I was wondering how security is there since I haven't ever been there
before. I was going to try to tape the show with my D8 and Cores if
    security isn't too tight.

Since no-one has commented on Frederico's request for suggestion about TIAMAT I'll have a go.

TIAMAT are a Scandinavian death metal band gone good. Their first releases are pretty much in the death camp (Astral Sleep, Clouds, Sleeping Beauty-Live in Israel). Some use of atmosphere keys and some cool song construction. Vocals are grind style and lyrics deal with typical death metal topics (some satanic stuff). With the release of Wildhoney in 1995 (on Century Media) the line-up has changed and the TIAMAT sound is still there but has been moved into an awesome plane. TIAMAT is now in the death/doom-prog category and could be compared to heavy metal-Pink Floyd. Songs are long and usually slow (doom) with rich keys, excellent guitar work and amazing construction. There are many instrumental pieces on the CD and most form short to intermediate bridges between songs. Vocals are harsh but not really grind and the lyrics are far more interesting and compelling. As you can tell I am very impressed with the development of this band and I recommend Wildhoney to anyone who likes intelligent, melodic and atmospheric death or doom.

    Sorry, no DTC.

This is a real problem I have, too. No, I don't think it's healthy, and yet I do it to all the bands I love. Operation:Mindcrime was my introduction to Queensryche, and nothing has compared since. Van Halen's first was my introduction to VH, and nothing has compared except for 5150, after which nothing from the Sammy era has compared with that. I agree with you about Pearl Jam: Ten was their peak. And, like you, I&W is simply a masterpiece to me that will be nearly impossible to top (it is still numero uno in my car tape deck three years after I got it, whereas Awake only lasted about 3 months).

I hate myself for doing this. I wish I could judge each album based on its own merits. But no matter how hard I try, I can't do it. The closest I can come is to not even think about the next album, and try not to get psyched about it. By keeping my expectations low (or even nonexistant), then I can kind of treat a new album like a separate entity. Usually doesn't work, though. =)

    > >Or, as with rush, once there's enough DT material out there, will I and we >be able to separate DT into different phases, and enjoy each on its own >merits...........

I hope this is the case, but Rush is kind of a different beast with me because I got into them relatively late. Going and buying 3 or 4 old Rush albums at once in order to add to my collection, and then listening to each several times and deciding which ones I really like, is quite a bit different then listening to a latest release for months on end until a new one comes out. So I now can think of about a half-dozen Rush albums that I think are tops (including my first one, Presto), but I still have the same problem: none of their recent ones have stood up to these old faves.

    > >DT opinion: Mr. Sherinian will never be the force that Kevmo was in DT >on I&W, thereby reducing keys to support status, rather than co-lead >instrument forever in DT.......

You're a brave man. Get ready for all the "get over it, Kev's gone, Derek is DT's choice, they'll be awesome!!!" posts. But you know what? I'm brave, too, and I'm going to agree with you. Kevin was one of the strongest songwriters in the group, and as a result he couldn't help but take the keyboard to a prominent role in many of the songs. While I don't doubt Derek's ability as a keyboard player, I don't think Kevin's abilities as a songwriter can be replaced so easily. I, too, predict that we will see less prevalence of the keyboards, at least initially, until Derek is more comfortable with providing and following through with his own musical ideas as Kevin obviously was.

While I'm on the subject, excuse me while I go on a tangent about my favorite keyboard player. IMVHO, Kevin Moore is one of a kind. From what little I have seen (ok, just LiT =), Kev seems to me to be a jerk. He has an attitude. But damn if some of the world's best artists haven't had an attitude, and I think KevMo is no exception. Not only that, but that attitude comes across so well in both his keyboard playing and his songwriting. My favorite DT song of all time is still Only a Matter of Time, and in fact I always think of WDADU as the high point of Kev's musical career, simply because by listening to his music on that disc, I somehow get the impression that he was happy during this time (am I the only one who hears the second strain in OaMoT, and always sees a young Kevin Moore, full of dreams of making it big in music, practicing a keyboard in his bedroom? <"In a dimly lit room with a stool as his stage...">).

