    Hi all

I bought the October edition of the German music magazine Metal Hammer at the
weekend, and there are a couple of reviews/reports in there that I think will
be of general interest for most Jammers:

    - a review of the album 'Behind' by Superior
    - a review of the album 'Insights' by Lemur Voice
    - a Vanden Plas gig review

So here goes (the general bollocks to follow). Bad translations by me.

    SUPERIOR
    Behind

The vocals: somewhere between Ronnie Dio and James Hetfield. The music: strong
Metallica bias, but with a light tendency towards traditional paths. Superior,
who come from Kaiserslauten and who have attracted attention since about 89 with
various demo tapes, have now released their debut album BEHIND. The press info
says it is "hard, progressive rock music" with texts about "personal reflections
and contemporary themes", but fails to mention the wonderful piano parts, which
allow tracks such as "WHY" to develop fully. The feel of the production:
polished, with a transparent sound and a strong rhythm section (we all know the
Roko Soundstudio). In addition, the rhythmically inventive guitar duo of
Michael Mueller and Bernd Basmer provides support for the melodic singing of the
band's shouter Micael Tangermann. A successful debut.
    Rating 5/7

    LEMUR VOICE

    Insights

This is Holland's progressive hope Lemur Voice with their debut, which is
surprisingly on Roadrunner Records. Until now the band distributed their complex
song structures under the name Aura, but changed the name to avoid confusion
with other bands that have the same name. INSIGHTS contains all of the things
that fans of Rush, Saga or Fates Warning especially value: unusual guitar
harmonies, chopped rhythms, broadside keyboard attacks, and melodies which
seek their salvation in artistic freedom far beyond the flair of hit parades.
You sometimes miss the hook line (Akasha Chronicles), but then later you are
more than compensated by the excellent ability of their shouter Gregoor van
der Loo (Prime of Passion). Truely successful.
    Rating 5/7

Vanden Plas gig report (only the bit about Vanden Plas)

Vanden Plas proved themselves to be worthy headliners: it's true that the front
man Andy Kuntz borrows strongly from a certain gentleman called James LaBrie,
but the professionalism and engagement with which the boys put across their
prog-metal message is extremely impressive, especially lead guitarist Stephan
Gill, who plays his riffs almost as coolly and relaxed as Criss Oliva (RIP)
at the peak of his career.

You may be surprised by the ratings of the albums (I would have given Lemur
Voice a 6), but don't forget, this is a magazine whose album of the month
is 'Test For Echo' by Rush (7/7): no accounting for taste, I suppose.

Talking of Lemur Voice (we all seem to be at the monemt), I received a dub copy
of INSIGHTS on Friday, and I've been playing it almost nonstop since (I even
stopped listening to Sieges Even). These Dutch guys have got to be the best
thing that I've heard this year, and there have been a lot of brilliant
releases so far. This album out-DTs Dream Theater in my opinion. The singer
is a lot more acceptable to my ears than James LaBrie - he doesn't sound like
he's in danger of rupturing himself any second. My favourite track is, without
doubt, the instrumental 'Akasha Chronicles'. I first heard it in the car on the
way into town, and as the track progressed (no pun intended), the grin on my
face just got wider and wider, and my streering wheel drum kit took an
unusually hard battering. Now all I've got to do is find a CD dealer who can
order the thing for me (don't worry Marcel, you'll get your royalties. You mighteven get rich: I've copied the tape for my girlfriend and a mate of mine, and
they have both asked me to order copies of the CD for them too). Please come
to Germany (with Superior and Vanden Plas).

    stay safe and happy listening

                 vocals)

    Greets,
I wouldn't worry about Mindcrimer and his baseless rantings. He
(or she) obviously doesn't understand DT or music for that matter.
Portnoy's writings and performances are over his head, which appears
to be up his ass anyway. Enough said there.

