Hey, I finally got to see my ticket for the St. Louis Rush show, and,
guess what, they're something like 12th row. WOO HOO!!!!! Well, it may
not be exactly 12th, but the dude who had them, said it should be
somewhere close to that (the guys in front of the dudes who picked the
tix up got 8th row, so it should at least be close :). GONNA KICK SOME

Greetings, Jammers! Well, this is my first post to the list (although I've
been on the jam for over a month now), so I though I'd take the time for a
    little introduction.

I've been a fan of DT's music for almost 2 years now. I had heard PMU under
a couple of times, but I didn't think much of it at the time. Then one day
I saw the video for Lie and was blown away by the heaviness of the song
and the burning guitar solo by JP, so I decided to buy Awake. Needless to
say, I was hooked, and DT are now one of my favorite bands, second only to
    Van Halen.

I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that I absolutely cannot wait for the next
album. The 3 CDs I have now just aren't enough (I haven't even *seen* LATM
or WDADU. In fact, I've had to order my CDs from Columbia House because the
record store here doesn't carry anything besides alterna-crap, country, and
a bit of rock/pop. Hopefully I'll be able to find those albums someday). I'm
also anxious to see if Metropolis II will be on the album. Sounds like it's
    a really amazing song.

Anyway, I wanted to respond to this:

    > ding ding
    > dong ding
    > ding
    >
    >
    >
    > dee dee
    >boo doo boo boo (repeat)

LSOAD, right? I was reading it wrong at first. I thought it was L-R on top
and then L-R on bottom, but as soon as I read it right I got it. :)
    How 'bout this one:

                                       dee
                                          dee
dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee dee
       dee dee dee dee dee

    doo doo
       doo doo
                   doo
                       doo

I think that's right. Have fun with it :) Shouldn't be too hard, actually.
Just keep in mind that it goes L-R on the top couple of lines and the same
    on the bottom.

    Jeff

I just got unhappy news from fellow jammer John Nguyen, he has told me
that since his father just lost his current job and for other money
realted reasons that he will not be able to come to the ytse-con next
month, we to say the least this puts a little of a slant on things.
Here's the deal, this is really one place (NYC) I will not drive to
myself, yeah if I had two people going with me I might but not now.
Unless I can get a group of people to head up with *cough* *cough*
*ibanez* this is a trip I will not be able to make, if anyone can help out
please e-mail me and we will discuss it. Thanks... andy.

Oh BTW, I just scored 28th row to the first show of the Rush tour in
Albany, New York.... a whole hour and a half after tickets went on sale
    :)

Also if anyone has any information on STILL tour dates please contact
me... this is also very important. The were scheduled to play 21 mile
from my house so this could be a very good situation.

Remember, the stuff I wrote was my opinion and the reason I posted what I
did was just that I have become sick of all the crap that is now on this list
since school got back in session. And talking about Green Day doing a DT song
is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Sure I am close minded. I hate the popular music of today. Most of the
music on radio and MTV today, I can't stand.
    My reasons being:
    1. the music is boring
    2. the lyrics are boring
    3. it is just boring
    4. the majority sound the same

I dont know if this is argumentative enough for you or not.

I was just scanning through ytsejam digest #1854 and I saw that someone,
adam barnhart, mentioned Menudo. This past 4th of July, I blew up an old
menudo record that my mother gave to me before I could talk. "Like a
Cannonball" HEE HEE HEE. One M-80 did the trick:-)
I also would like to back up what someone wrote about Geoff Tate taking
the blue ribbon in the vocals department. (Even over our beloved JL) I
happened to see some of Queensryche Live and GT was absolutely flawless.
He was right on key every song. He knew when to scream and when to sing
soft. He was awesome. I have a bunch of live DT and the only draw back
would be the vocals. JL was screaming 70% of the time and was off key
about 45-50% of the time. JL is unreal in the studio but live, he has a
lot to learn from GT. I know I'm going to get a bunch of hate letters
for saying what I did. But, don't misunderstand me. DT is my all time
favorite band. Why else would I have most of there old CD's and
bootlegs? I have to go. Later!!!!

The way MP explained it is that they were going to ask Derek to play one or two tracks, and he was going to be cool with it, and then they wound up not asking him to, for whatever reason, so they thanked Derek again for his patience. Or something. :)

I listened to most of it and taped all of it. I think the highlight would have to be one of our fellow Jammers getting through and asking a question. :) Matt from Barrington, RI, get on up here and tell us your story.

