Chasing Time is just a compilation album, with a lot of John Arch-singing
stuff. You should check out "Parallels" and "Perfect Symmetry" and "No
    Exit." Much better stuff.

Ah yes. These are definitely the ones I want to be remembered
for. You can do many things to leave your mark on this world, but
masturbatory activities and crunchy simians are at the pinnacle of
    human achievement. ;)

keyboard and madly log into IRC. :)

I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for your
compassion and support during what has been and will continue to be a
    difficult time.
It's very hard for me to watch someone I love endure pain on a
daily basis and not be able to assist, other than by providing comfort
    through my presence.
Your kind thoughts mean more to Sue and I than we can
articulate. They are a source of strength to me and have moved her
    greatly.
We are both fighters and will get through this. You can rest
assured that your love is a wonderful asset in Sue's treatment.
My, and our, sincere and most heartfelt thanks to you all.

    Love,

    Rick and Sue

To people who tried to contact me about the tapeswap and failed:

I was playing games on my system (reich.uark.edu) a couple days ago, so if
your mail bounced, that is probably the reason. It shouldn't do that
unless I have the system down for hideous amounts of time, but who
knows... so, just resend the messages, the address is correct:

    tapeswap@reich.uark.edu

Also, anyone else needing to sign up, please do so... I'm going to start
this thing in about the next week, as time permits.

    *************************************************************************

    A few ramblings now:

Got Working Man (finally)... Devin's voice is actually pretty cool, I
thought. Mark Slaughter sounds terrible though, IMO... and I even used
to like Slaughter (first concert I ever saw, pretty bad, huh?). Overall,
a damned fine album... one comment though, I find myself liking the songs
I am *not* already familiar with better than the ones I do know.

James' voice: I'm one of the guys who will occasionally critique James'
voice... I _don't_ think there is anyone else qualified to fill his spot,
and I think he brings a lot to the band. Truth is though, James' voice is
not always on target during live performances. He has a great tone, good
delivery, etc... but, he is not as consistent in live situations as
someone like Geoff Tate. Could I do what James does? Heck no, nor do I
pretend to be able to... I just don't think you should hold James' as
the one and only infallible vocalist in the world. Give him his due
respect, but realize there are other great vocalists out there too.

I've got a few comments including the one the subject is on:

First, while in undergrad school in 1994 (fall), I was tutoring some
people and discovered this one guy was a huge RUSH fan and that Neil Peart
was considered by him the absolute best drummer. Now, no shot against Neil,
but I think Portnoy now has outclassed him, also with the help of age...
Anyhow, I told this guy about DT, and how Portnoy can actually outdrum
Neil. Of course, his initial reaction was "no way - are you crazy or
something?" So, I played for him 6:00 on the car stereo for starters,
and the rest is history. I played various other tunes from Awake, which
as far as I know, he liked more than IAW. I could tell that he was blown
away by the drumming on awake, and he went out and bought it right away,
as well as IAW. So, if anybody knows of any drummers who actually do not
know of DT yet (hard to believe I know), just play 6:00 and they'll be
    completely impressed!

Now as for other instruments, I don't have as valid an opinion being a
    drummer myself, but here goes:

I think Learning to Live can impress ANYBODY for ANY instrument (one of
my personal favorite songs). There are some great keys parts, the vocals
are FANTASTIC, so is the drumming. Bass and guitars have so much variety
that just all the different styles played in that song would be impressive!

Also, keys on 6:00 are excellent as well as in scarred. The mirror would
impress most heavy guitar players, but voices prob. has the best solo.
Oh - also under a glass moon! my goodness! Excellent guitar and keys
solos! Of course, bass is prob. best in Metropolis (I don't think anyone
can disagree with this, since that awesome solo sits in the middle).

Vocals are greatest on all of IAW (I've never liked them as much on Awake
    for some reason) and ACOS.

