            Excellent! There are some definite similarities although
    Mike's solo reminds me a little more of the one Neil played during the
    75-80 period during Working Man with the exception of his use of the
    cymbals.
            I feel a stronger link with YYZ too. The song has a much more
    Eastern theme than La Villa.

    >Big deal. these bands still make good music in my mind

            EXACTLY!!!! Damon has hit the nail right on the head.

            Listen up people.

            If you listen to it and it rocks you, angers you, makes you
    weep, fills you with joy or inspires you and you keep coming back to
    it, then it's good!!!
            Labels have no place in music. I care about what my head and
    heart tell me about the music, not what some insecure moron who has to
    have his whole world neatly partitioned thinks.
            My library consists of music from almost any sonic genre you
    could name and I love all of it for different reasons. Dream Theater
    could do an entire record in 4/4 and if I enjoyed the songs, I
    wouldn't care at all. Time signature variations, a trademark of 70s
    progressive, don't make for good music. There are plenty of bands that
    jump all over the staff paper that may be progressive by label, but
    still write music that I would never purchase. Why? It doesn't satisfy
    me musically or emotionally.
            Music is subjective and we'll all have our favorites and
    goats. The point is not to let the corporate pinheads squelch your
    willingness to explore with their constrictive labels.
            Dalbello's new record, Whore, has every possible musical label
    on it that I could affix. It has funk, heavy rock, alternative grit
    and the introspective Promised Land kind of sound. Is it consistently
    progressive?
            Lyrically yes, instrumentally no. Do I care? Absolutely not.
    The album is a masterpiece, quite possibly the best record I've heard
    in a long time. Can I apply a general label to it? Yes. Music I enjoy.
    That's my only boundary. If I like it, then that's all that matters to
    me.
            Labels create walls and limit the individual's tastes.
            My advice is to listen to EVERYTHING you can get you hands on,
    especially if you are a musician. Everything that you hear affects
    your perception of the sonic environment around you and broadens the
    canvas on which you live. Music is a huge part of life. To turn away
    from something because of a label is to deny yourself one of the
    essential components of human existence, discovery.
            There is no bad music. Only music that doesn't appeal to you.

            Beauty also lies in the ear of the beholder.

    Cheers,

    Rick

    Beautiful quote. Talk about hitting the nail on the head! This is
    my exact theory on music. That's why I listen to everything from
    Slayer to Yanni. Everything counts. Just because I don't like
    things as much as the other person doesn't make me any less of a
    musician. If we all liked the same kind of music, then everyone's
    music would typically sound the same, and you can imagine what kind
    of a boring world that would be!

    > From my own point of view, I'm much happier with what I've

    That's the way I feel. If you'll believe, I used to listen to
    Nirvana all of the time, and become completely digusted when people would
    offer to have me listen to Dream Theater, Queensryche, Steve Vai,
    etc. I always thought bands with talent were just out to show off and
    not offer their fans more than a bunch of solos and low-quality lyrics.
    Then I joined a band. I realized how boring playing stuff like
    Nirvana really was and how great DT-type stuff can be. It just goes
    to show that musicians generally listen to DT while dope-smoking kids
    really don't know what they're missin'. Flame away, I used to be
    there once, too. I just grew out of it.

    BTW,
        Brain, I'm having trouble getting through to your samples. I
    keep getting one of thoses 404 file not found errors. Also, I'm
    trying to fix up that new age song I composed to send you.. I'll get
    it to you as soon as I can figure out how to get my synth to do fades
    (heh, heh, flame on!)

    Also, on the new albums thing, don't forget
    10/15? Van Halen's Greatest Hits album
    10/22 Journey's Trial by Fire (Woo! Woo!)

    Jammers-
    Yes, the next (or one of the next) ytsecons should be somewhere
    accessible for the rest of us unfortunate enough to be somewhere
    other than the tri-state/New England area. I realize that much of
    the list IS there (as is DT, who would undoubtedly have to make wierd
    arrangements to be at a ytsecon in Peoria), but I wouldn't mind
    driving out to, say, a ytsecon on a Mississippi River steamboat. In
    fact, I motion that the next ytscon be on a steamboat, lasting two or
    three days as we float down the river...

    Well, I don't know if you really read the FAQ. Because it says that KevMo
    and the rest of DT just parted ways. Nowhere does it say that he was not
    into Progessive Music anymore. That's because KevMo's music _IS_
    progessive! It's just not Prog-Metal. Also, Fred, uh... If you haven't

    WOOHOO! The con is only 14 days away!! I might be able to provide a ride
    for someone. I live in NJ. I think Damon needed a ride. Well this is
    really for anyone. If you live near Routes 4, 17, 20, 46, 208, 287(or is it
    278?), or the Turnpike I can probably give you a ride. But please don't ask
    for a ride if you don't live near the exits off these routes because NJ's
    road signs suck! I know that is a general statement but its true! ;-) Whoa,
    I never really thought about how many routes go through my town.

    Well, my mail server had some problems on Wednesday, so I haven't read
    any jams in 5 days, meaning 14 jams built up in my box. I don't erally
    have time to read them, so if there's any important news, could somene
    let me know? Anyway, hate to bring up Pearl Jam on the jam again, but
    they were GREAT last night. The whole show was divided almost evenly
    throughout the 4 eras (5 from Ten, 7 from Vs, 6 from Vitalogy, 6 from No
    Code). Eddie sounded INCREDIBLE, just some asshole in the VIP area in
    fromt of me stood on a platfrom for the whole show and blocked my whole
    view of what little I could see of the stage. The opening act, Ben Harper
    was real good. It was like a jam-band type of thing. With bands like DMB
    and Blues Traveler making it, these guys may be the next big thing.
    Speaking of Blues Traveler, John Popper came out and did a harmonica solo
    durong Even Flow(!?), which was an extra treat. Only problem was I got
    rained on for 2 hours and transportation got all fucked up and I didn't
    wind up getting back to Valley Stream until 3 am from a show that ended
    at 10 pm. Oh well.

