJAM digest 1830 I saw this:

    >> Mastermind - a heavy, guitar-synth monster of a band, featuring the
    >> overamplified Marshall stacks of Bill Berends and his MIDI
    >> equipment, accompanied by driving bass and heavy Carl
    >> Palmer style drumming. An intense live experience here, I
    >> recommend the second album, Brainstorm for chops, the third
    >> album Tragic Symphony for more mature songwriting.

    >Highly reccomended. I have the first and the third. _Tragic Symphony_
    >is a great album. Above description is suffice.

Is this band the same as Dr. Mastermind? Right now I'm listening to
them, and DR Mastermind is a guitar oriented metal band, that has
at least one album called (well...) Dr. Mastermind. This also has a
song called 'The Villa', so if we're talking about the same band ....

    Hi all

I promise this post will not contain the word 'RUSH' (oh shit, another promise
    broken).

Lots of talk about 'Lemur Voice' on the Jam, so I went to my trusty CD dealer
yesterday to be told he's never heard of them (and this guy can usually get me
almost anything) and that he couldn't find them on the computer. So, is anybody
willing to dub me a copy (in trade of course) so that I can a) decide whether
I like it or not, and b) listen to it until I manage to track the album down.
    All replies gratefully received.

    stay safe and happy listening

    Pat,

Steve Morse did two Kansas albums and the one you picked up was the
second. In my opinion the first one with him is much better. It's
called Power and is generally in the bargain bin as well.

I HIGHLY recommend this book. It's of tremendous value to anyone who's a
player (and, really, to those who are not). I don't agree with/like/use ALL
the methods presented, but it's awfully good. But I've seen the book all
over the place....the minute I became aware of it, I trudged down the the
local branch library and picked up a copy. It's not too hard a book to
    find, in general.

    >stay under control like this in a live setting (this isn't to say he
    >doesn't come up with some nice surprises live; that note on UaGM that
    >he sings an octave higher is pretty cool...)

I remember, after the release of "Images and Words," talking with people
about the band, a few of whom reflected the sentiment that they thought
James LaBrie's presence in the band hurt, rather than helped. I agree with
the majority opinion, though, here -- James is a fantastic singer. I just
don't think you're gonna get everyone to agree on it. And I've been
impressed both live and on record with his performances. And I always feel
for a singer in a Prog band. If you're Geddy Lee or Roger Waters or
something, that's one thing...but to not have an instrument in your hands
during a 15 minute tune, 3 minutes of which has vocals in it....you've gotta
be inventive (or just take off -- I swear Yes sets up their shows the way
they do so everyone in the band can make a quick run to the restroom).

Incidentally, Geoff Tate is, in my opinion, the best vocal performer out
there. I haven't heard him live since the "Empire" tour, but he was still
sounding good on "Promised Land," to my ears. James makes a strong case for #2.
