I was wondering if anyone can confirm the existence of a CD-ROM version of
Rush's TFE in the US? Rumours say that it exists, someone at a record company
here says it does also, but to date, I have not seen a copy, anybody mention it,
or what is supposed to be on it if it does exists!

Anybody shed some light on it???????????????

    Thanks,

I like Matt Cameron's drumming and think Soundgarden is super; but one
thing that bugs me is that "trash can lid CLANK" sound he has for his
    snare on superunknown.

Also, I think the key to any type of music being praised, technical or
simple, is the emotional level of the band. Now, I'm not saying that all
bands need to be crying or screeming about how much the world sucks, one
can just tell if a band consists of "true musicians" or not. True
musicians put their heart into there work, and it shows........

Ok, I've said it, I'll get down from the soapbox now.

In my last post I mentioned my monthly "Most Frequent Poster List" :

    > If you want the list to have a link to your homepage, just put an
    > "URL:<your_homepage>" in the next message you send to the mailinglist :
    >
    > URL:http://www.globalxs.nl/home/b/bredius/

I realized not many people will actually use this option, so I decided
to make some changes in the program I wrote to create this list...
*ANY* URL you mention in your message(s) will make it to the next
"Most Frequent Post List" (that is, the *last* one you mentioned).

An "URL:<your_homepage>" line, anywhere in your message(s) (at the very
beginning of a line) will *ALWAYS* take precedence over any other URL.
Again, only the last one mentioned will make it to the list. When you
mention your homepage *this* way, the link will be displayed as BOLD.

If you don't have a homepage of your own, you can also use it as a way
to advertise your favourite site (or someone else's homepage).

Originally, the list will display your name or email-address...
You can change this to the name of your homepage (or whatever) with :

    NAME:<the_name_of_your_homepage_(or_whatever)>

I really want the "Most Frequent Poster List" to be a cool place that
Jammers can use to visit eachother's homepages and e-mail other Jammers.

Let me know what you think by signing my guestbook :-)

    Mark

Hello from nice, cool Annapolis, MD. - where
the Navy is king, but act more like queens...

First of all, let me ask you, the reader, a question...
Where in the hell do get so much *time* to post
*so many* damn messages? I wish I had that
    much time.

Secondly, someone get Dreamnday some tech
support before he loses his mind.

Thirdly, (this *is* getting old) I have received
(like they were *free* or something) some
new cds. Among them you could find, if you
were to look (fuck off mr. conditional tense),
Rush, Steve Vai, Mercyful Fate, Eric Johnson,
Y&T, old King Diamond, and more. Yes, I
spend quite a bit of my income on music. Anyway,
since most of you have read numerous reviews of the
majority of the aforementioned cds, I shall not
bore you further. But, I would like to recommend
the "new" Y&T disc, "Musically Incorrect." It is
a very solid record by a very solid band.
Some people might call them a bit of a chameleon
band, because to have been around since the
early 70's, one has to be...Considering they managed
to put out competent mid-80's hair rock, and retain
their dignity, they do quite well with the more raw
(but not grunge, mind you) rock sound of the
90's (which is but a regression to the album rock style
of the 70's, by way of 90's technology) and still retain
    a signature sound.

Someone asked about which record to get of various bands.
    Mercyful Fate - Melissa
Fates Warning - Parallels (if more prog-metal is desired, go with
    Perfect Symmetry)
King Diamond - Them or maybe Abigail, both of which rage in
their musicianship, but Them is probably "cleaner" with regard
to sound density and precision, while Abigail's story is a bit
    better.
Helloween - Time of the Oath, I guess, for that German Power
Metal vibe. Keepers Two for better vocals, and a little more
focus, but, on the other hand, K2 has a few silly songs.

I think perhaps this is long enough, and my title was quite apt.

I like the slightly heavier vibe of the new Rush (first couple of
tracks - which is all I have had a chance to listen to so far.

My take on the latest of the Dream Theater/Queensryche thing:

Y'know, Fates Warning has had a similar problem with this whole Queensryche comparison thing....in fact, they've had it worse, being constantly accused of being derivitive of Queensryche, which never really made much sense to me. We've got a couple of distinct bands here mining similar turf. This is not news.

At any rate, I'm one of those people who happens to like both bands. A lot. I wouldn't say that "Promised Land" really represented a massive falling off, though I agree with the folks who like "Empire" a little better. Also, "The Warning" and the first EP have a LOT of musical integrity...but the folks who've pointed out that they LOOK a little incongruous with those musical stylings are probably right. Remember, though, that the same sort of accusations tend to get fired off at Dream Theater....I prefer to ignore image where I can (that doesn't really work for, say, Kiss) and concentrate on the music.

Interestingly enough, this all relates a little to the whole alternative debate. I was in a band long ago....in LA, of all places. Laden with bands for whom image was the whole thing. Still, it was probably superior to what I remember Alternative music being (Depeche Mode, The Cure, Yaz). At any rate, I wasn't really listening to any of that stuff so much. But playing in an aggressive band that WASN'T hung up on image was odd -- we'd play bills with the odd glam band, punk band, or thrash band. I remember when I first heard bands like Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone, and Living Colour. This was exciting shit -- there were finally bands out there playing aggressive music that WEREN'T hung up on image...it was about musicianship and songwriting. That was seriously appealing to me. Playing in a band that didn't look like a bunch of tarts was suddenly acceptable...and there were other band like us, even if they were listening to Bad Religion and Faith No More (both of whom I really dig), rather than Rush, Zeppelin, and Floyd. For a couple of years, Alternative music helped create a really interesting musical landscape in LA. And brought a moderately progressive band closer to success that in any other environment.

So, returning to the main thrust of this little monologue, both bands have provided a lot of people with a fair amount of musical enjoyment, along with, in many cases, access to a musical community of like-minded folk. I don't mind this bashing around of the relative merits of both bands -- I think that kind of dialogue gets us all going in a good direction. But my take on this is that both bands are flying miles above the flight patterns most of the musical world is stuck in.

    Hiya Ytsekiddies,

I am pondering buy a new bass, again, and am tempted to delve into the 6 string world. I am looking for something with a similar feel to the Fender Jazz (Mexican) bass of the 80's, as all of my basses have the same style of body and pick-ups etc. Any help would be greatlt appreciated, please email don't waste Jamwidth (unless its oh so worth it).

Yeah, I've just read that interview so many times and laughed I memorized it. Funny.

    anyways...

As far as people saying "so and so band sucks" I think there is a place where you have to draw a line between what is good music, and what is opinion. I can't believe I live in a world where Green Day is rich and masters like Eric Johnson have recognition pretty much only within the guitar playing community. His playing is so pure and wonderful, it goes right to the soul. That is good music and (to be frank) looking at it from all angles, anybody who says it ain't is a fool...IMHO of course :)