I picked up Lemur Voice this weekend-WOW. If you can get this get
it. These guys are very deep in their writing and playing. Vocals are
good but hard to understand as enunciation isn't quite what it should
be. But then, they're Dutch and English isn't their mother tongue.
(No comments. please). This is another band where the drummer writes
all the lyrics. Is there a pattern here? There are those that joke
about drummers not being musically inclined. But it seems like the
bands we enjoy the most not only keep the complicated rhythm going
but have the brains to write matching lyrics as well. No, I'm not a
drummer. Anyway, this is a must have for all prog fans. I think
Superior's Behind is easily the best album of '96-Lemur Voice could
    easily be the 2nd.

And is it just me but does Clockwork's WWOT keep getting better and
better every time you hear it? (for those of you lucky enough to have
    it)

I finally started getting the jams again. Don't know why they
stopped. I still can't get through to Skadz though. Anyone else have
    this problem?

    Later,
    Wilmo

Hi all! I am a long time Rush fan (if you count 9 years as a long
time) and fairly short time DT fan (known of them since I&W). I am
however a Internet virgin, this is my first experience with any mail
list, so I hope this goes through! I would never have thought that
there is such an easy way to gain access to information on one of my
favorite bands! Like the initial message I received said, being on
this list is a privilege! I only hope I can contribute worthwhile
editorial content, and maybe a few pieces of trivia that everyone
doesn't already know! I actually live about 20 minutes from where I&W
was recorded (suffern, NY), and someday hope to possibly record an
album there, It seemed to work well for DT! :-) I also hope to garner
info about music schools, I am a self taught guitarist who wishes
that I knew more about all facets of music, I figure that many of the
people who appreciate DT's compositions and post here are well trained
musicians who know much more than me about schooling, and the
industry. I won't waste any more space this time, but hope to post
often and give as much as I get!

         Later

Come on! Get off this heresy. If Green Day ever covered a DT song it
would suck, that is just because Green Day sucks. Just thinking about it
    is making me ill.

This is all my opinion so if you like Green Day then that is your
    problem, er choice...

Yeah, okay, so it's Lifting Shadows off a Dream. My first thought was
the beginning of Scarred, and I went with that. Now that I think of it,
it has got to be LSoaD.

         Hey everybody,

My ISP was purchased by another company so now I am forced to change
the location of my web pages. Please update any links that you may
have. The Song Book has not changed, simply moved.

         Thanks,

The Dream Theater "Unofficial" Song Book is a complete listing of all Dream
Theater lyrics (Official releases, singles, EPs, cover tunes, the Kevin
Moore demos, etc.). It is available via the following methods:

    WWW: http://www.goodnet.com/~mkizer/dt/dt.htm
    FTP: www.goodnet.com/~mkizer/dt/dt_sb13.txt

Email from the Ytsejam Mailing List Archive send:
        get ytsejam dt_songbook
    Address it to: ytsejam-request@ax.com
    with a subject of: asdf

If you wish to include links from your web pages, the name of the actual
song book file changes with each revision (but I'll let everybody know when
that happens). The WWW address for my Dream Theater page will not change (so
    that's a safe one).

         Hey guys,

I was updating my web pages to point to the new UBL
(http://www.ubl.com) card for DT and saw that it is badly out of date.
It still had the old arastar address for the Ytsejam (I fixed that),
but most of the links were pretty out of date. The FAQ and Lifting
Shadows were two that I noticed right off the bat. Anyone that has a
DT related web page, might want to go there and update the info. You
can get right to the DT card via my DT web page at:
            http://www.goodnet.com/~mkizer/dt/dt.htm

         Later,
         ~Mike

I disagree with this. I believe Soundgarden is the most technocal and
the closest thing to progressiv rock thet grunge has to offer. I was
just listening to the new 'Garden stuff yesterday (on the way back
from killing my legs on the John Muir trails in Wisconsin's Kettle
Morian--OOCH!!)... I think these guys have the best command of their
instruments and of composition. Their use of time-sigs (one of them
was a very raw 9/8), chord structure, etc. really sets them apart from
the rest of the group. I do agree that Pearl Jam is very close.

The "leaders" of the genre, Nirvana, were as far away from that as
possible. Boring, easy, garage band crap.

I have yet to pick up the new Vai and I hear he does his own singing
on this one. I hope he sings better than Satch. Man, that guys NEEDS
         to stick with guitar!
