I got Lemur Voice 2 days ago and I immediately thought that the singer
(Gregoor?) sounds like Sting. Glad I am not the only one. :) I only
listened to it twice so far but what stood out was the 3rd song (can't
    remember the name) sorry Marcel.

I am curious if anyone on the list is in to a guitarist named Joe
Stump? I attended a summer program at Berklee this year and was honered to
have him as a teacher. <<

I heard a few of his tracks and was stunned by his sheer speed. But under all
that technique was little else. If he came out 6-7 years ago, hhe probably
would have been up there with Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, Tony MacAlpine and Vinnie
Moore as one of the Shred Masters. I think the era of shred guitar has passed
(unfortunately). He doesn't seem to have the "tunes" under all those notes
like that other guys I mentioned.

Guys like Stone Gossard and Kurt Cobain are being praised as innovators now...

I made that mistake once... a teacher, Toshi Iseda, in Chicago was
going around advertising everywhere. He had all these credentials,
and sounded like hot shit. His lessons were $35 an hour for two
pages of "scales we all know" and 59 minutes of bullshitting.
Further he's an asshole, and screwed me out of $200... but I'm not
    biased. :)

Understatement of the decade! Stump is an Yngwie wannabe. He used
to walk around Boston in those fluffy shirts with the lace and shit.
You know... the way Yngwie dressed on stage in the 80's? He teaches
at Berklee... and he's a wanker.

He is fast.... very fast.... but not alive... you know? Heh... my
buddy (who goes to Berkle) was making fun of him at a Berklee
concert. It's hilarious. The dude started acting all tough...
ahh... how can you be intimidated by someone wearing a woman's

That wasn't intended as a flame, but it should have been. It's real
easy to get into "holier than thou" mode when you don't know the
uncontrolable influences that may affect someone. It was not fair of
me to call that weakness. I have just known a few people who've
committed suicide, and they were not victims of any mental
affliction... they just got into drugs and alcohol, and brought their
problems upon themselves. So I disassociate myself from them... and
I don't feel bad for them. That's just how I deal with it at times.
I don't feel bad when someone is sick because of drugs, or dies from
chronic alcoholism, outside of the fact that the person wasted
his/her life away. It's just... if you know it's going to hurt
you... what could POSSIBLY mind fuck you into doing drugs?

But I owe you an apology, Andy. That was not right of me to say. It
is for too broad a statement, and too cold a rule to judge by. I
just didn't take very much into account when saying it.

            An outstanding record!

I bought that in 1973 and still listen to it to this day. It
has always reminded me of Klaus and crew meet Black Sabbath (because
of the guitar sound being much like Iommi's circa 1974).
In search of the piece of mind is one of my favorite songs of
all time. It truly moves me to hear it.
If ever there was a "bic lighter" song at a concert, that's
the one along with We'll Burn the Sky from Tokyo Tapes.
Any jammers who like straight ahead "in your face" 70s hard
rock/metal should try to pick up Tokyo Tapes. Some of guitar playing
bu Uli Roth is absolutley brilliant and the songs just smoke, unlike
the most recent Scorps record Pure Instinct which I feel has about 5
    ballads too many.

            That's correct.

As I understand it, Ingo Schwictenberg had numerous substance
abuse problems which forced band leader Michael Weikath to ask him to
leave until he had completed a succesful period in rehab.
When his rehab had been completed, he approached Weiki and was
told that he could not re-enter the band as they were changing their
sound and were happy with the new drummer.
Despondent and depressed, Ingo walked in front of a freight
train one morning not far from his home in Germany.
A very sad tale of the industry gone wrong. :(

    Cheers,

i'm with you, andrew. suicide is not weak. actually, it takes a lot
of courage to go through with it. it's tragic. it's a shame.
whether you sympathize with someone who commits suicide or not,

I happen to like Rage,, musically. They do the purpose of most alternative
bands, express anger in their music and lyrics, whatever those lyrics may
be.Musically, Rage is good. 311 even has some catchy tunes and I think
they're above average. But my original question remains unanswered. What is
so good about limitted yourself to a guitar-based band?

Not much of a change between Bill Bruford and Alan White? Surely you Gest.
Bill and Alan have two completely different drum styles. Bill's is more
jazzy, Alan's more rock-oriented. To say this is not much of a change is like
saying Kevin more leaving and Geddy Lee taking over keyboards slot is a minor
    adjustment.

Nah, on second thought, the song must be about me and my sinus
problems. I haven't been able to breathe through my nose for the past
couple days. Thank God for typing so it's not hard to understand me :).
Just saw Fleming & John tonight @ The SIde Door in St. Louis. Man,
these guys (and gal) rip. They did this thing where they took "I Got
You, Babe" (yeah, the Sonny & Cher tune) and sung it to the tune of
"Black Dog." It kicked some major tail. They are really tight. Nah,
they're not really prog (they're progressive in a way, but not like DT
or Rush). The vocals remind me of a very operatic Tori Amos on the
softer stuff (Fleming sings a bit higher, though - she's a high
soprano), and she can wail with the best of them (besides, she's rather
easy on the eyes :). The first time I saw them, they also did a keen
cover of "Back in Black" (only AC/DC song I sort of like, sounded MUCH
    better with real singing).
The St. Louis paper had an article the other day about the Tull/ELP
show with a really cool picture of the dude on keys, and a positive
review at that (I guess there are some prog fans around here after all
    (besides the jammers, of course).

I must say that I am a bit disappointed with the simpler Neil, but if you
really listen to the drumming on tEst for Echo, it's not as easy as it may
sound. Listen to the drums carefully. Yes, he's not going lightning fast,
which is disappointing, but the drumming sounds like it has complexity to it
in parts. And there are a few Peart moments. I hope he doesn't mess with
anything on tour and he shreds those drums like the Neil of old.

In all the time i've been reading the jam i've seen plenty about other
prog style bands but never anything about a great(but now defunct)
band called IT BITES , they put out three great albums that will
appeal to some jammers if you have not heard them before your missing
    some great music.

Buy their albums now ......1. Big Lad in the Windmill
                               2. All Around the World
                               3. Eat me in St.Louis

He'd been having drink/drug problems towards the end of his career with Helloween. He tried to get himself cleaned up, but by the time he'd done that he found he'd already been kicked out. He got depressed and jumped in front of a train. Presumably the drink and drugs were his own fault, but it seems that being kicked out was the last straw.

I know, it's a sad story. The story surrounding Michael Kiske's departure is also bad, but not as bad as that.