Likewise, when he's feeling melancholy we get Wait for Sleep, when he's feeling spiritual we get Surrounded, when he's feeling frustrated we get 6:00, and when he's feeling depressed we get Space Dye Vest. Kevin wears his heart on his sleeve, and nobody plays keyboard with his sleeve like Kevin Moore does. The result is simply a work of art.

I think it was this same honesty he has with his music that caused him to realize he didn't like where he was going and to change musical directions. This one decision has made me sad, frustrated, and upset, but at the same time makes me respect and admire him even more (which in turn makes me even more upset that he's no longer in my favorite band =).

Sadly, these opinions of mine, coupled with the problem I mentioned above about not being able to judge a new work without comparing it to past ones, probably means that Derek Sherinian is in a no-win situation with me. I'm going to do my best to see that doesn't happen, but it's not looking good at this point (the one shot at songwriting for DT we have seen from him is, IMO, inferior to the original DT material it replaced. Namely, the changes to the middle of ACOS and his ensuing keyboard solo just don't compare to one of my all-time-favorite Dream Theater moments (yep, I've got some too, Mike Bahr =), which is the intense keyboard/guitar/double-bass sixteenth note extravaganza about 17:00 minutes into the old version of ACOS (sometimes commonly referred to as the neoclassical section)).

Anyway, enough of my rambling. I'm really sorry about the length, I had intended to only write brief replies to Partha's comments, really I was. =) Tell ya what, I'll leave out my sig for punishment, k?

I've ordered Lemur Voice's "Insights" yesterday, before it's even released (here in Belgium), or at least they don't have in the stores yet. I have no idea what to expect, so I rely on the good taste of you guys :)

*but now for something completely different* Don't you guys love DT's album artwork ? I've been thinking about the drawing/picture on the cover of the IAW cd. This is what I've come up with. Ok, so there is a burning heart, which is explained in the FAQ. The Majesty symbol is clear also. The rest is IMO: Bed --> Wait for sleep Moon --> Under a glass moon (moon is behind window, or 'glass': "under a glass moonlight") OR --> Wait for sleep ("standing by the _window_, eyes upon the _moon_", co=EFncidence ?) Bird --> Pull me under ("watch the sparrow falling") Mirror --> Surrounded ("by a candle stands a mirror": burning heart might equal candle (???)) =20 Then on the Awake cover I've made an interesting link: remember the old greek statue ? In "Voices" it says '...the old man takes the poison...'. This is, IMO a reference to Socrate, who was forced to drain the poisonous cup. After all, the whole song has some sort of religious-antique atmosphere. Again, co=EFncidence ? Other opinions/ideas ?

Some one responded to my review of "Working Man" by asking what band Deen comes from. Well, he is probably most famous for his work with the band Bad English, who had a big hit in the late 80s called "When I See You Smile." But the best work I've heard him do (besides on "Working Man") is on the only album put out by Hardline called "Double Eclipse." You should still be able to find it in some of your better record stores. He absolutely rips it up on this album. Actually, the band itself is one of the best hard rock bands I've ever heard and features Journey's very own Neal Schon on guitar. Great stuff. Oh, and I think Deen played on the last Ozzy album too.

Well, I found the Rush tribute album. Let's just say that I was impressed. This has to be the truest tribute album I've ever heaard. Those Eagles ones and stuff don't hold the enthusiasm that these guys show for their bands. My only disappointment is in the production sound. I realize this must have been a low-budget thing, or that they were trying to reproduce the original 70's Rush sound, but I really hate the lo-fi thing. My fav tracks are Mission (Eric Martin's vox are great!) Closer to the Heart (Fates will always rule!) YYZ (is that the same James Murphy from Testament?!? Wowser, I never would have thought...), La Villa Strangiato (Yes!), and Red Barchetta (James does an excellent job!) Don't falme me please when I say the Mike sort of does drown the songs (I think this is a mix glitch) with the drumming, but it is very intense!

Also, I bought the latest Eric Johnson CD today as I heard people recommending it. Add my recommendations to that list, it's a great album! (Venus Isle)
