    Well let me start...
1.) Do a majority of 'Jamers agree to bombard Mr. Letterman with
REQ for Dream Theater? If I get three or more replys I'll contribute mail from three different accounts... (or poss. more)

2.) Does John P. play his Mesa/Boogie clean & use a pedal to
overdrive it, or does he let the amp distort?

3.) Does any one have a recommendation for a tube amp with a killer clean tone. Things to consider: I play DT to Hendrix, Clapton to
John McLaughin, & Rush to Santana... (Pretty wide huh... :) I also
play my music, which is flexible...

    Thanx...

Spines meaning, the side of the cover when you look at it that states
the group, title, and label..The Cd's are also differnt. Some
    differences
in cursive writing for times, just little things to make the Import/
    US different.

This coming Saturday will be a very important day for me. Not only is
it my 24th birthday (damn, I'm getting old!), but it will also be
precisely one year since I got my first issue of the Ytsejam.

My entire life has changed in the past year. I'm not the same person I
was then. I moved from Long Island to Vermont, met the woman of my
dreams, became a graduate student... the list goes on. In all this
time, however, the Ytsejam has been a very important part of my life.

It's hard for me to articulate my feelings for this list, and I won't
try because Mike Bahr has already done it. I just wanted to take this
opportunity, while I can think of the right words, to thank all of you
for the great information, the discussions, the tape trades, and, most
importantly, the great friendships that I have formed because of this
list. It seems silly to non-subscribers how much of an impact a mailing
list has had on my life for the past year. But it's more than a list.
We're a family. You all are my family away from home.

It's awfully convenient that the one thing we share in common is a love
for one of the best groups of musicians around, because we have
conversational ice-breakers when we meet. Thankfully, my relationships
with many of you have evolved way past that. My feelings for Dream
Theater's music and my feelings for my friends here have complememted each
other and grown with each other for the past year.

Newcomers, welcome aboard. You have now embarked upon a wonderful
journey. Along the way, if your experiece is at all similar to mine,
you will meet people and form relationships and create memories that will
last a lifetime. And you will also have a kick-ass soundtrack playing
    along with those memories. :)

Mike, thank you for inspiring me to find a way to express all this.
Congratulations on your wonderful news. Melissa's a lucky woman. See
    ya next month.

The following came from 'jam #1790:

    [WDADU]
    >I think its just that its a really sucky cover..

The thing is, though, a lot of the artwork/print looks like it was
fudged. Like it came from someplace else initially. So I guess, most
simplistically, the question should be was WDADU orginally released on CD
    in '89?

    >also the side one side two thing i read that it was a production mistake..

Same for the fact that it's lacking an album title, and it's off center?

Mike wrote the following in #1791:

    >I'm marrying Melissa, as you all know from Thoughts part 1. Both of us are
    hardcore
    >Jammers (she reads with me). It was when I introduced her to the depth of
    >the music in Awake and then ACOS that she left behind her pop idol discs,
    >took a serious listen to mine, and then our love grew and developed.

First off, congratulations! :) Secondly, I wanted to add that I was also
introduced to DT by the love of my life...and now I can kick his butt
with the fact that I have more knowledge about Dream Theater and prog
    than he does! ;)

In all seriousness, I appreciated your eloquent and very thoughtful
commentary. I know that I, too, feel that I am at a point of change and
reflection. Not that we aren't constantly changing, but sometimes it's
more profound than at other times. Sometimes people refer to a
particular song as being the soundtrack to their life, maybe ACoS will
    become that to many...

    Ha, fooled ya!

Anyway, I got some new cd's recently
and I would like to share some quick
capsule reviews for the family (Ha, Mike,
maybe that's pushing it *a little*). Anyway,
those of you on #ytsejam have heard my
    speil, but....

Gamma Ray - Land of the Free

I had been holding out on ordering this
due to the fact Ralf Scheepers (who?) had
been given the boot. I love his vocals, and
Kai Hansen (who?) had not impressed me
on his Helloween material or the spot
Gamma Ray tune. Well, I should have forked
out the green a little earlier. This album, as a rule,
smokes. It has has the characteristic "German
Power Metal" trappings; power riffs, melodic melodies,
and minstrel-ish vocal arragements. For the most
part the record is more consistant than some of their
previous work, and Kai's vocals are fairly strong
in studio. As for live, well, see the next review!

    Gamma Ray - Alive 95

This two cd set is one of my favorites of the year.
The first disc, around 70 minutes, is heavy on material
from the Land of the Free, and that's just as well, because
when Kai attempts to sing Ralf's material...eh...no. While
Kai can screech with conviction he is no Ralf Scheepers.
Disc two kicked my ass. Ralf Scheepers sings on this!!!
He absolutely rages. While this cd is only 30 minutes, it
was worth the 20 bucks all by itself. The other disc is just
    gravy. The man can sing.