Drumming is best on all of Awake (best SOUNDING drums as well).
    -----------
As for other matters, regarding Rick (I think) with his wife's injury - I
think it's great the sympathy and true compassion that jammers have been
showing for him and his wife, and here's my part - GET WELL SOON and best
wishes for a speedy recovery for her! It truly shows us the depth and
substance behind all of us, not that we ONLY care about listening to
incredible music. We actually LIVE up to Dream Theater's songs and
lyrics, not because we have been manipulated by their messages, but
because we as people, have already identified ourselves in their
messages, and that's one of the reasons why we love the band so much! WE
CAN ACTUALLY IDENTIFY ASPECTS OF OUR LIVES IN SONG. Again, a truly
commendable trait of the jammers: our compassion and caring for others,
as well as enthusiasm for life in general!!

    Hope this wasn't too long,

    Jon Case

Cash is tight for everyone and I'm far too proud to take money from
anyone. Please understand, I do appreciate the gesture but I just
    can't take your money.
Besides, it looks like this whole thing might work out after

I had to laugh when I read the very last line of this. Guess who was
posting the stuff to FidoNet? <g> There's quite a few Dream
Theater/Queensryche/prog metal fans there, so I thought it was worth
getting more people in on the cause. Anyhow, when I read that line, I
had to see who was writing the message, and, lo and behold, it was one I
    recognized!

It would have been nice had O:R had some positive response, but I'm
afraid that if it didn't work before, it won't work again, either. :(
Once in a while, I'll be channel flipping and happen to catch a clever
video, but, for the most part, the videos seem to cater to people with
the attention span of a gnat...definitely not an audience open to the
complexity of Dream Theater, let alone any other hardcore prog bands. In
fact, when DT does get played (i.e. "Lie"), it's a disappointment to me
to see the song get hacked up.

    Also from #1811:

    > Is the Dalbello mentioned on the last digest the same Dalbello
    >that wrote Queensryche's "Gonna Get Close to You" and sang "Start Today"
    >on the Victor album (Alex Lifeson's side project)?

Jinx! <g> Or, rather, GMTA. :) I had no idea that someone else had
asked this before me since I posted my own query before this digest was
sent out. I got the EOJ, though. ;)

DTC! last nite on #ytsejam, ryan called up his local radio station and

on the 2CD thing: i'd like a double, but a single disc would be more successful.

when trying to read 'ytsejam', but it was nice to finally have someone
say they've even heard of Dream Theater much less want to subscribe
to the jam...I think this about covers it for now...

Ya know, several years ago Marillion was my fave band. IMHO their best
stuff was with Fish on vocals. Fish is a poet and a genius. My favorites
are Clutching At Straws and Misplaced Childhood, both of which are
"concept albums" meaning most of the tunes run together and tell quite a
story as only Marillion can. Fugazi is great also but the production is
sub-par (very bright and edgy in places) but musically powerful. Script
is depressing and featured a different drummer. Buy it last. Can't
comment on the post Fish stuff except for Seasons End which I don't like
much. None of their stuff is heavy tho so be prepared for something
different...but awesome....E-Mail me if ya wanna know more...

Query....Is the Superior disc worth like $27!!!!! Can't find it any
cheaper...guess I can drive for Dominos part time....

    Yee zee 'jamanoids!

I received a message from Alta Mira concerning the JP Tribute "Legends of
Metal" vol.2 and here's what it said:

    Judas Priest Tribute Vol 2
    --------------------------
    Features:
     Gamma Ray Stratovarius Kreator
     Angra Overkill Skyclad
Virgin Steele Blind Guardian Iced Earth
     Forbidden Heavens Gate Nevermore
     Leviathan

..I'm not complaining, there's some of my fave bands in there, but just what
the hell happened to JLB, who was supposed to sing on this disc? And Gamma Ray
was already on disc 1 of this!

Wow! There is actually a DT related thread.

I know for a fact that DT played IF at the Pittsburgh show in November
1994. I have this show on tape (although shoddy quality). I was pissed
though since 2 days later at the Baltimore show they did not play IF!

On a side topic, I still have found nothing wrong with the way Devin
sounds on the Working Man cd. Sure he does not sound like Geddy but I
like his voice. Why does everyone hate him? Is it his voice or that he
    sounds nothing like Geddy?
