Hi guys! As a music theory loser, I noticed a chance to be helpful to
someone when I read the following message:

    >I tend to believe that for the most part the song was a cool jam based on a
                                                  ^^^^ "Bombay Vindaloo"
    >specific scale, one I so fondly call the "snake charmer". If anyone knows
    >the actual name...? The song basically plays around the E with with a jump
    >up a half step back to D then they do octaves up the length until resolving
    >back to the E.

    >E F G+ A B C D E I believe.

As you spelled it, it is the 5th mode of A Harmonic Minor, which is
called E Phrygian Dominant. It's cool because the I and II chords are
both major. Something cool I like to do is sprinkle D# in there for
extra seasoning (makes the snake taste better ;)

    Take it easy,

On 28 Sep 96 at 9:59, ytsejam@ax.com spewed forth the following
    words:

    > I DON'T FORGIVE RUSH : THEY BETRAYED THE PROGRESSIVE MUSIC IDEAL.
    > They turned on a POP MUSIC STYLE, and sold out themselves. They
    > decided to make music to set RADIO STATIONS playlist and MTV.

you know, this whole attitude i hear from some prog fans kind of
bugs me. wtf is a sellout? any time a band decides to make music
that may sound more mainstream, or hell, just makes music that *you*
don't like, all i hear is the words SELL OUT SELL OUT. you seem to
expect Rush to make music that doesn't sound like the current popular
music trend. by making a conscious effort to write something
different, you're not being true to yourself as a writer. Rush is a
band that has been around for over 20 years. 20 years. that's a
*hell* of a long time to be around in the music business. bands that
don't evolve and change don't stick around for 20 years. everyone at
some point(s) changes and goes in a new direction with their music.
if you can't handle it, too bad. grab some kleenex and shut up. but
christ, don't sit there on your high throne and judge a band that has
survived in the music business and has made music that people thoroughly
enjoy for as long as they have simply because *you* can't handle the
fact that they made music that *you* don't like.

    > They are fuckin' TRASH. I'd put them in a trash can.

heh. go for it. and while you're at it, why don't you jump in with
    them.

    > Well, generalizing is a very dangerous thing, I agree with you in this
    > statement.
    > Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE MUSIC FAN ???
    > Or maybe you are a POP MUSIC FAN (which is not that bad at all....).
    > Well, SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO,
    > and ROLL THE BONES sounds to me like a crossover between U2 and THE POLICE
    > and I'm really not interested in those bands. I'm interested in PROGRESSIVE
    > MUSIC.

oh man, i laughed my ass off at this... *you're* saying generalizing
is a danderous thing??!? you know, there are <gasp> people that like
U2 and The Police. and i don't really give a damn if you're not
interested in them. if you judge music simply because it doesn't
meet your "Holier Then Thou Opinion As To What Is Progressive",
you're doing the exact same thing as the people that listen to
popular music simply because it is popular. jeez, just sit back and
enjoy the music. if you don't like it, that's cool. but you're way
out of line to insult the artists calling them sell-outs and such.
you're not only dissrespecting the artists, you're making yourself
    look like a fool.

    > LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ROCK !!!
    > PROGRESSIVE ROCK WILL NEVER DIE !!!

    btw, quit shouting.

    > What is it progressing from?
    > Why do we call music "alternative", when it's now the norm, hmmm?
    > Why do we call music "progressive", but not know where it's
    > progressing from.
    > words for thought? possibly.

good point. and i'll be happy to give my answer... blech. who
cares? if you like it, you like it. the *only* time i'll try to
attach a label to a band is when i'm trying to verbally describe them
to someone when i don't have a tape or cd player handy to play the
album. i can't wait till the day comes when people can simply like
something because they like it; *not* because it's popular, *not*
because it's unpopular, but simply because they enjoy it.

    just my thoughts.
    Andrew

i emailed Marcel a few weeks ago from my work address. (i would've
pasted his response here but, of course, i deleted the message).
apparently he says his CD writer is still broken, and that he'd post
a message to the jam to give an update. well, i may have overlooked
it, but i don't recall seeing an update.

Marcel, if you're reading this, and you haven't done so already,
could you provide an update? if you already have and i missed it, my
    apologies.

if anyone else has any updates on this, could you email me?

    thanks.

I've been thinking about this a fair bit lately. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the next record was more sombre, focusing on some of the triumphs and tragedies of the last year for the members. I think we could be looking at a Promised Land type approach to the lyrics. Since we know they can pull off the wilder time signatures, I would really like to hear what they can do with some more straight forward 4/4 material.