    Stratovarius - Episode

Finnish group which sounds like Yngwie, if Yngwie could
write a song. Very good record, and very much worth the
cash because it times in at 74 minutes and it has very strong
material to boot. I have heard Jens Johansson plays on this,
and if it's true, I believe it. Dueling leads a la "Marching Out"
era Yngwie. You still here, Jens?

Anthrax - Nothing - Australasian Tour EP

This has Nothing, Re-mix of Fueled (not bad), covers
of Iron Maiden's "Remember Tomorrow" and the Police's
"No Time This Time," plus one other tune that presumably
didn't make the cut on Stomp 442. Not worth the 16 dollar
import price, but the tunes are strong, and if you love Maiden,
    Anthrax does them proud.

    Nevermore - In Memorium

Five song ep which whets the appitite for the new one due
this fall "The Politics of Ecstasy" (I think) and it does
enough with Loomis' guitar work and Dane's vocals to
count the days. This man can out and out sing. If you
ever see Sanctuary's cds "Into the Mirror Black" or
"Refuge Denied" - get them. FYI, Nevermore was born
from the ashes of Sanctuary, with Warrel Dane and the
bass player (ha, it's nice to be remembered.) going on.

Well, that's enough for now. Any questions, give me an e-mail.

I think at least Mr. Mike Portnoy would really like to perform on Letterman's show, 'cause when he guest-hosted (is that a word?) the European Headbanger's Ball early last year he presented his very own Top Ten List: "The Top Ten Reasons Why You Should Buy AWAKE" ! Unfortunately I didn't tape it... Personally though, I would like DT much more to appear on Conan's show, because here in Germany Letterman was taken off the air a few months ago (no censorship, just bad ratings)... ;-) Anyway, as some other jammers have already pointed out, I don't think it would make much sense to send emails to either one of those shows AT THE MOMENT. Let's wait for the new album and see what we can do then.

This was my very first post to the Jam. I just hope somebody can read this now and it didn't turn into roadkill on the data-highway.

    Hey all,

Just got back from the local music outlet. Every time I am there I am reminded how much they have!! The place is called Vintage Vinyl, in Fords NJ (near Woodbridge). My primary objective was The Working Man tribute, and I was not disapointed; it was in the RUSH section, $14. I also checked out the DT section. Bought a copy of LATM, $25. I also noted an Import version of Awake (Oriental writing on side) for $32. I noticed somewhere on the list the question was asked why anyone should want to get this if they already have Awake, I was wondering the same thing...

(I also picked up 2 KMFDM CD single/remixes: Brute & Glory, but I doubt many of you would be interested in that, but...)

Now, I will not go into any long drawn out review of Working Man as it has been done enough by others. I just want to say that it is really good. It's interesting though, I think that this CD will only enhance my appreciation for the real thing. Nothing against the tribute, but it ain't RUSH!! I have become so familiar with these tunes that any tiny note, accent, time change, or solo that is different stands out. It's not a BAD thing, I think that in and of itself, it's great; but if I have a choice of which version of Strangiato or YYZ I am going to listen to, I will probably opt for RUSH's version (OK, Bad example, the Tribute versions are probably the best tunes on the album, IMO). Oh yeah, doesn't Mark Slaughter sound amazingly like (old style)Geddy on Anthem (maybe THAT is one reason for their Ire, they were worried that someone else would show them up; NOT SO!!!)

Anyway, one last inquiry here, and then I'm off...

Has anyone heard of a band called SKY; my brother caught them on the New Jersey Network the other night and was floored by them. I saw they had quite a few CD's in the Prog section of the above mentioned store, but I wanted ot find out more before I advised my brother about them, anyone know anything ( I KNOW this is the right place to ask)

The >crowd may not be a crowd that can accept a "Dream Theater" type of band. >The band itsself may not want this. Do they want to be in the spotlight >like that and be in front of 10 million people? It's quite a lot for us >to be saying to them "Yeah!@!# Go up and play!@" but it's a lot different >when _YOU_ have to be the one doing it.

Keep in mind that not everyone is fanatical as us. The vast majority of people don't watch Letterman for whatever band's on that night. Nor do they never watch Letterman again if the band sucks. A bad band won't bring down Letterman's ratings.

    >He had them on how many times? Were they supporting "Youthanasia?" Were >they on tour? Did they have a catchy little single to play? Is >Megadeath well known? Is Dream Theater well known? > > I think you're beginning to see my point, here.

And I'm also beginning to see that between you and Kurt, you took up half a jam with quotes.

    But that's........okay. :)