    This is to re[ly to Kurt....most of DT's songs do have a lot of "odd"
    time signautures....it is really cool the way that they make them sound
    normal....like erotomania....the main riff is in 5/4....not 4/4...there
    are also some sections in 7/8...it is really listener friendly
    though....some songs that stick out as almost entirely 4/4 are PMU,
    and....maybe lie....I don't know....whatever it just sounds good...I
    don't think one of definitions of prog is nessasarily the use of odd
    meters...prog means progressive...the artists are doing thing people
    really aren't doing in the mainstream...that's all...people called 80's
    rush prog...they just had longer songs...is really wasn't that
    complicated...longer forms and ideas....

    Message-ID: <9609292157.AA01840@hawkmail.monmouth.edu>

       Hey, guys. Since the con is coming up, I am going to propose some fun
    events for us ytsejammers. Now, it is rumored that the band will be there,
    but these are extra ciricular activities that we may even be able to get the
    band involved in.

      First, and most importantly, let's get all the names straight. Most of us
    only know each other by aliases or irc nicknames. I guess there will be
    nametages, but how will this help me? So, we should all go around the room
    and say who we are. This will also give the opportunity for enemies to note
    who they are so that they can settle internet squabbles the old fashioned
    way. Outside.

      Secondly, let's have a round of ask the band dumb questions. Yes,
    everything we all have posted to the jam 1800 times or more, let's ask the
    band. This way, we won't be seeing these questions again.

      Third, let's all badger Derek about how he isn't as good as Kevin More.
    Now, bear in mind that I don't agree with this at all, but since the debate
    is on, let's invite Kevin and have the two of them duke it out on a Casio
    keyboard with minikeys, all right? Should make for an interesting event. The
    winner gets our undying love and gets to stay in dT. Yeah.

      Fourth, let's play all our prog rock CDs in order of release. And while
    we're at it, we can also trade WAV files in person. Skadz can bring his
    computer and sound system and we can all hear the wavs in person. Also, bring
    your band's demo cassette or CD. Anybody with a band we've never heard of can
    bring their CD. Let's have on ebig listening party.

       Promote your web site. Yes, we can all promote our web pages as well, by
    writing them down on our name tags. Wait. This goes back to no. 1, doesn't
    it? Anybody know braille? I can read your nametag with my fingers. This would
    probably not do well with the women, but hey, you gotta deal, you know?

       Finally, the main event. if you're not drinking, you might take fond of
    this last event which should bring down the house. Let's get Frederico and
    Mindcrimer to come to the con, and play beat the pinyata with them. This
    would be a great stress reliever for most of us jammers. I'll bring the
    stuffed wiffle ball bat, or do we want to use regulation major league bats?
    And if so, wood or metal bats? Better yet, I'll have my cane with me, we can
    use that. Whe winer gets the satisfaction of beating up two assholes. How do
    we know when you've won? Well, I think we should just let Skadz decide that.
    Or maybe Itchy, since he's so fond of Frederico, by the number of posts he's
    sent lovingly to him. Any more ytsecon III events? post them here. Hey, it
    beats reading the ytseflame digest, doesn't it?

    Part of my last anti-Frederico post got a bit Phuqed up...
    I know *why*, but I'm not telling :-) Here's that part again :

    > Well, the term "Progressive" makes me feel really good !
    > If music is not Progressive, then it's rubish.

      You are fucking rubbish. If the term "Progressive" makes you feel
      *that* good, why don't you just jerk off while listening to
      "Tales From Topographic Oceans" and leave us the hell alone !!!

    Oh yeah :

    > Maybe I'm not a DT fan or not a RUSH fan either.

      Your *neither* ! You're just another 'mindcrimer' ! FUCK YOU !
      ~~~~
    Make that "You're" :-)
    I feel kinda bad for flaming *this* hard. Usually I'm not like that
    at all, but this dude just totally pissed me off. It *was* exciting
    seeing all the others flame him too, though. And posting that last
    flame gave me a *NEW* RUSH !!!
    Anyway, my "Definition Of Prog Rock"-page is up, including the first
    draft of Itchy's "What is Prog Rock"-form. I invite you all to put in
    your 2 cents (I'm saving for a new PC) by putting *your* definition of
    Prog-Rock in my Prog-Rock (Guest)Book. Let's settle this thing once
    and for all ! ;-)
    Oh yeah, there will be a NEW "Most Frequent Poster List" too, in a few
    days :-) If you have any suggestions on how to make the MFP-list
    better, let me know... There is still time for your homepage to make this
    month's list, btw :-) Just mention the URL in your next message :-)
         Not in a CD Changer, 'cause I have a single-tray player (that's
    starting to suck, as though I have more than 50 albuns at the time).
    But that's what I'm listening :)
    YT> 2. Marty Friedman - Introduction
    YT> 6. Eric Johnson - Venus Isle (Thanks for the reccomendations!)
         I have to check some time those Marty Friedman's albuns, and those
    Cacophony too (I heard "Speed Metal Symphony" kicks ass).
         One question: what style does Eric Johnson play? Sorry, I've never
    heard anything from him.
    YT>Dream and Today Unite, and Subconscious CDs come in!
         What's on this "When Dream and Today Unite"? If it's cool, I'll
    look for it around here.
    Actually, there is a converter. You just get it, untar it and compile. It
    is called sox. You can grab sox-7.tar.gz from
            http://cclub.tutcc.tut.ac.jp:1080/~go/tokimeki2.html
    The page is in Japanese but you can d/l the tar file. Instructions should
    be in English....