    Cheers,

Last time I read the FAQ Kevin Moore *left* the band to pursue other music. Kelvin Moore, on the other hand, is a guy in my fire department who does *not* play keyboards, prog-style or otherwise.

The fucking balls on this guy! We don;t need to stoop as low as even mentioning their names on this list. Greenday sucks, And as far as Bon Jovi, never heard of the guy! But by the way, progressive music is what I *PLAY* in my band. So don't even try and think about spewing your limited, closed-minded knowledge on prog rock and prog metal to me or to the JAM.

    ------------------------------

TANGENT remember Rick Wakeman's solo on AEOY? Well, I've finally got that down and can now replicate that speed! Andrew, I'll send you a tape of me doing it!!... :P

    Anyways,

    >Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE MUSIC >FAN ??? Or maybe you are a POP MUSIC FAN Notice, I do not comdemn your musical tastes (I'm above that...most other Jammers are too and you need to work on that) I'm just sick of your close minded attitude! I am a musician, which means that I can appreciate ALL kinds of music and look down upon narow-minded people such as yourself. But as far as listening to POP music, I find it annoying. Love live progressive rock!! I agree. Prog rock will never die! I agreee!! Old RUSH stuff are masterpieces!! I FUCKING agree!! You've hit the money (he CAN be taught ladies and gents!!).

but!! >They turned on a POP MUSIC STYLE, and sold out themselves. They >decided to make music to set RADIO STATIONS playlist and MTV. eeeeeeaaahhh! Wrong guess, idiot. Would you like to play DOUBLE JEOPARDY where the scores can ReALLY change!?! Anyways, notice how the trend in the 80s were key-oriented music. Sure, RUSH changed with the times, but just because they had keys in their music doesn't mean that they sold out. If you consider it your way, then they're moving back into a more raw sound which (HARK!) is the trend now. They're still moving with the times and using more guitars. But one thing has never changed: they do NOT compromise quality music just because they use the style of the times. Since you condemned their last musical period for selling out, what about now? Why do you not consider them selling out now? Aren't they selling out to more alternative and guitar oriented music just like every other band around now? I think you need to go back and rethink your argument. I mean, its pretty bad contradicting your opinions like this. *YOU* don't like a certain style of music and you go and blame the band for selling out, while all of a sudden you do like their style and you mention nothing of them selling out. Oh well, I'm tired of this arguement. You go on with whatever you're gonna say back. I'm gonna go and get laid. Hopefully, other Jammers aren't as close minded as you! If so, they shouldn't be called Jammers! So, sorry, you'll never really be a true Jammer. Subsribe to some other narrow-minded list!

Again, do you know him personally ? *I* happen to *love* EACH and EVERY album Marillion, Dream Theater, Queensryche and Tori Amos have released, so far. Does that mean *I* am uncritical ? Maybe I just *really* love all those albums ! Maybe Rush fans can love *all* Rush albums too ! What the hell is your problem ?

    > Well, I think you have no brains at all...

That's better than having SHIT for brains >:)

    > Everybody knows that RUSH was a PROGRESSIVE BAND in the 70's, but RUSH > became a COMMERCIAL BAND in the 80's.

First off, Rush has NEVER actually been a progressive rock band... They're way too versatile to be pinned down with just *one* label. Rush did what the *others* did in the 70's (Zeppelin, Purple, Yes), but had the good sense to move on, by changing their style/sound with every album or so. In the 80's they added keyboards, only to dump them in the 90's... Right now they're a bit grungy, but that'll pass too. My point is, they keep changing their sound because they want to, not because they're selling out. They probably know they would *lose* more fans than they would *gain*, by doing that.

    > The same thing happened with YES and GENESIS in the 80's.

Genesis got fucked up by Phil Collins. Yes just turned into the Trevor Rabin band for a FEW albums (90125, Big Generator and Talk). Don't FUCKING call them COMMERCIAL because of THAT ! (hey, *I* can shout too!)

    > You may think I'm radical , but it's not true.

You're not radical, you're just a... nevermind... (Itchy, behave!)

    > I listen to a lot of different music styles (Progressive, Metal, > Blues, Jazz, ...), but one thing I really can't stand is POP MUSIC.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but POP MUSIC *isn't* a musical style... It's simply a label that is used for a bunch of songs that happen to get a lot of airplay at a certain time. *That* makes it POPular MUSIC.

