Kain wrote the following in Ytsejam #1881:
    >> In my opinion PROGRESSIVE MUSIC is GOOD MUSIC, and POP MUSIC IS BAD MUSIC.
    >Oh shit now i HAVE to get rid of a lot of cd's cause POP MUSIC IS BAD
    >MUSIC.

Don't sweat it. Personally, I've found that there's two camps of prog
listeners. The first camp is the absolute purists, won't listen to
anything outside of progressive music. The second group likes prog - and
a dozen other genres, too. I think that people with broad tastes will
tend to enjoy conversing with others with broad tastes, and those with
narrow tastes get more from talking with those with similar tastes.

Damon wrote the following in #1884:
    >Cuts easier to mix? Cold fades, whatever you call them?

I hate to tell you this, but cold fade is an oxymoron. A cold ending is
one that just stops (i.e. "Pull Me Under"), whereas a fade out is pretty
    much what it sounds like.

    >I don't know, I think fades are easy to mix than dead stops.

Not if the music being played is extremely different. For example, I
found really excellent engineering hard to find in the 80s on the Top 40
stations because the station might be going from Michael Jackson to Van
    Halen to Depeche Mode.

    >As a radio dj at a college station,

I was involved with student radio throughout all four years of my high
school education. The reason I didn't continue on in college is because
I spent two years at a school without a station, and when I transferred,
I would had to have done grunt work for six months to a year just to get
    my own show there.

    >I can say this. if you don't time the cut right, or you're not paying
    attention,
    >you got dead air. Fades give the D.J. time if he isn't paying attention. It's
    like
    >jumping out of a plane. one guy lands on cement, the other a cushion. I'd
    rather
    >the cushion.

Personally, I always liked to vary my transitions - more acoustically
    pleasing, I felt.

Erm, Augie? Pat? Is there something we should know about you
            two?
    *****
Okay. I went home and listened to Altura last night. I don't
understand why these guys were getting slagged on a little in
the past. I don't think they sound like DT at all. I kind of
think of them as a heavier Enchant. Good stuff! Not quite as
polished as Lemur Voice (still waiting for someone to tell me
what a lemur sounds like), but good all the same. One thing I
noticed about both bands is that all the dudes have long hair,
except for one. Is this, like, a contractual obligation? !^)>
I wonder when MC is going to sign a band with a female singer...
            I love female singers.

As for Fire Garden... I only listened to the first side yet,
but I think this is light-years ahead of the new EJ or the last
Satch album. It's a thousand times more varied and adventureous
than either of the aforementioned. But I guess that's because
Vai hasn't "matured" or "progressed", right?

No way, man. I get seasick. :)

While I'm on the topic... I'm afraid that I won't be able to attend
this year's Ytsecon. :( I have to take a standardized test (yum) to
get accepted into a Ph.D. program, and the only time those lovely ETS
people are offering it is Saturday, October 12th, from 3:00 to 6:00. I
could take it later in the year, but the grades would be reported too
late to do me any good. So, does anyone have any definite post-Con
plans? I'm going to be in NY anyway, and I want to hang out with all
you crazy folks again. If anyone has ideas of what you are doing, or
want to do, post here or e-mail me.

YYEEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!! Not a bad idea (though peoria wasn't exactly the
first place I had in mind, even though I know some people from there).
Now, how about st. Louis? Hmm, anyone, anyone? I mean, for a central
location, you couldn't do much better, IMO (no, I'm not saying this
because I live near there). I mena, we have the airport, we have a
decent amount of clubs and hotels, not to mention a good number of
jammers I'm sure would be willing to open their houses to some poor saps
who can't afford the hotels :). We also have the riverboats (not a good
idea for you gambling addicts, of course, there are some boats that
don't have the gambling on them :). Also, many convention
centers/hotels with convention rooms, etc. It'd be great for a con in
the midwest (bummer the Mytsecon had to be canned). Chicago would also
    be a good place.
Man, that'd be freakin' hilarious to see Kev and Derek duking it out on
Casios. Just thinking about it reminds me of when i saw the thing on
Conan where Dweezil and Ahmet Zappa were playing a Sabbath tune with
John Tesh on a Casio (or something like that).
And as far as the beatings go, forget the bats, let's use the kids'
favourite toy, LOG (everyone wants a log, you're gonna love it, log...
oh nevermind :). Later all. HAVE FUN AT THE FRIGGIN' CON WITHOUT
    ME!!!!!!!!

