Not funny. Immagine I'm chasing you with one of Yngwie's guitars,
intending to use it as a club. Granted, you don't know what I look like,
but won't that be even more frightening. Later, Joker-extraordinare.

    Fellow Jammers,

Just a couple of quickies. First, a note of congrats to Matt Masi
for getting on Rockline with Rush. What a "Rush" that must have been
(damn I hate it when bad puns sneak in...). Your question
was intelligent and pertinent. Secondly, I also play
an Ibanez. John's picture on the little tag made me do it I swear!
Lastly, when is the IRC thing happening? I'm usually on around 10 pm
to 2 am Pacific Time and I can't ever find the channel. What servers
do you guys use? Supra-lastily, is the Rush tribute album coming out
any time soon? Is it already out? Has this been gone over for years
    on the Jam? Later.

    Glenn

p.s. (you knew it had to come...) I don't know what those of you who
like the new EJ disc hear in it. I must be missing something quite
dreadfully because I just find it boring. Even the fast deedlee
    deedlee shit...

did i miss it or has no one mentioned the cover art on working man? I've
had it for quite a while, but it hadn't occured to me that the cover is
kinda strange. What's the deal? does it have any meaning? I have only 1
rush album so I'm not very rush-educated.

Why do you suppose that DT started using fade-outs on I&W. I am very happy
with the fact that they had none on WDADU. I personally don't like them
and usually attribute them to the inability to write a decent song-ending.
I guess some are cool, but the one on TTT is especially frustrating, cause
JP is soloing, and all the sudden it starts fading out. I love JP solos
and feel like there was more to that solo that we can't here. there's
slightly more of it on the demo version, but not much. just a thought.

Warlock is definitely worth a listen, especially their album Triumph and

    electric hooked-up-to-giant-amplifiers-with-a-bunch-of-distortion Kazoo. :)
Hmm....that might sound stupid, but it'd be damned cool. If he could get
something like that to use to make his voice sound like a different
instrument or synths or something, he'd never have to be bored during the
instrumental sections. Although, my guess is he needs the instrumentals,
otherwise his voice would be completely gone. It all works out. :)

The only advice I have to offer for your problem is to tell you that I do
the very same thing. I don't really mean to do it, it just happens. I
mean, I try to give any music a chance, but I just end up going back to
DT. Also, I go through stages -- like new DT stuff for a few weeks, then
back to old stuff. I like it all, it's just that when I'm listening to a
certain era of DT (new or older stuff), I get so into it that its hard for
me to pop in any other CD. Anyone else have that problem? Although it
doesn't happen very often, sometimes I don't even listen to DT at all for
a few weeks. Not that I mean to... Enough of this rambling...

    Frankly,
I hope that some of the songs are wimpy and un-prog-like. Why are
we pinholing our band? They have written this stuff in the past, but
they can change too y'know? I happen to like wimpy songs. I think
James' singing is at his best in songs like Wait for Sleep and the
Intro and Outro for Surrounded. James has winderful control of his
voice and I'd love to hear them write a simple(for them anyway) and expressive song
like "Seven Sundays" or "Don't Leave Me Now." I think most can
agree with me that III Sides was one of their favorite(and perhaps
may still be) albums of all time and the variations of musical style
within are just incredible! Let's not expect DT to be something that
they may not want to be. Let's just sit back and wait and appreciate
them for whatever style they may pursue.

I guess that wasn't really that frank.

    Subject: Awake Cover

Then on the Awake cover I've made an interesting link: remember the old
greek statue ? In "Voices" it says '...the old man takes the poison...'.
This is, IMO a reference to Socrate, who was forced to drain the poisonous
cup. After all, the whole song has some sort of religious-antique
    atmosphere. Again, coincidence ?

Could be, except that the statue is Michelangelo's _Moses_.

    Subject: The Suicide Solution...

Courageous or cowardly? Depends on the situation/person!
I used to think about doing it, not out of despair, or bravado,
but out of boredom--- wanting to see what was next because
this life was... uninteresting. I'll see in a few decades,
anyway, I decided... what's the hurry? *No* experience is
worthless, though there are a lot of worthless experiences (?).

    Subject: Voices: Lemur & Labrie

(Damnit! I deleted the digest and forgot what I was going to say.)

This is such a (sic) cool idea-- hearing the human voice singing as just
an instrument is awesome to hear. Remember Geddy Lee singing "ahhh" at the
beginning of "2112"? Dream Theater needs to do this-- put James in the
    instrumentals.

I didn't much care for it on Long Island Expressway.

Actually, I do like some Green Day stuff, and I didn't say they're no good
at what they do. I merely said that their playing ability doesn't stand up
to doing DT covers. I respect bands for playing any type of music if they
do it well. In fact a *lot* of the bands I listen to are nowhere near as
talented (in terms of playing ability) as DT, but I get the same pleasure
    from listening to them.

    > hell, it's very difficult to write a driving 3-minute popsong using only

In that case you'd realise that, as good as they might be at writing their
3-chord pop songs, and as much as we both respect them for doing it and
doing it well, they would not be able to play DT. That is above their limit.

    > it's an extremely dangerous attitude to think that only prog

Actually that's not what I was saying. If you remember, the original point
made was that of Green Day covering a DT song. In this case there is, as
I've said, no substitute for being able to play well. I made no comment
about Green Day's regular music, and I never said that just because they
    don't have DT's talent they're no good.

    > p.s. i don't like green day, nor do i listen to their music. i just
    > respect them for being what they wanna be, no more, no less.

I understand that, but the comments you make about my original post make
it look as though I was trying to put down Green Day in some way. I would
never criticise them for doing what they do, because they do it well and
it's what they want to do. My comments were made regarding Green Day doing a
DT cover, and I stand by what I said.

    Cheers,

I woke up this morning to the Rudh song, Test for Echo. Even in a semi-conscious state, I enjoyed it. After the tune ended the DJ said that "you should get out a check Rush out when they come around because this may be the last time together." I can't believe this. The radio DJ said that this was turned on by a lack in album sales. He also said that Alex and Geddy were really getting into their side projects. It will be a dark day for progressive rock if Rush calls it quits. I haven't liked their past stuff, but the new album, I like. Can anyone confirm or hopefully, discomfirm what I heard? Tony

My post about suicide being a cowardly thing to do needs a little disclaimer:

I was only talking about "mentally-healthy" people committing suicide, not mentally-ill people. The mentally-ill who commit suicide are not cowards by any stretch of the imagination, since they are not thinking in their right minds at the time.

My thanks to an anonymous jammer who set me straight on this issue.