Of course, other than DblAgnt, most of the questions sucked big time. I don't know about you, but I think that anytime there's a call-in show like that, or a concert ticket giveaway over the radio, or anything like that, the caller ought to be asked a grueling series of trivia questions, so that we *know* they're not just going to re-hash the FAQ. Like, for instance:

    1) Who played electric violin on "Losing It"? 2) What color was Caress of Steel supposed to be? 3) Who was Rush's first drummer, and what is he doing these days?

Right there, you've eliminated a whole host of dumb questions. Of course, you time people on their answers. Anyone that comes up with Ben Mink within five seconds gets to ask anything they want. :)

    Of course, that's all IMHO.

BTW, John Rutsey is somehow involved in professional weightlifting. :)

my last posts dealt with fire garden, and how Vai's voice 'reduced' it to only the best album of the year.....i don't think that means i hate or am downing his vocals, just that the instrumentals were so smokin' on side one, it was a bit of a letdown when he toned 'em down to add vocals on the other side.....

DT thought: saw and corrected my first THEATRE placard in a record store yesterday......

AC/DC thought: went to football game/monsoon Saturday, am now suffereing from a cold and a sore throat....on the plus side, I can now do a dead-on karaoke version of Back in Black.....Can't nail Bon Scott's vocals tho, that's another plane of existance.....

More DT thought: it's one that i bring up periodically, so bear with me if you've seen it before....methinks Pearl Jam has gone down in the three albums since "10", and i know I'm not alone....me-also-thinks that I&W is tied for best album ever (with U2 joshua tree and Pete Gabriel So), and that awake was a bit of a let down, and I was just wondering, is it HEALTHY to really like an early album by a band and then compare the rest of its work to that single piece of work??

Or, as with rush, once there's enough DT material out there, will I and we be able to separate DT into different phases, and enjoy each on its own merits...........

DT opinion: Mr. Sherinian will never be the force that Kevmo was in DT on I&W, thereby reducing keys to support status, rather than co-lead instrument forever in DT.......

Yeah, Nitro was about the most outrageous band you'd ever hear. They were just so over the top. It SOUNDED like a good idea, but they just weren't much of a band. Jim Gillette sounded like that Mariah Carey dolphin whistle at least once a verse (he covered more ground in a verse than you'd hear in a whole Watchtower tune). And Michael Angelo played about a million miles an hour. He's light speed, like Chris Impelliteri. So I'd just echo what was said above. And if you get the chance at a used record store, pop in "OFR" in one of the test players and listen to it for a minute....I promise it'll be worth listening to (but I'm not sure I'd get the CD even if it was free).

Oh well... just thought I'd >share.

My understanding, as I've heard it from a bunch of folks, is that Mike Varney is something of a greedy bastard. I don't KNOW that, so I'm not going to try to support that argument. What I'm willing to say is this: there are a TON of musicians out there who, with a little publicity, can move between 10,000 and 50,000 units of a record. And Geffen can't get them to sell too many more. What Mike Varney did (and what more people should do), is target that market and make records for less than $100,000. That's not dumb. Artistically, it would have been nice if Greg Howe had more time in the studio. Realistically, that ain't gonna happen unless he buys an ADAT and sets up shop at home (a viable alternative NOW, to be sure....a little less viable in 1989). I don't know what Varney did from a production standpoint....I know, though, that Greg Howe doesn't sound like Vinnie Moore doesn't sound like Tony MacAlpine doesn't sound like Marty Friedman. Not from a songwriting standpoint, anyhow. From a production standpoint, a LOT of those Shrapnel records sound very similar.... enough so that I can see the argument.

On the other hand, Magna Carta seems to be doing the same sort of thing with progressive music....about the same thing Metal Blade has done in going out and getting Iron Maiden and the Galactic Cowboys. This is not dumb. If Varney's really mucking around with the foundation of the bands' writing, he's making a mistake. It's far better to offer a more diverse set of bands than to offer the same one a hundred times. But I don't think Shadow Gallery sounds much like Magellan or Cairo. So, again, I'm not sure whether I want to point the finger at Mike Varney at this point. I AM wary, though.

this is no substitute. this is the real thing.

the term "musical talent" doesn't mean you can play your instrument. in that case, drum machines would be the most talented drummers around.

it means you can write music that pleases you and hopefully somebody else too. i think green day are a bunch of pseudo-punks who are talented enough to write those catchy tunes you don't like. hell, it's very difficult to write a driving 3-minute popsong using only those three chords. that's why i respect them. they know what they want to do and they're good at it. they know their limits.

it's an extremely dangerous attitude to think that only prog qualifies as "good" music, or that it's the only reasonable music form. i've seen the tendency on the jam quite often and i'm very afraid.

p.s. i don't like green day, nor do i listen to their music. i just respect them for being what they wanna be, no more, no less.