    Dear jammers,

Hey there! Here's an update for the YtseCon III! First of all, it will
take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY), on Saturday, October
12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have spoken to Dream Theater and management, and
they say that there is a good chance that they will be there.

The cost for pre-paid tickets is $20 per person. The cost at the door
will be $25 per person. This will cover the cost of the conference room
and other miscellaneous stuff (name tags, programs, etc.). If you would
like to pay in advance, please send a check to:

    YtseCon III
    c/o Jeff Chew
    350 Broadway, Suite 703
    New York, NY 10013

When you send a check, please include a note or letter that says your
name, return address, e-mail address, and phone number. This makes things
a lot easier for us when we send the tickets back to you, plus if we ever
need to get in contact with you.

Since the Con is coming up pretty close already, and we haven't had the
chance to get our acts together to mail out the tickets/name tags, we've
decided to distribute the name tags (they will be numbered) at the door.
So, you will have to bring a form of ID so you can pick up your ticket.

Due to the lack of reservations, we have decided to return the block of 75
rooms to the Marriot. So, we have arranged it so that you can contact the
Marriot through their 800 number. If you need a room, call the La Guardia
Marriot at 1-800-882-1043. *REMEMBER TO TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE GOING TO
THE "DREAM THEATER CONVENTION"*. The deadline to reserve a room is
October 4th. If you need to find someone to split a room with, the staff
is still doing that (well, Greg is), so you can contact him at
    grc8@columbia.edu.

If you plan on flying to the YtseCon III, we have arranged something with
Rich Worldwide Travel so you can reserve airline tickets through them by
calling their 800 number. Please call 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that
you are going to the 'Dream Theater Convention'.

If you can provide a ride to the YtseCon III, or if you are in need of a
ride, please contact me by either e-mailing me or calling me and I will
    see what I can do.

Syrinx gave me the idea of writing up a list of paid tickets. If you sent
out a check to me and you're not on the list, let me know! IT could be
either lost in the mail or it didn't get to me yet. Well, here goes:

1N - One night reserved at the Marriot (these are only the ones that were
sent to me rather than directly to the Marriot)

2N - Two nights reserved at the MArriot

    R - Providing rides

    L - Providing a place to stay

    Paid:

    001 Ryan T. Rafaloff 002 Ryan T. Rafaloff 003 David Neff
    004 Sean Haider 005 Sean Haider 006 Brian Anderson + 1N
007 Brian Anderson 008 Brian Anderson 009 Pat Gravino
    010 Mike Ostrich + 1N 011 Mike Ostrich 012 Dave Pack
    013 Brian Levy 014 Jason Breitweg 015 Mike Bahr + 1N
016 Josh Sager 017 Josh Sager 018 Josh Sager
019 Josh Sager 020 Jeff Chew 021 Greg Chew
022 Michael Pomerleau 023 Michael Pomerleau 024 Matthew Erwich
025 Paul Cashman 026 Brian Kirk 027 Brian Kirk
028 Jeffrey Falk 029 Pat Sullivan 030 Joe Cristina
    031 Irene Raceu

Okay, that's it so far. It's not looking very good so far, and I really
need the money to put the deposit on the conference room, so I'd prefer if
you guys sent me the money ahead of time rather than paying more at the
door. That's it for now. If there are any mistakes, e-mail me! I'll
    talk to you soon!

    Yours,
    Jeff =)

** It looks like the tshirts for YtseCon III have been canceled. Jeff
** Chew has decided to make my Ytsejam shirt the official shirt of
** YtseCon III. The shirt will still debut at YtseCon III as planned.
** For those of you asking, I can't mail out shirts before the Con. Even my
** girlfriend isn't getting one before the Con. :) If you don't know if
** you're going yet, don't panic, if you're there, pick it up there, if not,
** I'll mail if after the Con as planned.

I spoke to the print shop, and production begins this week. I will have
the shirts next weekend. They will premier at the Con on the 12th of
October, and mail orders will go out starting on the 16th.

    =======
    Details
    =======

The Ytsejam shirts are two sided prints. The front of the shirt features
a *full color* raytraced graphic from Chris Haley in Washington. The
graphic is a beautifully done scene with the Majesty logo floating behind
a group of marble columns on a tile floor with a wide view of space
    visible behind.

