Now I got a lot of things to say. I knew from the get go that since I
said I didn't care for old Rush, I would get a response like I did from
Frederico M.S. Barbosa on the Jam #1875. He wrote:
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
But I disagree with everything you said about RUSH past stuff. You know,
DREAM THEATER wouldn't be what they are if they don't have listened to RUSH
past stuff, and learned how to play it. Most of DT songs are inspired in
RUSH songs. Did you know that ???
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I realize that Rush paved the road for Prog Rock for band like DT, FW,
and tons of others. I believe I stated in my first post, that the one
reason I never really got into Rush was because I couldn't stand
    Geddy's voice. He sounded like a little troll/imp. I don't like his
banshee like voice. However, on TFE his singing was very
ear-friendly. I didn't hear him shriek. He sounded very good.
Anyways, just so EVERYbody knows, Rush is a great band, and they
always be. They are just not one of my favorites.

My jaw almost dropped when I read that thing about Gary Cherone in Van
Halen. Someone said that it will be very interesting. That is an
understatement!!!! However, does anybody know if Extreme is now over
and done with? I just read that Nuno's album will be out early next
year and that Cherone was doing broadway type shows. I read that
Cherone and Bettencourt have written some tunes for the new Extreme
album. But, the next Extreme album won't even be recorded until late
next year. I was hoping to see Roth with Van Halen again, but,
    AAAAAAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!!! I'm so confused.

One thing I'm not confused about is Steve Vai's new one. I just
picked it up a couple of days ago and.....WOW!!! His voice is
great!! I'm not going to say much about his guitar playing
because.....Nuff Said. The only thing that bugged me about his
singing would be his style. He sounds like he's using is voice like
the guitar. I mean that the vocals don't have a fluid style such as
GT, JL, and others. It sounds like he's reading notes off of a page
of music without encorporating his soul. But again, his vocals DO NOT
take away from the cd. They make it richer.

Seriously, I condier that to be the highlight of the show I saw (New London,

    that. :)

erm... i sort of remember somebody bashing somebody for listening
alanis. it took place here, on the list. on with the show, if it
weren't that way, i definitely wouldn't have noticed it. i read every
jam, but never any more than briefly and only once. then, some jams
sent to me go to the data heaven.

funny thing is that i just received a jam from august 8. :-) god
knows where it came from. i do know that our mailer was down and out
    from august 1 till august 15 because i wasn't watching. :-)

I think that Bombay is definately like a La Villa/Xanadu experiment.
    It's a cool tune.
What about Eve? One of my favorite instrumentals.
Musically, it has some nice touches. Kevmo's style is real prominant.....
(even thought the whole band contributed to the tune).

Wonder if that was influenced by anything.

    Also,
Ya know how Kevin's tune "On The Page" says...
"...everytime I lock the door, someone puts in metaphors,
life was so much cleaner on the page."

Could that in any way relate to DT heavily embelishing
on the songs and contributions he made to the band's music?

I don't intend to hit any soft spots, but look at what they did w/TTT
on the January 1995 tour (particularly boot video from Japan)

    Later,

Okay, whoever this guy is, I hope he's ashamed of himself, because he just made himself look like a fool on the whole ytsejam! Notice what he said here: >Well, albums from "Signals" to "Roll the Bones" are no good, >most DREAM THEATER fans know that

Well, sorry to crush your hopes of trying to sound like you know what your talking about, but most DREAM THEATER fans (and now we know how much of a DT fan you're NOT) know that these albums were VERY heavy influences in DT's music. Just listen to SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO, and ROLL THE BONES!!! They are fucking AWESOME. I mean just LISTEN to the keyboard backings and all around musical composition, and any idiot can see that it was a definite influence on DT. Just LISTEN to the keys, that's a dead give away. So, saying that those later RUSH albums are no good is a pretty bold, but very uneducated statement. But to generalize that most DT fans *KNOW* that they are no good is just plain stupid!

    [BS mode on]

Back to fade-outs: normally you should be able to finish a song one way or another. Something that happens quite often with my band is that we discover a whole new theme while seqrching for an ending to a song, so in fact 1-2 minutes get easily added to the song. Cewl.

=46ade-outs are also fun to listen to, because the band does all sorts of funny stuff or fuck-ups etc. FW's Point of View from the Parallels album is a good example. The band and especially Mark (Zonder) starts doing cool stuff.

=46ade-outs are also dangerous because you're crankin the volume mega-high t= o fetch the last tenth of second of the song and you're not quick enough to turn it down before the next songs starts.

    :-))

And usually bands are aware of this and they're real bastards because the song that follows a fade-out starts always as f=81=AE=9F=DF=8F=81=AE## noisy= as possible.

So there you are, wondering if you caught all of the fading song and the nexrt second you've got a speaker cone stuck to your right ear.

I'd have to disagree with Jim Shields on the quality of ZOOM products. I have had a ZOOM 9002 for years and I'm always using that thing! I think ZOOM stuff is great for practicing -- but too noisy for live performance. The 9002 has some nifty effects and I actually find the distortion/amp simulation to be pretty realistic and it sounds pretty good on tape. The 9002 is also great because it's TINY and has a recharg(e?)able battery that lasts for three hours, so if you wanna go sit on a park bench and play yer guitar and hear it, you can! It's also got a metronome (VERY important for practicing) and an A 440 tuning pitch. The ZOOM 9002 isn't a suberb preamp, nor is it a great digital effects processor, but it's the coolest electric-guitar practice aid around. And it weighs much less than a rack. :)

    My $.02.

After listening to the new EJ disc a few thousand times (a couple more than the new Rush disc), I truly believe that it is the most poignantly beautiful album of the decade, maybe besides Ah Via. To those that think it boring, look again and see how Eric weaved all those sounds together. It is a really kind of subtle album that hits you with all these little melodic tricks! Anyway, he's still my number one cat, and I guess that's all that really matters. I just hope I get to tell him that in person in Columbus on Oct. 30!
