    >told that dream theater is a major kickass in neo-prog. then he/she
    >sees the titles and mumbles, "what an utter piece of crap", and off
    >he (she) goes.

Most of the neo-prog and prog fans that I know are not so shallow that they
will bnlow off an album simply because of the song titles. That's sort of
like slagging a band because they cut their hair.

    -----

    >then again, he has his points. he obviously doesn't know about the
    >trigger thing portnoy was FORCED to be happy with (and, if i may add,
    >completely failed to do so). the drums do sound too clean and if you
    >use your imagination, you can think of them as machine gun bursts
    >sometimes.

That was my reaction as well. Despite Mindcrimer's past (obvious)
closed-mindedness, he did give a clear, coherent opinion on what faults he
has with DT. It certainly shocked the hell out of me! :)

    1) We've all seen the cholocate and sex thing a million times.
    2) Don't send forwards like this to the list. It wastes space, and is
absolutely the least DT-related thing you could send.
    3) At least trim the damn headers when you send stuff like this! Jeez,

Don't worry, I'm not going to try to change your mind anymore, because I realize it's closed tight. But if you insist on posting things like this, Pat, newcomers are going to think that we, the other members of the list, think it's ok to say things suck and leave their arguments at that. Remember, we're trying to *avoid* shortsightedness, ignorance, and broad generalizations, especially when there is no argument behind them.

As fans of progressive music, we more than anyone should be open to accepting the tastes and whims of others, and should most vehemently avoid telling people that their taste in music sucks.

Then again, we're talking about a Redskins fan. ;-)

I wholeheartedly agree. Prog isn't a sound, it's an attitude. And SG has that attitude. They constantly break the rules, explore new musical ground, and experiment. Any one album has a million different moods to go along with it - you can listen to Soundgarden anytime.

The downside is I've heard that they're not that good live, but I wouldn't know from personal experience. I saw them on SNL and they seemed pretty good there. But I really dig their albums. All of them.

    hi'all

I was reading through all the 'jams and suddenly some thing came to me..

was there any thread about John P's sound? I mean not what kind of delay he uses but what amount, how much chorus he uses in a specific song or wheather he uses compression with his accoustic interludes. you know like the barebone f/x from GFPM.

a non DT question....howz the new Vai???( sorry if this is an old q)

i was reading the mindcrimer....anybody thinks the person is a guitarist?

    just wondering

    Hey Carlo,

YT> I just wanted to clear up the Vinnie Moore question by letting YT>whoever asked about his new album know that his NEW album is called YT>"From Out of Nowhere" and was released a few months ago in Japan. YT>"Meltdown" came out after "Time Odyssey" and before "From Out of YT>Nowhere." I was VERY disappointed with "Meltdown" because Vinnie kind YT>of went for a more relaxed feel on this record...some blues, some YT> However, I urge any fan of progressive, classical, shred metal to YT>check out his first two called "Mind's Eye" and "Time YT>Odyssey"..(especially "The Tempest", "Race with Destiny", Into the YT>Future".....melodic splendor of the gods!!)

Thanyee, I knew it wasn't Meltdown, but I couldn't remember the anme. :) I have "Time Odissey" and it's one of the best instrumental albuns I've ever heard, Moore's melodies are amazing. "The Tempest" (that acoustic part kicks ass) and "Into the Future" (still trying to play it in that speed :) ) are my favorites. They're really incredible tunes. I've listened to some songs of the new album, and it sounds pretty much like Satch. And, as I love Satriani, I want it :)

    Fellow jammerz,

(after erasing, like, 8 messages talking about this guy)

YT>Subject: RE:Mindcrimer rips on Mike P. read and laugh. YT>>What YT>>this band should do is get the drummer to tone it down bigtime or get YT>>a new drummer, period. The rest is tolerable. If you let Petrucci YT>>write the songs and work the rest of the lyrics and music around his YT>>guitar leads combined with normal drumming, you have a winner. Now, YT>>go get your CD and listen to those four tracks. I dare you to tell me YT>>that you can't hear that machine gun.

My opinion is: well, IAW is by far my favorite DT album, and I love all the songs on it. But there's something I can't deny: Mike's playing has evolved quite a bit from IAW to Awake. I think I've never heard so good drumming as in tha album. About the machine gun in IAW: I really noticed (in Pull me Under, but never stopped to notice it in the others) that Mike does kinda a repetitive sound, including in that part he mentioned, but, what the hell, I want the song, and all the songs in IAW rock! Learning to Live is one of my favorite tunes, as Metropolis (my favorite one). This guy is a dumbass.

YT>Subject: Vinnie Moore (fwd) YT>I tried this guys personal adress and it didn't work so here's them letter YT>going to everyone. Sorry. YT>Matt B YT>To: vantin@infinity.com.br

Maybe you should try vanzin@infinity.com.br next time :P

YT> I'm a new jammer and got your post. The title of the last Moore YT>release is Meltdown and it is the most impressive albom to date. He YT>focuses on penatonics a lot more, which make his amazing sweeps and YT>picking runs all that much more impressive when they come. His tone is YT>amazing. I met him over the summer at a free guitar clinic in California. YT>He's a cool guy with a good sense of humor. Anyway, happy listening. YT>Take care and be well.

Matt, no, it's not! There's an album released this year, that is sure earlier than Meltdown. I can't remeber the name, but Moore is in the cover with his guitar. It sounds different from the others, I can say he changed from "Malmsteen-ish" (although I prefer Moore to Malmsteen) to "Satchy". It's a preety cool album, you shuold check it out. And I wish I could meet him sometime, and I wish even more that he comes around here to some shows and stuff!

    Lata.

Absolutely. Although I have some misgivings about "weak in their guitar playing" where we're talking about Steve Hackett. Clearly, Mike Rutherford isn't an awesome guitar player by any stretch....Hackett (and Darryl Steurmer, for that matter) is superior, but he was a tremendous bass player and a fine all-around musician. If you go back far enough..."Where The Sour Turns To Sweet" and "Trespass," for example, you can find some really odd-sounding stuff. Very cool.

Incidentally, I actually dug out my GTR CD after the discussion going on here about the band. I've gotta say that I forgot what a progressive pop/rock gem "When The Heart Rules The Mind" is. The rest of the record's strong, too. Not bad for a buck....

I'd recommend both "Fearless" and "Tall Blonde Helicopter" to most anyone, with one caveat -- he's really kind of a progressive folk musician. If Michael Hedges did the quirky pop think, perhaps....it isn't for a metalhead, really.

So I'm as caught up as I can be. I just skimmed through the last 10 jams or so and I have a few thoughts. bear with me, I know I'm behind. 1.So who is the real Ibanez of the ytsejam? Apparently that other guy came first, but we all know Rob. 2.Rage and 311 are rapcore, not alternative. 311 is not a one hit wonder band of the 90s because they've been around since the 80s. Their best album, Grassroots, never recieved any commercial airply. And Rage only says they use no keys because they want the people to know that all of the weird sounds come from Tom's guitar, not from a synthesizer. 3.I'm really sick of writing about Pearl Jam on here, but I will ONE MORE TIME. I think that stone and mike are really good guitarists. They don't just play barre chords, they have real songs with riffs and solos, unlike most Nirvana songs. 4.Could someone tell me how to reply from Netscape without RESENDING THE WHOLE DAMN JAM?! thank you, drive thorugh