    > I DON'T FORGIVE RUSH : THEY BETRAYED THE PROGRESSIVE MUSIC IDEAL. > They turned on a POP MUSIC STYLE, and sold out themselves. They > decided to make music to set RADIO STATIONS playlist and MTV.

I'd like to say "FUCK YOU", but I'm better than that. Rush changed. They did that because they had to. YOU want PROGRESSIVE ROCK to *always* sound like it did in the 70's. *I* call THAT REGRESSIVE ROCK rather than PROGRESSIVE. I don't want Dream Theater to keep making the exact same music they're making now... That would get boring... Each new album would just be another variation on a theme... *I* want them to GROW. And I want YOU to grow UP.

    > You know, they did not care about music quality, they were only > interested in making easy money. They wanted to become milionaire.

Do you really think Rush needs the money *that* bad.

    > I am not a communist (and I will never be one), but I condemm this > attitude.

Where did that communist thing come from ?

    > And one reason I really love DREAM THEATER is because DT'S music > IS AS GOOD AS OLD PROGRESSIVE RUSH STYLE. And I hope DREAM THEATER > WILL NOT BECOME A COMMERCIAL BAND AS RUSH BECAME.

We'll talk in a few years, when you're INSULTING every Jammer because, according to YOU, *Dream Theater* "Sold Out". In time, Dream Theater's songs *will* get shorter and probably less 'flashy'. I'm pretty sure of that. We'll see...

    >> Well, albums from "Signals" to "Roll the Bones" are no good, >> most DREAM THEATER fans know that

Are YOU *most* Dream Theater fans ? Why don't you organize a poll to see just how many Dream Theater fans "know" that those albums are "no good". You'd be surprised ! Personally, I think those albums are brilliant.

    > They are fuckin' TRASH. I'd put them in a trash can.

YOU are fucking trash. I'd put YOU in a trash can. How's *that* for a flame ?

    > An excelent RUSH album is something like "2112", "Hemispheres", > "Fly by Night".

    You forgot the almighty "IMO"

    > But I tell you what : "Conterparts" is a nice album. > And I dig "Test for Echo " !!!! :)))))

Wasn't that "Cunterparts" ? And "Test for Ego" ? I bet you passed *that* test !

    >> I mean just LISTEN to the keyboard backings and all around >> musical composition, and any idiot can see that it was a definite >> influence on DT. > > Well, I think I'm talking with a idiot in some place. It seems to me > you haven't read DT FAQ. DT Keyboard was inlfuenced by YES. > It seems to me you never listened to YES ALBUM, FRAGILLE, TALES > FROM TOPOGRAPHICS OCEANS, ...

Fragille ? inlfuenced ? Do you really think Kevin Moore as ONLY influenced by YES ? Are you really *that* stupid ? Oh... "The FAQ says so"... Well FAQ YOU !

    >> saying that those later RUSH albums are no good is a pretty bold, >> but very uneducated statement. But to generalize that most DT fans >> *KNOW* that they are no good is just plain stupid!

    Bravo !

    > Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE > MUSIC FAN ???

Are YOU ? SHOW DON'T TELL ! Oh wait... you probably didn't get that Rush-reference, since you obviously never gave "Presto" a fair chance.

    > Well, SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, > PRESTO, and ROLL THE BONES sounds to me like a crossover between U2 > and THE POLICE and I'm really not interested in those bands. I'm > interested in PROGRESSIVE MUSIC.

Hey, someone is having CAPS-lock problems... Ok, can you just shut your arrogant trap now ? A lot of the people on this list *love* Rush... If half of them prefer the 'new' Rush over the 'old' Rush, then you just insulted HALF of those people. HALF of those people can send a hell of a lot of flame-mail.

    > Hey, why don't you listen to Bon Jovi or Green Day stuff ??? > (Arghhh......)

There *are* people on this list who happen to enjoy those two bands, you know ?

    > LONG LIVE PROGRESSIVE ROCK !!! > PROGRESSIVE ROCK WILL NEVER DIE !!!

    YOU WILL !!!

If you feel the urge to flame me (back), please mail me privately. I don't want this crap to fuck up the Jam. Sorry to waste this much bandwidth. I just couldn't stand someone scaring off potential Rush fans by thrashing half their albums.

    > 3) "YYZ" - "YtseyJam" ???

Btw, Frederico... I would hardly call someone who doesn't even know how to spell "Ytsejam" a Dream Theater fan. You get about three *YTSEJAM* digests a day, and they ALL say *YTSEJAM*