The back of the shirt will be done in a solid blue color. The majority
of the design is a huge Majesty logo, framed by the Dream Theater title
at the top, the mailing list address on the sides and "Ytsejam" at the
bottom. Below that is "Internet Mailing List" between two more Majesty
    logos.

** The print order has been increased to 200 shirts. I'm hoping that
** this will cover all of the orders, but if I have to, I will do a
    ** second run.

You can check out all of the details, as well as a preview of the shirts
    at:
    http://www.phlab.missouri.edu/~c675311/ytsejam/

Please note: Due to some legal issues, the University will no longer allow
me to keep this commercial advertisement on their server. To sidestep this
issue, Chris Merlo was kind enough to put the page up on his account.
Please go to the URL above and follow the link to the new site.

    =======
    Pricing
    =======

The cost of the shirts is $16 each. The shirt is damn close to concert
quality, so $16 is a steal (last Dream Theater concert I was at charged
$23 for a shirt!). If you require a size larger than XL, please let me
know ASAP so I can get those orders in. There is an additional $1 charge
for each size increase (ie. XXL = $17). If you are picking the shirt up
from me directly or will be at YtseCon III, the $16 price stands. If you
won't be at the Con and can't get the shirt in person, you can order one
through the mail for $20 to cover shipping.

I spoke with the people at the post office and I've decided to set the
shipping prices outside the USA at $9, for a total of $25. I realize
this is damn expensive for a tshirt, and I'm sorry. If individual prices
are signifigantly less expensive, I will gladly return a check for the
    balance.

    The rundown:
M, L or XL shirt, pick up, or at the Con: $16
M, L or XL shirt, mailed in the US: $20
M, L or XL shirt, mailed outside the US: $25
    XXL add $1
    XXXL add $2

    ========
    Ordering
    ========

The shirts are open to pre-ordering now. You can reserve one by check or
money order to ensure that you will get one. I definitely recommend
this. By ordering early, you can make sure you get a shirt, as well as
ensure that the whole project goes of without a hitch. Checks and money
orders will be held until the weekend before the Con (Oct. 4th) at which
point they will be cashed to cover the rest of the payment when I pick up
the shirts. Those of you at the Con will receive your shirts then. Mail
orders will begin shipping the week after the Con, most likely on that
    Wednesday (Oct. 16th).

To order, send a check or money order for the proper amount (see pricing
    above) to:

    Pat Griffin
    573A Hudson Hall
    1202 E. Rollins St.
    Columbia, MO 65201

Make them payable to Pat Griffin, and remember this in US dollars.

    Be sure to include:
            Your name.
            Email address.
            Mailing address.
            Phone number.
Quantity of shirts you want to order.
            The size of each.
Whether or not you will be at YtseCon III.

I will keep you up to date on the status of the shirts through email.

That would probably be "She's So Heavy" from Mike's (and my) beloved "Abbey
    Road" album.

Sure! Here's what you missed - James was fired and replaced by Sammy
Hagar, who promptly became an Xtian, so he was fired and replaced by Gary
Cherone, who started singing J C Superstar at his audition and so he was
fired, and then DT called David Lee Roth but he showed up stoned, so they
called Lane Staley but he showed up on smack, so they called Scott Weiland
(same deal), so they called Charlie D but he didn't hear the phone cuz he
was out standing in his driveway waving at cars, so they quickly called
back James, who rejoined! 'Course, most people never even heard about any
of this, except us 'jammerz! If you don't believe me, Brian, this news
was in Ytsejam #2112. (OK, I looked ahead a little).

I agree with you that Derek is better. But probably for a different
reason. Know why? 'Cause he's smart enough to stay in the best band in
    the world!

That reminds me of a little gem I heard on Denver radio ( a woman called
    this in for the KBPI "joke-off" . . .)

Do you know why women have those little bumps around their nipples?
    It's braille for "Suck me!"

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We'll be landing
shortly. Thanks for flying the friendly skies of Ytsejam! We realize you
have a choice of 'jams and we're glad you chose Ytsejam! Buh-bye! Bye now!
    Buh-bye!

    Sir Reality

Lemme think... you're trying to convince me to send him some
lovely e-mails with really censored contents, in good loud portuguese,
to see if I can make that guy shut the hell up?
Yeah, I'll se what I can do. :) Just need his e-mail.
Only don't ask me to translate and put here for you to see. :)
